Fort Knox Gold | Kentucky Life | KET

What's Really Inside Fort Knox?
Located just outside Louisville, Kentucky, Fort Knox is a top-secret United States Army post surrounded in mystery and conspiracy theories. Not only does it house a majority of the nation's gold reserve, it's so exclusive that even U.S. Presidents don't get an invite. So what exactly goes on behind closed doors?

The secure facility is made of granite, concrete, and steel. No president has even been inside the Fort Knox vault since Franklin Delano Roosevelt. No single person knows the entire combination to the gold vault. The door weighs 22 tons and is impervious to machine gun fire, flamethrowers, and explosives. Each piece of the combination must be entered by a separate official. The fortress is surveilled at all times by the United States Mint Police, and all the guards who work at the fortress are highly-skilled and heavily armed. Every hallway inside Fort Knox is covered in motion detectors, video cameras, and hidden microphones. Sneaking around inside is absolutely out of the question. The gold that is deposited in the vault is transported in highly secure trucks and counted and authenticated before being put inside. It cost approximately $560,000 to build Fort Knox in 1936. That’s about $9.3 million when adjusted for inflation. Here’s a secret look inside of Fort Knox.

The iconic James Bond movie Goldfinger included scenes of gold stored in Fort Knox's United States Bullion Depository. Although the movie crew did shoot in the area, they didn't gain access to the actual depository, which remains super secret and protected with ultra-high security.
Why does the United States have a gold vault? During the Great Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt ordered gold out of circulation, and private citizens had to sell their gold to the U.S. government. A new depository was needed—preferably away East Coast cities thought to be vulnerable to attack.
The Fort Knox depository opened in 1937. Besides gold, the depository has also stored priceless documents like the Declaration of Independence and even the Magna Carta. Not all of the U.S. gold is stored here; gold is also stored at the mints in Philadelphia and Denver, at the West Point Bullion Depository, and at the San Francisco Assay Office.
The two-story building here is constructed of granite, steel, and concrete. The vault inside is made of steel and encased in concrete; the door to the vault weighs more than 20 tons.
Fort Knox historian Paul Urbahns and former vault employee Doug Simmons share captivating inside stories about the depository's history and significance.

Inside the Most Secure Building In The World. Fort Knox is renowned for housing approximately 1407.3 million ounces of the United States' gold supply, making it widely considered one of the most secure buildings globally. Its origins trace back to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's era in the early 1930s amid the Great Depression. Roosevelt aimed to stabilize the economy and bolster reserves by issuing Executive Order 6102, which required citizens to exchange gold for paper currency, boosting the US reserves significantly.
In 1935, Roosevelt and the United States Treasury Department decided to establish a new depository for the gold reserves in Kentucky, specifically at Fort Knox, known for its military history and strategic location. The decision stemmed from concerns about safeguarding the gold during potential attacks, considering Kentucky's landlocked and geographically isolated position, which made it less vulnerable compared to coastal areas.
Construction of the United States Bullion Depository, commenced in early 1936 and was completed later that year. The building's security features include reinforced materials, a vault gate resistant to torches and drills, and a 100-hour time lock mechanism accessible only to authorized personnel with specific combinations.
The responsibility of protecting the gold falls under the Department of Treasury and the US Mint Police, ensuring stringent security measures to safeguard assets valued at over $300 billion. Besides gold, Fort Knox has housed various valuable items, including historical documents like the Magna Carta, the Holy Crown of Hungary, and even a year's supply of morphine and opium during the Cold War era.
While Fort Knox is renowned for its security, the title of the largest gold depository in the United States belongs to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, housing approximately 7,000 tons of gold, primarily sourced during and after World War II from various countries seeking secure storage. Despite a gradual decline in gold holdings since its peak in 1973, Fort Knox remains a symbol of economic strength and security, upholding its legacy as a pivotal asset repository in US history.
