Introduction to the Gamma function & the Pi function (extending the factorial!)
The usual definition for a factorial only works for positive whole numbers, but how can we take the factorial of any number? Here we will discuss the Pi Function which is defined in terms of an improper integral and it is also the cousin of the Gamma function. I also show the Pi function's properties, which helps extend the factorial. As a bonus, I also show why zero factorial is equal to 1.

The Gamma Function
Is it possible to define (1/2)!? Can we define the factorial of non-integer values? As it turns out, we can! To do this we need to introduce an important function from higher-level mathematics called the gamma function. Don't worry: I keep everything at a level that only requires understanding calculus 2, specifically integration by parts and improper integrals. We go through everything: motivating the gamma function, some of it's basic values, how to relate factorials to the gamma function, and proving an important property of the gamma function. In this video, I walk through the derivation of an extension of the factorial function that works for any number: fractional, irrational, and even complex! This turns out to be a very important function, known as the gamma function, which has many surprising connections, one of which I explore in the last chapter of the video.

Is it possible to define (1/2)!? Can we define the factorial of non-integer values? As it turns out, we can! To do this we need to introduce an important function from higher-level mathematics called the gamma function. Don't worry: I keep everything at a level that only requires understanding calculus 2, specifically integration by parts and improper integrals. We go through everything: motivating the gamma function, some of it's basic values, how to relate factorials to the gamma function, and proving an important property of the gamma function.
