How Cartoon Sounds Are Made For Movies & TV Shows | Movies Insider | Insider
Animation requires a special kind of Foley sound: more heightened, and less bound by realism. Plus, when working on cartoons, Foley artists start from scratch with no production sound to match, which opens up a world of creative possibilities. Foley artists Sanaa Kelley and Monique Reymond showed us how they created cartoony sounds for “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Rugrats,” “Invader Zim,” “Teen Titans Go!,” “Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness,” and more.
Sanaa Kelley is the owner of Reel Foley Sound in Costa Mesa, California. She has worked on cartoons like “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius,” “Scooby-Doo,” “Lilo & Stitch: The Series,” “The Wild Thornberrys,” “¡Mucha Lucha!,” and “Clifford the Big Red Dog.”

The Magic of Making Sound
In Hollywood, everything is magic and make-believe, even sounds. When you watch a film that immerses you completely in its world, you’re probably hearing the work of sound artists. If the work is done right, you won’t be able to tell that the “natural” sounds on screen are manufactured with studio props. That's the challenge for Warner Bros. Foley artists Alyson Moore, Chris Moriana and mixer Mary Jo Lang. Theirs is a practice in recreation, one creative element at a time.

How Animal Sounds Are Made For Movies And TV | Movies Insider
Foley artists use objects to create sounds based on a character’s movements and interactions in movies and TV shows. Sometimes, they will find themselves making sounds for animals. Marko Costanzo is a veteran Foley artist for c5 Sound, Inc. He has who worked on movies like “Ice Age,” “Life of Pi,” and “True Grit.” Costanzo explained how complicated it was to make the sounds of a dragonfly flapping its wings in “Men in Black,” and how he captured the footsteps of a dog at different ages in “Marley & Me.” Then, we showed him an animal clip he has never seen before and had him come up with the proper sounds on the spot.

Why It’s So Hard For Foley Artists To Make Footstep Sounds | Movies Insider | Insider
According to Foley artist Stefan Fraticelli, who’s worked on TV shows like “Parks and Recreation” and “Fargo” and movies like the “Conjuring” series, footsteps are the most challenging sound for a Foley artist to master. How Sound Is Used To Create Suspense In Horror Movies | Movies Insider
How do you convey the presence or someone or something in a scene without the audience actually seeing it? That's the special challenge of horror-movie sound design. In this episode of "Movies Insider," we visited Alchemy Post Sound, the Foley studio behind "The Invisible Man" and a slew of other horror projects, to find out how horror movies use sound to play with viewers' minds.
We had one of Alchemy's founders, Foley artist Leslie Bloome, break down a few scenes from "The Invisible Man" as case studies, recreating how his team made sounds as subtle and detailed as a faucet squeak or a faint wind chime. He also showed us how Foley artists create a range of classic horror-movie suspense sounds, from unsettling creaks to mysterious gusts of wind, and explained how all these carefully cra...

How The Sound Effects In 'A Quiet Place' Were Made | Movies Insider
For a movie with such unique sounds and audio like “A Quiet Place” these foley artists had to do things a little differently. Rather than focusing on making everyday sounds like footsteps more audible, the sound designers on the film focused on a “less is more” approach, aiming for more minimalist and more terrifying sound effects.

How Sounds Are Made For Fight Scenes In Movies And TV Shows | Movies Insider
Foley sounds are used to create sounds for human interactions on the big screen, so, naturally, they're a huge part of fight scenes. Foley artist Shaun Brennan, who’s worked on projects like “The Purge: Election Year” and “Red Dead Redemption,” showed us how some of the most crucial sounds in a fight scene are done. Sometimes, you need a piece of raw meat, or a stick of celery to get just the right sounds. Other times, a few real swords are all you need.

According to Foley artist Stefan Fraticelli, who’s worked on TV shows like “Parks and Recreation” and “Fargo” and movies like the “Conjuring” series, footsteps are the most challenging sound for a Foley artist to master. Finding the right footwear, surface, and sync is not always straightforward. For example, if he has to match a pair of high heels on-screen, real heels will produce an unpleasant sound against rocks or dirt, so he’ll use sneakers instead. And if he wants to create creepy creaking sounds on a wood floor in a horror movie, he’ll have to do it with just socks on so the sound fully comes through. Meanwhile, Stefan needs to have a really sharp ear for the subtle differences between the sounds of different types of rocks, because it won’t sound right if his Foley materials don’t exactly align with what’s on camera. Finally, keeping up with all the action on-screen involves a lot of practice in everything from rhythm to proper weight distribution. Sometimes, it sounds better to create tap-dancing sounds with your hands instead of your feet.

Why It’s So Hard For Foley Artists To Make Footstep Sounds | Movies Insider | Insider
https://wn.com/Why_It’S_So_Hard_For_Foley_Artists_To_Make_Footstep_Sounds_|_Movies_Insider_|_Insider

He also showed us how Foley artists create a range of classic horror-movie suspense sounds, from unsettling creaks to mysterious gusts of wind, and explained how all these carefully crafted sounds come together to ratchet up the tension in horror scenes, making climactic moments feel larger than life.
