#unitedkingdom #countryinformation #firstworldpeoples The United Kingdom, made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, is an island nation in northwestern Europe.
England – birthplace of Shakespeare and The Beatles – is home to the capital, London, a globally influential centre of finance and culture.England is also site of Neolithic Stonehenge, Bath’s Roman spa and centuries-old universities at Oxford and Cambridge.
The United Kingdom has historically played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith in the 19th century, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two world wars and the Irish Republic's withdrawal from the union. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation.
As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council and a founding member of NATO and the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1998. The latter was
suspended from October 2002 until May 2007 due to wrangling over the peace process.
The UK has been an active member of the EU since its accession in 1973, although it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union. However, motivated in part by frustration at a remote bureaucracy in Brussels and massive migration into the country, UK citizens on 23 June 2016 narrowly voted to leave the EU. The so-called “Brexit” (British exit) will take at least two years to carry out but could help trigger referenda in other EU countries where skepticism of EU membership benefits is strong.

Disambiguation or Entity Linking is the assignment of a knowledge base identifier (Wikidata, Wikipedia) to a named entity. Our goal was to improve an MVP model by adding newly created knowledge while maintaining competitive F1 scores.
Taking an entity linking model from MVP into production in a spaCy-native pipeline architecture posed several data science and engineering challenges, such as hyperparameter estimation and knowledge enhancement, which we addressed by taking advantage of the engineering tools Docker and Kubernetes to semi-automate training as an on-demand job.
We also discuss some of our learnings and process improvements that were needed to strike a balance between data science goals and engineering constraints and present our current work on improving performance through BERT-embedding based contextual similarity.

Why was Ireland Colonized by the English?
Ulster was a rural farming region with a small population and a significant focus on cattle and crop farming. When the English conquest of Ireland began under the watchful eye of Henry VIII in the mid-16th century, Ulster was initially left mostly unbothered. It wasn’t until the reign of Queen Elizabeth I that a plantation project was privately funded in the eastern portion of the province.

How was The Kingdom of Great Britain Formed?
How was The Kingdom of Great Britain Formed?
Going all the way back to the 16th century, England and Scotland had been two entirely different governments under different monarchs, and in the case of Scotland, uniquely controlled in part by the Highland clan system. Furthermore, for centuries now the neighboring states had been at odds and on and off warfare, with the Scottish Wars of Independence being well remembered by both sides. But, when the Queen of England died heirless in 1603, a past of diplomatic marriages and childbearing set England and Scotland on an entirely new trajectory…

City Minutes: Britain and Ireland
By far, the biggest MVPs of the British Empire were their Architects. Starting in London, best of all, then to Bath on a very easy train ride. Bath has a human scale with quiet pedestrian lanes lined with shops and galleries ideal for strolling.
York is one of the most historic cities in England. We will be showing you the great old buildings, some street entertainment – presenting you a summary with more details in other programs in our series.
Lake District is a very popular holiday destination, famous for, forests, mountains, quaint villages and lakes designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017. Four of the top activities are exploring the towns, taking boat rides, do a little nature walking, and take a driving tour of the region to see the other nearby lakes and quaint villages.
In Scotland, Edinburgh’s Old Town has retained many of its original buildings and the 18th century New Town is also well-preserved, both still functioning as a great examples of healthy urban neighborhoods.
Ireland is a small country blessed with the rich variety of wonderful sites, most famous for its green rolling hills, history, friendly people, and Guinness. Our three main destinations will be Dingle, Galway and of course Dublin, capital of the country, a great center of culture, learning and nightlife. We'll bring you inside prehistoric stone structures in Dingle. We'll take a trip out to the Aran Islands by ferry, a remote place with a great many archaeological sites, traditional culture and spectacular sea cliffs. We will be visiting small villages along the way: Clifden, Killarney then Kinsale, a southern town with colorful buildings and an ancient stone fort. Dublin is a wonderful city, but don't make the mistake when you're visiting Ireland of only going to Dublin – there's so much more to see.

By far, the biggest MVPs of the British Empire were their Architects. So let's take a look at four cities from Britain and Ireland to see how the empire redefined its cities and subsequently set the model for modern urbanism! Look, what I'm trying to say is that they did cool stuff and now they look real nice.
FUN TIMES WITH PROBLEMATIC HISTORICAL NOMENCLATURE: The term "British Isles" is strongly contested by Academics in particular and most Irish in general, as it suggests (rather imperially) that Ireland belongs to Britain. I myself am guilty of this usage in the past, I own that mistake, and I'll avoid it in the future. Accordingly, this video is titled "Britain and Ireland" and the video thumbnail bears the simple moniker of "The Isles"... with the added benefit that the single-line formatting makes it fit neatly on top of the horizontal line in St George's cross and it looks beautifully sharp, but that's just my undying commitment to aesthetics in action.
SOURCES & Further Reading: "The Great Cities in History" entries on Dublin Edinburgh & London by John Julius Norwich, Rick Steves Europe "Dublin and Mystical Side Trips", "Edinburgh", "London: Historic & Dynamic", Britannica entries on Cardiff, Dublin, Edinburgh, London.
