Porter then went on to do research at Cambridge under Norrish where he began the work that ultimately led to them becoming Nobel Laureates.
His original research in developing the technique of flash photolysis to obtain information on short-lived molecular species provided the first evidence of free radicals. His later research utilised the technique to study the minutiae of the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis, with particular regard to possible applications to a hydrogen economy, of which he was a strong advocate.
He was the eldest son of Endymion Porter and Olivia Butler. On 19 June 1641 Charles I recommended him to the Earl of Ormonde to be allowed to transport a regiment of a thousand of the disbanded soldiers of the Irish army for the service of Spain.
At the start of the Civil War he appears to have served under Prince Rupert, and then became commissary-general of horse in the army of the Earl of Newcastle. In March 1644 Porter was engaged in fortifying Lincoln, and at the battle of Marston Moor, where he was wounded, he held the rank of major-general of Newcastle's foot.
Parliament sent him to the Tower of London but later allowed him to be exchanged. On his release Porter became lieutenant-general and commander of the horse in the army of George Goring, Lord Goring, in the west of England. Over Goring he was considered a bad influence. At Ilminster on 9 July 1645 he allowed Goring's cavalry to be surprised and routed by Edward Massey. Goring declared that he deserved to be shot, and a few weeks later told Edward Hyde that he suspected Porter of treachery as well as negligence; his final verdict was that "his brother-in-law was the best company, but the worst officer that ever served the king". Porter then quarrelled with Colonel Samuel Tuke, over promotion.
George Joseph Porter, Jr. (born December 26, 1947) is an American musician, best known as the bassist and singer of The Meters. Along with Art Neville, Porter formed the group in the mid 1960s and came to be recognized as one of the progenitors of funk. The Meters disbanded in 1977, but reformed in 1989. Today the original group still plays the occasional reunion but the Funky Meters, of which Porter and Neville are members, most prominently keeps the spirit alive.
George Porter is a high school hurdler. While running for Cabrillo High School in Lompoc, California, he set the NFHS (United States High School) record in the 300 meters intermediate hurdles at 35.32 on May 24, 1985, in the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet (a qualifying meet for the CIF California State Meet). Porter's record in the hurdles lasted until the State Meet in 2007, when Jeshua Anderson of Taft High School improved the record by .04 of a second. Reggie Wyatt has since improved the record again to 35.02, set at the same meet in 2009. Porter went on to win the State Meet with a time of 35.50.
Porter's key to success was his ability to run 13 steps between hurdles, the same trait as Olympic champion Edwin Moses. Moses could run 13 steps between all ten hurdles of the 400 metres hurdles race, while Porter was able to do it for six as a junior, adding the last two hurdles the high school race his senior year.
Porter continued hurdling in college, running for the University of Southern California, but did not perform as well. He managed to run 49.19, number 5 on USC's all time list. Porter entered the American top ten in the 400 hurdles twice, in 1989 and 1990.
George Porter (died 1856) was an English architect, based in Bermondsey, then part of Surrey, in the early- to mid-nineteenth-century.
Life and career
Porter was appointed district surveyor to the parishes of St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, and St. Mary, Rotherhithe, Surrey, in 1824. He still held the posts in 1832, when he gave his address as Fort Place, Bermondsey.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1815 and between 1834 and 1837. Works he showed there included "Design for a Museum" (1815), "Villa in Surrey" (1834), "Villa on Brighton road" (1835) and "London Leather warehouse" (1837).
He died in 1856. At the time of his death he was described as district surveyor of Newington and the central division of Lambeth.
Works
Porter was responsible for the alterations to the west end and tower of the parish church of St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, carried out in 1830, which gave them their present "Gothick" appearance. He also restored the medieval west window.
The Free Watermen and Lightermen’s Almshouses (generally known as the "Royal Watermen's Almshouses") on Beckenham Road, Penge, Kent, were built in "Tudor" style to Porter's designs in 1840-1 by the Company of Watermen and Lightermen of the City of London for retired company Freemen and their widows. It is the most prominent and oldest of the Victorian almshouses in Penge. In 1973, the almspeople were moved to a new site in Hastings, and the original buildings converted into private homes.

Biography
Porter was born in 1786 in Queenborough, England. In 1809, he married Elizabeth Bassett, with whom he had eleven children. She was the daughter of a Kentish dredger, Henry Bassett, operating in the badly silted estuaries of the Swale and Medway.
Porter was a senior sea captain in the employ of the British East India Company, working mainly as a whaler. The deteriorating economic conditions in Queenborough and his positive experiences in the western Pacific seem to have led to the family’s decision to emigrate to Australia with most of their children in October 1839. Their youngest child, Frederick Charles Porter, became an explorer and miner in the Victorian goldfields. The migration may also have been influenced by his cousin, Captain William Field Porter (born, 1784), who had financed and led what was to be an unsuccessful party of settlers to Port Lincoln in two ships, nine months earlier. He helped his cousin set up one of the first shipping services operating out of Port Lincoln and Port Adelaide to Australian and New Zealand ports.
