Hundreds of police were injured last night and more than 900 people arrested. Ministers asked for public transport across France tonight to be suspended, and some major events have been cancelled as the government tries to stop scenes like this taking place for the fourth night running.
The protests began in a Paris suburb on Tuesday when a police officer shot dead a 17-year-old boy of north African descent during a traffic stop in the Nanterre. Footage of the shooting was posted online.

The activists took to the streets to vent their anger over the party’s first-round victory by destroying public property on Sunday.

French riot police and protesters clashed during the traditional May Day labour union march in Paris on Wednesday (May 1), as tear gas was thrown and several fires lit.
Emergency services were seen extinguishing a van on fire on the corner of Rue Moreau and Avenue Daumesnil, while police in riot gear surrounded the vehicle.
The protests started at Place de la Republique, and were heading towards Place de la Nation, passing by Boulevard Voltaire.

Author Douglas Murray says French President Emmanuel Macron has “unleashed terrible forces” on the country following the far-left’s victory in the recent election.
Mr Murray said it is the fault of Mr Macron for his “hubris” that riots broke out in the street following the election.
It comes after France’s far-Right party lost to the far-left in a shock election result.
“Paris is about to host the Olympics, what a sign to the world,” Mr Murray said.
“The world’s eyes are going to be on Paris and we see this … my belief is that political extremism can come from any direction.
“Macron has unleashed terrible forces and it’s astonishing for a man who glided into office on his alleged ability to sort of bring people together.”

Author Douglas Murray says French President Emmanuel Macron has “unleashed terrible forces” on the country following the far-left’s victory in the recent election.
Mr Murray said it is the fault of Mr Macron for his “hubris” that riots broke out in the street following the election.
It comes after France’s far-Right party lost to the far-left in a shock election result.
“Paris is about to host the Olympics, what a sign to the world,” Mr Murray said.
“The world’s eyes are going to be on Paris and we see this … my belief is that political extremism can come from any direction.
“Macron has unleashed terrible forces and it’s astonishing for a man who glided into office on his alleged ability to sort of bring people together.”
