Telephone numbering plan
A telephone numbering plan is a type of numbering scheme used in telecommunication to assign telephone numbers to subscriber telephones or other telephony endpoints. Telephone numbers are the addresses of participants in a telephone network, reachable by a system of destination code routing. Telephone numbering plans are defined in each of administrative regions of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and they are also present in private telephone networks.
Numbering plans may follow a variety of design strategies which have often arisen from the historical evolution of individual telephone networks and local requirements. A broad division is commonly recognized, distinguishing open numbering plans and closed numbering plans. A closed numbering plan imposes a fixed number of digits to every telephone number, while an open numbering plan allows variance in the numbers of digits. Many numbering plans subdivide their territory of service into geographic regions designated by an area code, which is a fixed-length or variable-length set of digits forming the most-significant part of the dialing sequence to reach a telephone subscriber.

Telephone numbers with the prefix 555 are widely used for fictitious telephone numbers in North American television shows, films, video games, and other media.
Not all numbers that begin with 555 are fictional—for example, 555-1212 is one of the standard numbers for directory assistance throughout the United States and Canada. In fact, only 555-0100 through 555-0199 are now specifically reserved for fictional use; the other numbers have been reserved for actual assignment, with the notable exception of the 800 area code where only 800-555-0199 is reserved. The entire 555 exchange is reserved in all overlay North American toll-free area codes (844, 855, 866, 877, 888) and in Canada's rarely used non-geographic area code 600.
Area code 555 in the North American Numbering Plan is reserved for Directory Assistance applications.
Fictional usage
Telephone companies began encouraging the producers of television shows and movies to use the 555 prefix for fictional telephone numbers by the 1960s. Two early examples include The Second Time Around (1961), which used 555-3485, and Panic in Year Zero! (1962), which used 555-2106. "Rossmore 555", mentioned in Eyes in the Night (1942), may be considered a precursor. In television shows made or set in the mid-1960s or earlier, "KLondike 5" or "KLamath 5" reflects the old convention for telephone exchange names.

Telephone number
A telephone number is a sequence of digits assigned to a fixed-line telephone subscriber station connected to a telephone line or to a wireless electronic telephony device, such as a radio telephone or a mobile telephone, or to other devices for data transmission via the public switched telephone network (PSTN) or other private networks. Most telephone numbers are assigned to one telephone line or one mobile telephone, and most lines or mobiles have one number.
A telephone number serves as an address for switching telephone calls using a system of destination routing. Telephone numbers are entered or dialed by a calling party on the originating telephone set, which transmits the sequence of digits in the process of signaling to a telephone exchange. The exchange completes the call either to another locally connected subscriber or via the PSTN to the called party.
The use of telephone numbers instead of subscriber names to indicate to the telephone operator what destination line a caller wished to be connected to was developed and first used in the autumn of 1879 in Lowell, Massachusetts during a measles epidemic. Moses Greeley Parker, a local doctor, realized that if all four of the city's operators were incapacitated by the epidemic, their replacements would have great trouble quickly learning which of the switchboard's 200 jacks were assigned to which subscribers. He recommended the use of numbers instead. "The local Bell company management at first protested that its customers would consider their designation by numbers to be beneath their dignity; nevertheless, it saw the logic of the doctor's suggestion and followed it. The subscribers were not outraged; the epidemic quickly passed, but telephone numbers did not."

Gilbert Burns (fighter)
Gilbert Burns (born July 20, 1986), is a Brazilian mixed martial artist and a three-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion. He is the older brother of One FC Featherweight contender Herbert Burns.
Jiu-Jitsu career
When Burns was young, his father offered to fix his customer's car in trade for three months of jiu-jitsu lessons for all of his boys. Burns started training at the Academia Associacao Oriente, an affiliate of Nova Uniao led by Welton Ribeiro. He trained with Nova Uniao until the 2007 World Championship, where he came in second place.
In 2009, Burns became recognized when he won the silver medal at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship.
In 2010, Burns attained a high level of international success competing worldwide. He reached the semifinals of the European Open in January; he defeated heavy favourite Celso Venicius at the World Pro Cup trials; he won the World Cup finals in Abu Dhabi against Claudio Mattos; and he won the Brazilian Nationals in May.
In 2011, Burns achieved his highest recognition as he won the gold medal in the 2011 World Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships.

