The air is reputed to have first been performed by the pipers of Fiach MacHugh in 1580.
The words were written by Patrick Joseph McCall (1861–1919) and appear in his Songs of Erinn (1899) under the title "Marching Song of Feagh MacHugh".
Performances
It has been performed by numerous Irish folk bands. Most notably, Planxty recorded it on their debut album. This is often recognised as the definitive recording.
Carlow (/ˈkɑːr.loʊ/; Irish:Ceatharlach) is the county town of County Carlow in Ireland. It is situated in the south-east of Ireland, 84km from Dublin. County Carlow is the second smallest county in Ireland by area, however Carlow Town is the 14th largest urban area in Ireland by population according to the 2011 census with a population of 23,030. The River Barrow flows through the town, and forms the historic boundary between counties Laois and Carlow: the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 included the town entirely in County Carlow. The settlement of Carlow is thousands of years old and pre-dates written Irish history. The town has played a major role in Irish history, serving as the capital of the country in the 14th century. It was voted the cleanest town in Ireland by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) in 2010.
Etymology
The name Carlow is an anglicisation of the Irish language name Ceatharlach. Historically, it was anglicised as Caherlagh,Caterlagh and Catherlagh, which are closer to the Irish spelling. According to logainm.ie, the first part of the name derives from the Old Irish word cethrae ("animals, cattle, herds, flocks"), which is related to ceathar ("four") and therefore signified "four-legged". The second part of the name is the ending -lach.
Cromdale (Scottish Gaelic:Crombail) is a village in Strathspey, in the Highland council area of Scotland, and one of the ancient parishes which formed the combined ecclesiastical (later civil) parish of "Cromdale, Inverallan and Advie" in Morayshire.
The present small, growing village of Cromdale lies on either side of where the A95 road crosses Cromdale Burn, between Grantown-on-Spey and Aberlour; this bridge is about 500 metres south of the confluence of the burn with the River Spey.
The village was within Inverness-shire until 1869, following which it became part of the Morayshire until 1975, when the county was divided between the Highland and Grampianregions; it is now within the Highland Council Area. The village retained Morayshire as its official postal address for many years after the change in local government boundaries.
The parish church and cemetery are located beside the River Spey at the end of Kirk Road beside the bridge which is the latest of three which replaced the nearby ferry. The bridge was financed by local residents, having been obtained as a War Surplus item from the War Office and erected in 1922 at a cost of £ 6889. The remains of an older bridge can be seen a short distance upstream; this (much lighter) bridge was swept away in 1894, the 1922 bridge replaced one that collapsed in 1921.
Cromdale is an older inner city residential neighbourhood in north east Edmonton, Alberta, Canada overlooking the North Saskatchewan River valley. According to the neighbourhood description in the City of Edmonton map utility, there was extensive redevelopment in the neighbourhood during the 1960s when several apartment buildings were constructed.
Demographics
In the City of Edmonton's 2012 municipal census, Cromdale had a population of 7003192700000000000♠1,927 living in 7003133400000000000♠1,334 dwellings, a -7.3% change from its 2009 population of 7003207900000000000♠2,079. With a land area of 1.17km2 (0.45sqmi), it had a population density of 7003164700000000000♠1,647 people/km2 in 2012.
According to the 2001 federal census, approximately one out of ten (10%) residences in the neighbourhood were constructed before the end of World War II. Two out of three residences (66.6%) were constructed during the 1960s and 1970s when several apartment buildings were constructed in the neighbourhood. A number of residences were constructed between 1946 and 1960 (8.7%) and after 1980 (14.6%).

Ireland's Housing Crisis: Ghost estate in County Carlow has 63 finished homes lying empty
The Glendale Estate outside Tullow, Carlow is one of Ireland's 75 ghost estates, even though it has 63 completed houses. Ghost estates like Glendale are not only a physical scar on the landscape but a reminder of the continuing waste that is allowed even during a housing crisis. In 2012, the 14-acre development that is Glendale estate was sold for €640,000, or just over €10,000 per house when you don't include the planning permission for the further 58 sites, included in the sale. Then the houses were not completed, all needed a kitchen fitted and groundwork done. The houses are complete now but they remain empty. There are still 75 ghost estates in Ireland, 15 years after the 2008 crash, according to the latest figures from the Department of Housing.
