Gary Robert Rossington (born December 4, 1951) is an American musician, best known as a founding member of Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He plays lead and occasional rhythm guitar. He is also a founding member of The Rossington-Collins Band along with former Lynyrd Skynyrd bandmate, Allen Collins. Rossington is the last original member still with the band as of 2016.
Biography
His mother Berniece (for whom the song by Lynyrd Skynyrd is named for as a tribute by Rossington) recalled that Gary had a childhood interest in baseball and aspired to become a New York Yankee, and Gary himself recalled that he was a "good ball player" until he heard The Rolling Stones and gave up his baseball career.
Rossington formed the band "The Noble Five" as a teenager with friends Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Larry Junstrom and Bob Burns in the summer of 1964. They would later change the name of the band to "The One Percent" before becoming Lynyrd Skynyrd. Skynyrd gained national exposure starting in 1973 with the release of their first album (pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd) and hit single "Free Bird".
It has a population of 13,255.Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield is around two miles to the east. The village is demarcated to the north and west by a line of 400kV pylons, as seen from the M18, to the north. The Finningley and Rossington Relief Road Scheme - from Junction 3 of the M18 to Parrot's Corner (junction of the A638 and the B6463 roads) - is proposed to allow access to the airport. Construction was due to start in late summer 2012 though initial site clearance work only commenced in early 2013 .
To the north-west, the village borders Loversall, with the boundary following the River Torne, passing directly next to the western edge of the former Rossington Main Colliery. It briefly crosses the M18 at the point where the motorway crosses the East Coast Main Line. At this point it meets the Borough of Doncaster and follows Mother Drain, then the River Torne, north of Torne Valley Farm. It passes by a Roman fort and crosses the A638 at Rossington Bridge, north of Rossington Bridge Farm. At Wheatcroft Farm it meets Finningley. Nearby at the junction of the A638 and B6463, there is a park and ride car park. The boundary passes along the west of Hurst Plantation, and meets the A638, a former Roman road, at Warren House Farm. Following the A638 at Mount Pleasant Hotel, it meets Austerfield. In the south-east of the parish is the Northern Racing College (for horse racing), next to Rossington Hall School. At Bawtry Forest, it meets Bawtry. Crossing the B6463 at New England Cottages, it meets Tickhill. At Stancil Bridge, it meets the River Torne and Wadworth.

It has a population of 13,255, increasing to 13,557 at the 2011 Census. Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield is around two miles to the east. Undoubtedly Doncaster's South Eastern parishes are some of the most important in the borough. That's not to say the likes of Sykehouse, Moss, Brodsworth, Hampole etc are not in their own way, but the town of Bawtry as we saw in that video, and the neighbouring town of Tickhill, which is coming soon on the channel are extremely important places historically, and Auckley, Finningley and Blaxton all have had their role to play in the development of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, and then there's Austerfield with the Pilgrim Fathers history. Add this one to that list for a much different reason.
You see this one these days is one gigantic settlement, but it used to be six, count 'em, SIX, individual settlements that have grown over the years to form the parish we know today, with only one of the original six - Hesley - remaining unconnected to the others via the urban sprawl.
Coal mining has been the primary factor for growth. You would be forgiven for thinking I'd gone back to Maltby or Thurcroft here, because this place was built in the exact same "Model Village" style that we are accustomed to seeing in former coal mining areas. Of course, the pit is gone now, but here it only finally ceased to be in 2007. It had, comparatively speaking, a long innings compared to other local pits.
There's more to this one that coal mining now though. Here you will find new developments on the back of a £100m project covering the 1,200 acres that the pit once stood on. There's also some ancient history here when you look around, including not only the 800 year old church but the intriguing fountain/well on Station Road, and the various Tudor style buildings that accentuate the old village's already oozing charm.
Make no mistake about it though, this one's big. VERY big. It's not a town by definition, but it's no less important than one. This is ROSSINGTON.

Rossington formed the band "The Noble Five" as a teenager with friends Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Larry Junstrom and Bob Burns in the summer of 1964. They would later change the name of the band to "The One Percent" before becoming Lynyrd Skynyrd. Skynyrd gained national exposure starting in 1973 with the release of their first album (pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd) and hit single "Free Bird".