Gilbert Burns (farmer)
Gilbert Burns (1760 – 1827), the younger brother of Robert Burns the poet, was born at Alloway. He married Jean Breckenridge in 1791, had 6 sons and 5 daughters, died in 1827 aged 66 and was buried at Bolton, East Lothian, Scotland. Gilbert's writings have contributed greatly to the bank of knowledge that exists regarding the life of his famous brother.
Life and character
Gilbert's elder brother was Robert Burns the poet, born on 25 January 1759, Gilbert following in 1760, Agnes in 1762, Annabella in 1764, William in 1767, John in 1769 and finally Isabella in 1771. Gilbert's parents were William Burnes and Agnes Broun. Gilbert was also the name of his grandfather on his mother's side.
In 1766 the family moved from Alloway near Ayr to their first rented farm, Mount Oliphant. Life at Mount Oliphant was very hard for Gilbert and he describes in his letters how extreme hard work was the only way that his family could survive and that their diet and life was one of austerity with butcher's meat non existent.

Trunk Lines
Every Trunk Line has a telephone number
A Trunk Line allows for 1 incoming or outgoing call. You can have far more telephones in a building then you have trunk lines.
Incoming Trunk lines are setup in Hunt Groups. If the main phone number is busy the call is automatically forwarded to the next number in the Hunt Group
Incoming Hunt Groups are setup by your local telephone company.
Outgoing calls can be routed to use selected trunk lines. This in configured in your PBX.
PBX and Voicemail
The PBX routes telephone calls
The Voicemail system provides all audio messaging. (Voicemail boxes, Message Boards, and Auto Attendant Messages)
Stations
All devices that connect to the PBX are "Stations". This includes telephones, call boxes, intercom systems, etc.
There are 2 types of stations; Analogue and Digital.
Analogue and Digital stations have to be connected to appropriate ports on the PBX. An analogue phone cannot connect to a digital port and vice versa.
Almost all fax machines and phones you buy at retail stores are analogue. If your new fax machine does not work it may be because it's plugged into a digital line.
Subscribers
Subscribers are users of the Voicemail system.
Subscribers do not have to have stations
Voicemail ports are the number of connections to the Voicemail system at any one time. This includes not just people retrieving their voicemail, but also incoming calls that connect to Auto Attendant messages.
Final Thoughts
Be careful before you touch! Most older telephone and voicemail systems were administered using a phone keypad, NOT and computer interface. If you mess something up it can be very difficult to rebuild a deleted Auto Attendant or such.

Telephone Switchboard! My 5+20 PMBX
This is my battered old GPO 5+20 PMBX manual switchboard. This example was issued by Post Office Telephones in the UK in the mid 1960s, right in the middle of the Strowger era! It's entirely manual, and requires an operator to put calls through. It's called a 5+20 because it can support up to 5 incoming exchange lines, and 20 telephones. Here I just show you the basics of how to put through an incoming external call. You can also make internal only calls, internal to external calls, night service, hold, cord testing and other facilities.

When TV shows and movies need to use a phone number as part of the story, they typically use one that starts with the numbers "555." We spoke with an official historian at AT&T to find out why these 3 numbers in particular were chosen. It turns out that the answer has a lot to do with the way telephone numbers evolved over time. Following is a transcript of the video.

Narrator: Did you ever wonder why phone numbers in TV shows and movies always start with the numbers 555?
555-1125.
It's 555-3455.
555-2401.
Narrator: The short answer is that most 555 numbers are not working numbers, so real people won't be harassed if die-hard fans try to call them. - 55 was an exchange combination that was not used very often in the American telephone system.
You may get a wrong number or no number at all.
Narrator: An FCC contractor called the NANPA, or North American Numbering Plan Administration, is tasked with assigning numbers for use. 555-1212 is still used for Directory Assistance and 555-4334 is reserved for Assigned National use. But a set of one hundred 555 numbers have been officially designated for use in Hollywood, 555-0100 through 555-0199.

