Giordano Bruno and the Poetry of the Cosmos, with Valentina Zaffino
A Summer Webinar Series lecture by Professor Valentina Zaffino (Pontifical Lateran University; Rome Global Gateway, University of Notre Dame), presented by the Lumen Christi Institute and the American Cusanus Society.
Giordano Bruno (1548-1600) was an Italian Dominican friar, philosopher, mathematician, and cosmologist. Bruno’s notoriety is due both to his adventurous life and to his original reinterpretation of ancient thought in light of the new philosophical scenario. Professor Valentina Zaffino will analyze Bruno’s image of the cosmos, focusing on his remodeled Neoplatonic background. In this context, as will be shown, the notions of harmony and beauty are closely related with Bruno’s fascinating claim of the infinity of the cosmos.

The Art of Memory: Frances Yates, Giordano Bruno And The Mnemonic Tradition
The Art of Memory by Frances Yates is an incredible study of the memory techniques used by figures through history.
From Giordano Bruno and Marsilio Ficino to John Dee, Ramon Llull, Martin Faulks and Nelson Dellis, The Art of Memory has been an incredible resource for thousands of people around the world.
The only problem is... Yates is considered by many scholars to have been incorrect about so many of her ideas. She seems to have deeply misunderstood Bruno when it comes to hermeticism and that suggests she might be misguided by how he and others used the Memory Palace technique.
What was Frances Yates misguided on?

What was Frances Yates misguided on?
Not only how the great memory masters used their Roman Rooms and the Journey Method, but they used these ancient mnemotechnics to achieve encyclopedic memory to establish a theory of everything.
Bruno's creativity was immense, and his ability to help others develop principles of self education and personal transformation is profound. But it matters a great deal that we understand the true implications of what Bruno was really saying, especially in an era when neuroscience tells us so much about the human brain.
The recent memory championship tradition is fantastic, but it has left so much of the rich philosophy inherent to the mnemonics behind. This playlist series intends to help restore the psychology and hermetic thinking behind memory "magic" to bring back the best of renaissance science as we use the internet as our common school of advanced study to helps us learn faster and remember more.
Frances Yates was lucky to have found the Warburg Institute and we're lucky Aby Warburg created it. So many important texts were preserved and Frances Yates helps us explore their many ideas.
Future videos will explore the role of Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica in memory training.
We'll look into the Rhetorica Ad Herrenium and the Picatrix. In this series, I want to leave no stone unturned. Here's the link to the playlist for checking back as new videos are added:

In Chapter 4 of Unbelievable, historian of science Michael Keas explodes the myth that Giordano Bruno was a martyr for science, as science popularizers such as Neil deGrasse Tyson make him out to be. Bruno was indeed burned at the stake in 1600 for disagreeing with the Roman Catholic Church — which Keas heartily agrees was a bad move on the Church’s part.
But Bruno was not executed for his view that we live in a vast universe with vast numbers of planets. Rather, he was burned for his religious view that an infinite God had to make the universe that way — and that everyone’s soul “transmigrates” to other planets after death, rather than meeting a final judgment. Tune into learn more from Keas about this and other details about the Bruno myth, and the true history it obscures.
Michael Keas, a scholar who holds a PhD in the history of science, demolishes myths that have been around for centuries and are widely accepted today. He provides much-needed intellectual ammunition for religious believers tired of being portrayed as anti-science.

Readers of myth-busting books like Galileo Goes to Jail and Newton’s Apple will love Unbelievable, as will readers of books by other Discovery Institute fellows, such as Stephen Meyer’s Signature in the Cell and Darwin’s Doubt, Douglas Axe’s Undeniable, and William Dembski’s Uncommon Dissent.

Giordano Bruno devices over 30 different kinds of Memory Palace. Ars Combinatoria is just one, and it is very powerful.
Sometimes called The Combinator, this memory wheel is a mixture Memory Palace of his "seals" called The Field and The Tree.

Let me know in the comments if you give this "Decision Memory Palace" a try. Obviously, you will want to meet the "requirements" Giordano Bruno has in mind before the real results start kicking in, but I believe using these techniques can itself help get you there.
Who was Giordano Bruno and what is a Memory Palace?
Although you may have heard that he is a hermetic wizard and whatnot from Frances Yates, it is not clear that this was the case. I throw some nuance on the topic in this analysis of her book, The Art of Memory:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3GGcO5Cx3I
My thesis is that Bruno was simply a very good master of the Memory Palace technique and quite likely someone who experienced what we sometimes call "enlightenment."
If this is the case, the feelings he described as being achievable by anyone likely arrived because he trained his procedural memory through extensive memory practice and use of the method of loci.
He also used his memory to work on topics like math, physics and philosophy and seems to have started quite young. He lived from 1548 to 1600 when he was burned at the stake.
This is a sad outcome, but fortunately many of his memory improvement books survived. We are very blessed to have them and I look forward to diving deeper into more of them in future videos.

Giordano Bruno Crater - The Moon
Giordano Bruno is one of the youngest large craters on the Moon (21 kilometers in diameter, 35.97°N, 102.89°E). LROC captured this fantastic oblique view of the crater from an altitude of 113 kilometers in August of 2017. The Sun was fairly high above the horizon (31°) so only the steepest slopes and boulders in the foreground cast shadows and albedo (surface brightness) contrasts are prominent.
Faster than a speeding bullet - or rather ten times faster than a speeding bullet - is a good starting point in terms of grasping the energy released in a typical impact event. That is, for a bullet approaching 2 kilometers in diameter! The pressure and heat that were released during the collision not only excavated a hole much larger than the impactor but also melted a tremendous amount the targe...

Faster than a speeding bullet - or rather ten times faster than a speeding bullet - is a good starting point in terms of grasping the energy released in a typical impact event. That is, for a bullet approaching 2 kilometers in diameter! The pressure and heat that were released during the collision not only excavated a hole much larger than the impactor but also melted a tremendous amount the target rock. Melt was sprayed and sloshed on the forming crater walls where much of it flowed back, seeking the lowest point in the impact crater. From the LROC vantage point you can follow the path taken by impact melt as it flowed across the irregular floor, ponding in closed depressions, and some of it ultimately reaching the lowest point.
