Gaius Laelius C.f. Sapiens (born c. 188 BC), was a Roman statesman, best known for his friendship with the Roman general and statesman Scipio Aemilianus (Scipio the Younger) (d. 129 BC). He was consul of 140 BC, elected with the help of his friend, by then censor, after failing to be elected in 141 BC. Gaius Laelius Sapiens was the son and heir of the Punic war general Gaius Laelius himself consul in 190 BC. This Laelius had been former second-in-command and long-time friend, since childhood, of the Roman general and statesman Scipio Africanus. The younger Laelius was apparently born around 188 BC, after his father had become consul but had failed to win command of the campaign against Antiochus III the Great of Syria which would have made him a rich man. His mother's name is unknown.
Political significance
Laelius was a candidate for the consulship in 141 BC, but withdrew his candidacy thanks to the false promises of a novus homo, Quintus Pompeius (a distant relative of the future Pompey the Great), who promised to also step down but then returned to the field after Laelius had formally withdrawn. Pompeius thus became consul along with Gnaeus Servilius Caepio (of a family traditionally allied with the Cornelii Scipiones), and Scipio Aemilianus suffered a humiliating political reverse. Aemilianus got his friend elected consul in the following year (140 BC) along with Quintus Servilius Caepio, who was the third successive Servilii Caepione brother to become consul in as many years.
Gaius Laelius — also Caius Lelius — general and statesman, was a friend of Scipio Africanus, whom he accompanied on his Iberian campaign (210–206 BC; the Roman Hispania, comprising modern Spain and Portugal). His command of the Roman fleet in the attack on New Carthage and command of the Roman & Italian cavalry at Zama contributed to Scipio's victories.
Background
According to some Roman historians, including Polybius (Book 10), Laelius was a friend of Scipio from childhood; however, his family background is obscure. This obscurity unfortunately extends to how he became acquainted with Scipio in the first place. Livy suggested that he was not from a rich family, since he wanted command of the campaign against Antiochus the Great in 190 BC to repair (or more likely make) his family fortunes.
Polybius suggests that Laelius was a companion of Scipio from their earliest days in the army together, since Laelius was apparently a witness of Scipio's rescue of his father in a skirmish that was probably the Battle of Ticinus in late 218 BC.
Gaius Laelius Sapiens followed in his father's footsteps by serving as the right-hand man of a Scipio. This member of the Laelius family earned his agnomen Sapiens ("the Wise") by lacking the courage of his convictions and putting the approval of his colleagues above the interests of the Roman people.

Quick Review - Cicero’s “How to Grow Old” | 1 Minute Book Review
1 minute book review and summary of How to Grow Old by Cicero. Cicero was a Roman statesman and philosopher and in How to Grow Old: Ancient Wisdom for the Second Half of Life Cicero shares his view on old age. Cato Maior de Senectute ("Cato the Elder on Old Age") is an essay written by Cicero in 44 BC on the subject of aging and death. To lend his reflections greater import, Cicero wrote his essay such that the esteemed Cato the Elder was lecturing to Scipio Aemilianus and Gaius Laelius Sapiens.

The Failure to Reform: Rome's Institutions Slide Into Crisis
In this lecture, we focus on the failure of the Roman Senate to address the socio-economic problems which emerged over the course of the 2nd Century. I argue that this refusal to reform was at the heart of why the Late Republic was unstable and helped to set the stage for the fall of the Republic.

Appius Claudius Pulcher, Consul 143, Censor 136, and Princeps Senatus 136 BCE
Tiberius Gracchus' father-in-law, Appius Claudius Pulcher was a reform-minded Roman politician who was a key player in the fight for reform in 133. Although later histories focus more on the deeds of the young Gracchi and the opponents of reform, Appius Claudius Pulcher was nonetheless arguably the prime mover of the reform movement. Had he been more successful, then it is quite possible that the Gracchi would have succeeded and that the course of Roman history in the Late Republic would have been far different.

Pansa was a supporter of Julius Caesar and a major player within the Caesarian faction following Caesar's death. His untimely death at Forum Gallorum in 43 B.C.E. prevented him from playing a larger role in the last days of the Republic, but he did leave the young Octavian with an important piece of advice.

Laelius (Sir Robert Pipon Marett) was born 20th November 1820. One of the most esteemed Jèrriais poets (notably well-regarded not only by Victor Hugo, but also Algernon Swinburne), one of the founders of Jèrriais lexicography, and influential in the development of standard literary Jèrriais, he also had a political and legal career and was Bailiff of Jersey at this death in 1884. In this lecture, we focus on the failure of the Roman Senate to address the socio-economic problems which emerged over the course of the 2nd Century. I argue that this refusal to reform was at the heart of why the Late Republic was unstable and helped to set the stage for the fall of the Republic.

In this video, I explore the career of Pompey the Great's father, who was a major figure in his own right. Pompeius Strabo played a pivotal role in both the Social War of 91-88 BCE and during the extended and intermittent civil war between Sulla and Marius from 88-83.

This video is about the short-lived teenage emperor Heraclonas, who was the co-inheritor of Heraclius' realm and the product of the union between Heraclius and Martina.
This video is dedicated to the career of Gaius Laelius, a constant companion of Scipio Africanus and one of the truly great legates in Roman history, rivaled only by Titus Labienus.