Narrator: Back in the early 90s, 555 numbers outside that range could be reserved for information service providers, but this program was shut down by the NANPA in 2015. While those other numbers might one day be put back in circulation, the 100 reserved for TV and movies will not, so they will always be safe for use. So, how specifically did 555 become the famous number that it is today?
Decades ago, phone numbers used to look a lot different. They consisted of a word and a five-digit numerical code. The word was a telephone exchange name and the number was assigned to a specific phone in that area.
Sheldon Hochheiser: Up until 1919, all telephone calls were manual. You had to start by speaking to an operator.
This is WY 5-2240.
Narrator: References to this system can be seen in the names of movies, like BUtterfield 8. And songs like the Glenn Miller Orchestra's, PEnnsylvania 6-5000, which calls hotel Pennsylvania in New York.
Hochheiser: These were based on names that could be easily understood verbally. - Narrator: Eventually, phone companies switched to a system where customers had to dial themselves.
We are changing your telephone service over to dial. Take up your receiver and always listen for the dial tone.
Narrator: Phone numbers were reached using numbers corresponding to the first two letters of the exchange name. So, if you wanted to call Pennsylvania 6-5000, you would dial 73-6-5000. Since seven corresponds with PQRS on the keypad, and three corresponds to DEF. For Butterfield, you would start with 28. So, with this in mind, let's take another look at 555.
Hochheiser: Now, some combinations for the first two letters of a word worked better than others. One of the combinations that were very difficult to correlate to useful exchange names was 55.
Narrator: On the keypad, five has the letters JKL. Letters, which when placed next to each other, don't make many words or exchange names. So, there were not many real phone numbers starting with 55.
Hochheiser: Klondike, which has become well-known, is about the only one.
Klondike 4-2106, Los Angeles please.
Then call Klondike 5-3226.
Narrator: These numbers were often shortened to just the first two letters plus the five digit code. Since Klondike five was not frequently assigned, it found other uses. Bell systems noted in an official guide that the 55X exchange was reserved for radiotelephone.

Telephone systems are not complicated if you understand how they work.
A Word on VoIP
VoIP is not a telephone system
PSTN
PSTN -- Public Switched Telephone Network is like the Internet, but for telephone communication
NADP -- North American Dialing Plan -- Is the system for routing telephone calls.
Central Office -- All telephone lines connect to a local central office
Trunk Lines
Every Trunk Line has a telephone number
A Trunk Line allows for 1 incoming or outgoing call. You can have far more telephones in a building then you have trunk lines.
Incoming Trunk lines are setup in Hunt Groups. If the main phone number is busy the call is automatically forwarded to the next number in the Hunt Group
Incoming Hunt Groups are setup by your local telephone company.
Outgoing calls can be routed to use selected trunk lines. This in configured in your PBX.
PBX and Voicemail
The PBX routes telephone calls
The Voicemail system provides all audio messaging. (Voicemail boxes, Message Boards, and Auto Attendant Messages)
Stations
All devices that connect to the PBX are "Stations". This includes telephones, call boxes, intercom systems, etc.
There are 2 types of stations; Analogue and Digital.
Analogue and Digital stations have to be connected to appropriate ports on the PBX. An analogue phone cannot connect to a digital port and vice versa.
Almost all fax machines and phones you buy at retail stores are analogue. If your new fax machine does not work it may be because it's plugged into a digital line.
Subscribers
Subscribers are users of the Voicemail system.
Subscribers do not have to have stations
Voicemail ports are the number of connections to the Voicemail system at any one time. This includes not just people retrieving their voicemail, but also incoming calls that connect to Auto Attendant messages.
Final Thoughts
Be careful before you touch! Most older telephone and voicemail systems were administered using a phone keypad, NOT and computer interface. If you mess something up it can be very difficult to rebuild a deleted Auto Attendant or such.

A telephone numbering plan is a type of numbering scheme used in telecommunication to assign telephone numbers to subscriber telephones or other telephony endpoints. Telephone numbers are the addresses of participants in a telephone network, reachable by a system of destination code routing. Telephone numbering plans are defined in each of administrative regions of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and they are also present in private telephone networks. For public number systems, geographic location plays a role in the sequence of numbers assigned to each telephone subscriber.
Numbering plans may follow a variety of design strategies which have often arisen from the historical evolution of individual telephone networks and local requirements. A broad division is commonly recognized, distinguishing open numbering plans and closed numbering plans. Many numbering plans subdivide their territory of service into geographic regions designated by a prefix, often called an area code or city code, which is a set of digits forming the most-significant part of the dialing sequence to reach a telephone subscriber.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has established a comprehensive numbering plan, designated E.164, for uniform interoperability of the networks of its member state or regional administrations. It is an open numbering plan, however, imposing a maximum length of 15 digits to telephone numbers. The standard defines a country calling code (country code) for each state or region which is prefixed to each national numbering plan telephone number for international destination routing.
Private numbering plans exist in telephone networks that are privately operated in an enterprise or organizational campus. Such systems may be supported by a private branch exchange (PBX), which provides a central access point to the PSTN and also controls internal calls between between telephone extensions.
In contrast to numbering plans, which determine telephone numbers assigned to subscriber stations, dialing plans establish the customer dialing procedures, i.e. the sequence of digits required to reach a destination. Even in closed numbering plans, it is not always necessary to dial all digits of a number. For example, an area code may often be omitted when the destination is in the same area as the calling station.

