French North Africa was a collection of territories in North Africa controlled by France and centering on French Algeria. At its height, it was a large part of the Maghreb.
The origins of French North Africa lay in the decline of the Ottoman Empire. In 1830, the French captured Algiers; and, from 1848 until independence in 1962, Algeria was treated as an integral part of France. Seeking to expand their influence beyond Algeria, the French established protectorates to the east and west of it. The French protectorate of Tunisia was established in 1881, following a military invasion, the French protectorate in Morocco in 1912. These lasted until 1955, in the case of Morocco, and 1956, when full Tunisian independence arrived.
The campaign was fought between the Allies and Axis powers, many of whom had colonial interests in Africa dating from the late 19th century. The Allied war effort was dominated by the British Commonwealth and exiles from German-occupied Europe. The United States entered the war in 1941 and began direct military assistance in North Africa on 11 May 1942.
Fighting in North Africa started with the Italian declaration of war on 10 June 1940. On 14 June, the British Army's 11th Hussars (assisted by elements of the 1st Royal Tank Regiment, 1st RTR) crossed the border from Egypt into Libya and captured the Italian Fort Capuzzo. This was followed by an Italian counteroffensive into Egypt and the capture of Sidi Barrani in September 1940 and then in December 1940 by a Commonwealth counteroffensive, Operation Compass. During Operation Compass, the Italian 10th Army was destroyed and the GermanAfrika Korps—commanded by Erwin Rommel, who later became known as "The Desert Fox"—was dispatched to North Africa during Operation Sonnenblume to reinforce Italian forces in order to prevent a complete Axis defeat.
The distinction between North Africa and much of Sub-Saharan Africa is historically and ecologically significant because of the effective barrier created by the Sahara Desert for much of modern history. From 3500 BC, following the abrupt desertification of the Sahara due to gradual changes in the Earth's orbit, this barrier has culturally separated the North from the rest of the continent. As the seafaring civilizations of the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Muslims and others facilitated communication and migration across the Mediterranean Sea, the cultures of North Africa became much more closely tied to Southwestern Asia and Europe than Sub-Saharan Africa. The Islamic influence in the area is also significant, and North Africa is a major part of the Islamic world.
From the mid 7th century, the Arab slave trade saw Muslim Arabs enslave Africans following an armistice between the Rashidun Caliphate and the Kingdom of Makuria at the Second Battle of Dongola in 652. They were transported along with Asians and Europeans across the Red Sea, Indian Ocean, and Sahara desert.
French North Africa in World War 1 I THE GREAT WAR Special
Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco were all part of French North Africa before and during World War 1. They all contributed in material and men to the war effort and the French colonial soldiers were praised for their bravery.

How France’s Colonial Past Explains Its Racism Today
Despite resistance from French elite, there’ve been growing calls for France to recognize and apologize for its violent colonization of millions of people in Africa and Asia. In fact, by 1901, France ruled 79 million people over 4.6 million square miles.
“Where would France be without its colonies in the Caribbean?” asks Professor Mame-Fatou Niang. “Where would France be without its huge possessions in Sub-Saharan Africa? Where would France be without its possessions in Asia, without Algeria?”

The Allied invasion of Vichy French North Africa in 1942, known as Operation Torch, was the first mass involvement of U.S. troops in the European-North African Theatre and the first major airborne assault carried out by the U.S.
This was a complex and daring operation. It intended to draw Axis forces away from the Eastern Front. The goal was to relieve pressure on the Soviet Union, adding additional political tension.
The American troops were led by the warship USS Ranger, as well as four escort carriers. Morocco's defenses included French destroyers, submarines, and a rather old battleship that eventually sank. The French equipment was being man...

The French equipment was being manned by Vichy French forces that collaborated politically with the Germans but strained to stay militarily neutral in the face of Nazi occupation and Allied encroachment.
In a surprising and quite ironic turn of events, they also had more than a hundred American built planes, such as Douglas DB-7s, Martin 167 Baltimore light bombers, and Curtiss H-75A fighters, that had been supplied to the fallen French republic.
In this operation, American planes would be fighting American planes.
The British initially felt that the American landing in northern Europe was premature and would eventually lead to disaster at that stage of the war. However, the invasion of Vichy French North Africa accomplished much for the Allies.
The operation allowed American and British forces to seize the offensive after three arduous years of German and Italian troops dictating events' tempo. It changed the course of the war.
This iconic battle of World War 2 turned out to be more important than it initially was thought.

BAKU - Françafrique, literally meaning France in Africa, melded into one term, refers to France’s powerful, inseparable synergy with its former empire in the African continent. It revolves around political and economic patronage, as well as military cooperation. For decades, the doctrine allowed the French to maintain their grip on Africa, affecting its former colonies to the nucleus while being invisible to the naked eye.

When most countries conquer overseas lands they keep them as colonies. Yet in the case of Algeria, France made it a part of France itself in the same way that Paris or Corsica were. So why did France do this and how did a part of France itself manage to become independent? To find out watch this short and simple animated history documentary.
