George William Gordon (1820 – 23 October 1865) was a Jamaicanbusinessman, magistrate and politician who was a leading critic of the policies of the governor of Jamaica Edward Eyre. On Eyre's orders, he was executed after the Morant Bay rebellion. Gordon's execution created huge controversy in Britain, and several attempts were made to charge Eyre with murder. On the centenary of his death, he was proclaimed a National Hero of Jamaica.
Early life
Gordon was the second of eight children born to a Scottish planter, Joseph Gordon (1790?–1867) and a mulatto slave, Ann Rattray (1792? – before 1865). He was self-educated, teaching himself to read, write, and perform simple accounting. At ten, Gordon was allowed to go and live with his godfather, James Daly of Black River. Within a year, Gordon began working in Daly's business. Gordon became a businessman and a landowner in the parish of St Thomas-in-the-East. His siblings are Mary Ann Gordon (1813?), Margaret Gordon (1819?), Janet Isabella Gordon (1824?), John Gordon (1825?), Jane Gordon (1826?), Ann Gordon (1828?) and Ralph Gordon (1830).
William R. P. George (1912–2006), lawyer, former Archdruid of Wales, author, nephew of the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Lloyd George
William Jones Gordon Jr., bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Alaska from 1948 to 1974, was known as the "Flying Bishop of Alaska" for his ministry of flying his own plane across the vast diocese.
Gordon, born in 1918 in North Carolina, was a priest's son and attended Virginia Theological Seminary. Invited to Alaska by Bishop John B. Bentley in 1943, he served five years as missionary-in-charge on the Arctic Coast. Gordon was consecrated bishop of Alaska on 18 May 1948 in the Church of the Good Shepherd, Raleigh, North Carolina by 13 bishops of the Episcopal Church of the USA - among them was his predecessor, Bishop Bentley, Bishop Edwin A. Penick of North Carolina and Presiding Bishop Henry Knox Sherrill who served as chief consecrator. He retired in 1974 and later served as assistant bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan. Gordon died in Midland, Michigan, in 1994.
In order to continue Gordon's ministry, the Diocese of Alaska founded the Wings of the Spirit Transportation Endowment in 1992 as a non-profit corporation.
GeneralWilliam Gordon (1736 – 25 May 1816), of Fyvie, was a British general and courtier. He was several times returned to Parliament by the interest of the Duke of Marlborough, and precipitated a family quarrel with his nephew, the Duke of Gordon, by commandeering a regiment that the latter was raising.
On his grand tour of Europe, he passed through Rome, where he was painted by Pompeo Batoni in 1765–66, wearing the uniform of the 105th but with his tartan arranged like a toga.

George was self-educated and used his influence and power to leverage the freed people of Jamaica.
He subdivided his own lands, selling acres to Black people as cheaply as possible, and organised a system so they were able to sell their produce at fair prices.
George encouraged the Jamaican people to protest against and resist the oppressive and unfair conditions that they were forced to live in.
On the 11th of October 1865, George’s friend Baptist Deacon Paul Bogle led a protest to Morant Bay, or also known as the Morant Bay Uprising.
This was to object against the unfair arrest warrants issued to 27 men of the Stony Gut community in Jamaica.
The governor of Jamaica Edward Eyre prosecuted Black Jamaicans severely, even if they were not involved.
George was accused of inciting a violent rebellion when in fact he had nothing to do with it and was in Kingston, Jamaica at the time.
He was tried illegally and executed on the 23rd October 1865, as was Paul the next day.
The news reached Britain and the country was divided - half wanted Edward Eyre to be tried for murder, and another defended his actions.
The Jamaica Committee was set up by liberally-minded politicians and Charles Darwin.
Those that defended Edward Eyre’s actions included Charles Dickens…
Edward was guilty of murder however, he was never imprisoned.
George was later recognised as a National Hero of Jamaica in 1969.
