Giovanni da Verrazzano (Italian pronunciation:[dʒoˈvanni da verratˈtsaːno]; sometimes also wrongly spelled Verrazano) (1485–1528) was an Italianexplorer of North America, in the service of King Francis I of France.
The consensus among scholars is that Giovanni da Verrazzano was born in Val di Greve, south of Florence, then capital and main city of the Republic of Florence, the son of Piero Andrea di Bernardo da Verrazzano and Fiammetta Cappelli. It is generally claimed he was born in the Castello di Verrazzano, hence its birth indicator (similar to Leonardo da Vinci). Some alternative theories have been elaborated: e.g., a certain French scholarship assumes that Verrazzano was born in Lyon, France, the son of Alessandro di Bartolommeo da Verrazano and Giovanna Guadagni. Whatever the case, Verrazzano always considered himself to be Florentine and was considered a Florentine by his contemporaries as well. He signed documents employing a Latin version of his name, “Janus Verrazanus,” and in his will dated 11 May 1526 in Rouen, France (preserved at the Archives départementales de la Seine-Maritime), he called himself “Jehan de Verrazane.”

John de Verrazzano and the First Interactions with Natives of the Eastern United States
Verrazzano was an Italian explorer, who in 1524, set sail on behalf of France to try and find a seaway to the Far East. He was set to look in between Florida and Newfoundland for a route. While Verrazzano was the first documented European to set eyes on Manhattan, his interactions with the natives of the coastline are quite fascinating. Nearly a full century before the first Thanksgiving, Verrazzano gives us a glimpse into a world absent of colonization.

European explorers had visited Maine several times already, including Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524 and EstevanGomez in 1525, but none had attempted to create a settlement ... Had it lasted, St ... That settlement would have been French — not British ... St.
