Schubert: Symphony No. 8 Unfinished | Iván Fischer & Budapest Festival Orchestra
Unfinished and yet the most famous: Symphony in B minor “Unfinished” by Franz Schubert performed by the Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFO) conducted by Iván Fischer. The concert took place on February 28, 2014 at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in Budapest.
(00:00) I. Allegro moderato
(15:00) II. Andante con moto
Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828) had already composed six complete symphonies by 1820, all of which were successors to the works of the great classical symphonists Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. It was followed by symphony drafts which Schubert then abandoned. Only from the third draft did he complete two movements in 1822, including orchestration. Of a third movement – the Scherzo – only a few bars exist. Although the two completed movements of this B minor symphony have gone do...

Franz Schubert String Quintet in C Major, D. 956
Played by The Borodin Quartet With Alexander Buzlov (cello) - The Quintet was to be Schubert’s last completed chamber work. Just a few weeks after having completed the Quintet, Schubert died at three o’clock in the afternoon on November 19, 1828. It is widely believed to be among the handful of greatest chamber works ever composed.
The Borodin Quartet was formed in 1945 by four students from the Moscow Conservatory. Calling itself the Moscow Philharmonic Quartet, the group changed its name to Borodin Quartet ten years later and remains one of the very few existing established chamber ensembles with uninterrupted longevity. The current members of the Quartet are Ruben Aharonian, Sergei Lomovsky, Igor Naidin and Vladimir Balshin.

Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828) was an Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic eras. Despite his short lifetime, Schubert left behind a vast oeuvre, including more than 600 secular vocal works (mainly lieder), seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music, and a large body of piano and chamber music.
Born in the Himmelpfortgrund suburb of Vienna, Schubert showed uncommon gifts for music from an early age. In 1808 he became a pupil at the Stadtkonvikt school, where he became acquainted with the orchestral music of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. He left the Stadtkonvikt at the end of 1813, and returned home to live with his father, where he began studying to become a schoolteacher. Despite this, he continued his studies in composition with Antonio Salieri and still composed prolifically. In 1821, Schubert was admitted to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde as a performing member, which helped establish his name among the Viennese citizenry. He gave a concert of his own works to critical acclaim in March 1828, the only time he did so in his career. He died eight months later at the age of 31.
Appreciation of Schubert's music while he was alive was limited to a relatively small circle of admirers, but interest in his work increased greatly in the decades following his death. Mendelssohn, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms and other 19th-century composers discovered and championed his works. Today, Schubert is ranked among the greatest composers in the history of Western music and his work continues to be admired.

The Elfking
Who rides so late through the windy night?
It is the father and his child.
He holds the boy,
Warm and safe.
Son, why do you hide your face in fear?
Father, do you not see the Elfking?
With his crown and train?
Son, it's just the mist.
Come with me, lovely child
We'll play games
There are flowers on the beach and
My mother has golden clothes
Father, can't you hear
What the Elfking is promising me?
Be calm, my boy --
It's only the wind in the leaves.
Lovely boy, will you come with me?
My daughters will wait on you
My daughters will sing and dance for you
and rock you to sleep.
Father, do you not see
The Elfking's daughters there?
Son, it's the old willows shining
In the moonlight.
I love you -- I'm aroused by your beautiful form
And if you won't come, I will take you by force
Father, father, he has grabbed me.
The Elfking has hurt me.
The father shudders. He rides fast,
the groaning boy in his arms,
Anxious, he reaches the farm.
In his arms, the boy is dead.

When we look past the extended meditations of the sonatas into the rest of Schubert’s piano music, we tend hardly to see beyond the Wanderer Fantasy and the Impromptus. This undervalues the composer’s contribution to the work for his instrument, as the Italian pianist Alberto Miodini reveals on an extensive exploration of the sometimes slighter and lighter but often just shorter works he composed through his all-too-short career. Perhaps the late Klavierstücke D946 are best known, and justly so, for their profound and ruminative contemplation, and Miodini’s fellow-countryman Paolo Bordoni did sterling work for the Waltzes in 1970s recordings that stand the test of time, but there are still tantalising fragments that are no less worth hearing for their frustratingly unfinished status – the ‘Unfinished’ Symphony was by no means the only musical project that Schubert filed in his creative bottom drawer, so fecund was his compositional imagination that he could hardly get the ideas out fast enough. As noted by Alfred Brendel, Schubert chose to interrupt a composition ‘when it was unsatisfying or no longer interesting’ – evidence of the composer’s vigorous pursuit of his own individual Sonata style. Among the complete works here are equally little-known variation sets on melodies by Hüttenbrenner and Diabelli – works full of characteristically Schubertian energy and motive power.

Although the two completed movements of this B minor symphony have gone down in history as “Unfinished,” they appear to be self-contained. No wonder, therefore, did Schubert send it as a symphony to the Steiermärkischer Musikverein in Graz in 1823, which had appointed him an honorary member. It is possible that Schubert himself was convinced of the completed character of the two symphonic movements. Beginning in 1825, he again worked on a four-movement symphony, later known as the “Great Symphony in C Major”. Judging by the order in which they were written, the “Unfinished” symphony would have to be considered Schubert’s 7th symphony, and the “Great” his 8th. However, in his complete published works, Schubert’s symphonies were numbered according to the order in which they were found and first performed, so that it has become customary to refer to the “Great Symphony in C major” (D 944) as the seventh and the “Unfinished” (D 759) as Symphony No. 8 in B minor. In more recent sources, the reverse numbering is occasionally found.
The Symphony in B minor was not premiered until 1865, after Schubert had already been dead for 37 years. Even the premiere was a sensational success, and to this day the “Unfinished” is an absolute favorite with audiences. It is considered the first “Romantic” symphony ever because it contains much that is musically new. Its opening alone, with the mysterious and almost threatening ascending and descending melody in the low strings, builds up a tension that is maintained until the end of the two movements. Both movements are similar not only in tempo but also in structure. Somber, ominous passages are followed by sultry, homely ländler, which in turn break off abruptly, so that positive melodic lines always prove deceptive. Although the second movement seems more optimistic overall, the thematic blocks always take unexpected turns. But still, the symphony fragment ends in a kind of chorale in which the conflicting themes are reconciled.