When TV shows and movies need to use a phone number as part of the story, they typically use one that starts with the numbers "555." We spoke with an official historian at AT&T to find out why these 3 numbers in particular were chosen. It turns out that the answer has a lot to do with the way telephone numbers evolved over time. Following is a transcript of the video.

Narrator: Did you ever wonder why phone numbers in TV shows and movies always start with the numbers 555?
555-1125.
It's 555-3455.
555-2401.
Narrator: The short answer is that most 555 numbers are not working numbers, so real people won't be harassed if die-hard fans try to call them. - 55 was an exchange combination that was not used very often in the American telephone system.
You may get a wrong number or no number at all.
Narrator: An FCC contractor called the NANPA, or North American Numbering Plan Administration, is tasked with assigning numbers for use. 555-1212 is still used for Directory Assistance and 555-4334 is reserved for Assigned National use. But a set of one hundred 555 numbers have been officially designated for use in Hollywood, 555-0100 through 555-0199.

Narrator: Back in the early 90s, 555 numbers outside that range could be reserved for information service providers, but this program was shut down by the NANPA in 2015. While those other numbers might one day be put back in circulation, the 100 reserved for TV and movies will not, so they will always be safe for use. So, how specifically did 555 become the famous number that it is today?
Decades ago, phone numbers used to look a lot different. They consisted of a word and a five-digit numerical code. The word was a telephone exchange name and the number was assigned to a specific phone in that area.
Sheldon Hochheiser: Up until 1919, all telephone calls were manual. You had to start by speaking to an operator.
This is WY 5-2240.
Narrator: References to this system can be seen in the names of movies, like BUtterfield 8. And songs like the Glenn Miller Orchestra's, PEnnsylvania 6-5000, which calls hotel Pennsylvania in New York.
Hochheiser: These were based on names that could be easily understood verbally. - Narrator: Eventually, phone companies switched to a system where customers had to dial themselves.
We are changing your telephone service over to dial. Take up your receiver and always listen for the dial tone.
Narrator: Phone numbers were reached using numbers corresponding to the first two letters of the exchange name. So, if you wanted to call Pennsylvania 6-5000, you would dial 73-6-5000. Since seven corresponds with PQRS on the keypad, and three corresponds to DEF. For Butterfield, you would start with 28. So, with this in mind, let's take another look at 555.
Hochheiser: Now, some combinations for the first two letters of a word worked better than others. One of the combinations that were very difficult to correlate to useful exchange names was 55.
Narrator: On the keypad, five has the letters JKL. Letters, which when placed next to each other, don't make many words or exchange names. So, there were not many real phone numbers starting with 55.
Hochheiser: Klondike, which has become well-known, is about the only one.
Klondike 4-2106, Los Angeles please.
Then call Klondike 5-3226.

Ranges for fictitious telephone numbers are common in most telephone numbering plans. One of the main reasons these ranges exist is to avoid accidentally using real phone numbers in movies and television programs because of viewers frequently calling the numbers used. In North America, the area served by the North American Numbering Plan (NANPA) system of area codes, fictitious telephone numbers are usually of the form (XXX) 555-xxxx. The use of 555 numbers in fiction, however, led a desire to assign some of them in the real world, and some of them are no longer suitable for use in fiction. Other areas have different fictitious telephone numbers.
To be effective, it must not be possible to change a fictitious telephone number into a real one by adding or changing a few digits. Usually, the number must be unassigned in every area code within the numbering plan. Outside NANPA, special fictitious telephone numbers for mobile phones, premium-rate numbers or toll free numbers are sometimes assigned as well.

This is my battered old GPO 5+20 PMBX manual switchboard. This example was issued by Post Office Telephones in the UK in the mid 1960s, right in the middle of the Strowger era!
It's entirely manual, and requires an operator to put calls through. It's called a 5+20 because it can support up to 5 incoming exchange lines, and 20 telephones.
Here I just show you the basics of how to put through an incoming external call. You can also make internal only calls, internal to external calls, night service, hold, cord testing and other facilities.
