TikToker trapped in gambling addiction that nearly destroyed his life - BBC Newsnight
Following multiple delays, the UK government’s new review on gambling is expected to be released later this week, amid mounting concerns about gambling's harm on people's finances and mental health.
The industry has dramatically changed since the Gambling Act was brought in, in 2005 - most significantly the booming online market, driven by the ubiquity of smartphones.
Clinicians and charities say users have been failed by the lack of regulation. One of those is 27-year-old Lewis who has lost £100,000 to gambling, relapsed 12 times, and at his lowest point contemplated suicide.

Inside the brain of a gambling addict - BBC News
What happens inside the brain of a gambling addict when they make a bet - and can the secret to their addiction be found within the brain itself? BBC Panorama filmed a unique experiment designed to find out. Wendy Bendel's partner killed himself after struggling with a 20-year gambling addiction. In a confession he wrote for Wendy he singled out the high-stakes, high-frequency fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs) found in bookmakers across the UK. Australians are the world’s biggest gamblers, losing $25bn a year. And poker machines are their preferred choice of poison.
Despite its relatively small population, the country is home to 20 percent of the world’s "pokies", as the machines are known locally, with most found in community pubs and clubs.
Gambling causes widespread social destruction, but taking on the vested interests behind an industry that generates billions in profits and taxes has proved extremely difficult.
Now, after decades of failure, state governments are fighting back.
