Melanie Blatt
Melanie Blatt (born 25 March 1975) is an English singer-songwriter and actress. She is also the daughter of author and travel expert David Blatt. She rose to fame in 1997 as a member of the BRIT Award-winning girl group All Saints. The group have gained five number one singles, two multi-platinum albums, two BRIT Awards and have sold over 10 million records worldwide making them one of the best-selling girl groups of all time, and the second best-selling girl group in the UK. Melanie Blatt began recording a solo album in 2003, working with numerous producers including Xenomania and released her debut solo single "Do Me Wrong" in 2003. Blatt was later dropped by her record label, and her solo album was cancelled. In 2005, she made a return to music with her single "See Me", and began recording another album independently which was later shelved and cancelled in favour of the All Saints reunion. Starting in 2013, she was a judge on the television series The X Factor NZ.

2MASS J15074769-1627386 (also abbreviated to 2MASS 1507-1627) is a brown dwarf in the constellation Libra, located about 23.9 light-years from Earth. It was discovered in 2000 by I. Neill Reid et al. It belongs to the spectral class L5; its surface temperature is 1300 to 2000 Kelvin. As with other brown dwarfs of spectral type L, its spectrum is dominated by metal hydrides and alkali metals. Its position shifts due to its proper motion by 0.9031 arcseconds per year. It has a parallax of (136.4 ± 0.6) milliseconds of arc.

In a recent paper, “Is Race Modern? Disambiguating the Question”, Adam Hochman argues convincingly that there are two concepts of ‘race’ – one late medieval (i.e., mid-15th century, before 1492) and one modern (after 1492). He also introduces important distinctions between the concept of race, ‘races’ themselves, racialization, racialized groups, means and methods associated with racialization, and meanings attached to racialized traits. In this paper I want to extend Hochman’s analysis to the centuries-long period of Arab Muslim dominance in the Middle Ages, which predates mid-15th century Spain where he locates the first concept of ‘race’. Our utterances reflect where we are from, where we are right now, and where we are talking about—among many other things, including personality, social status, and the topics under discussion. As hearers, we naturally incorporate locational awareness into our understanding of what we are told. That is to say, we geographically ground the meaning of natural language utterances. In this talk, I will discuss both toponym resolution (e.g., identifying which Springfield is intended in a passage) and general text geolocation—deriving geographical gists from free-running text that perhaps has no explicit mentions of places. I’ll cover supervised and semi-supervised methods for solving these tasks. I’ll also briefly discuss how this work might generalize the now commonplace treatment of words-as-vectors into computational models of word meaning that use multi-dimensional representations over words, geography, time, and images.

Disambiguating the Question”, Adam Hochman argues convincingly that there are two concepts of ‘race’ – one late medieval (i.e., mid-15th century, before 1492) and one modern (after 1492). He also introduces important distinctions between the concept of race, ‘races’ themselves, racialization, racialized groups, means and methods associated with racialization, and meanings attached to racialized traits. In this paper I want to extend Hochman’s analysis to the centuries-long period of Arab Muslim dominance in the Middle Ages, which predates mid-15th century Spain where he locates the first concept of ‘race’. Scholars usually point to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and slavery in the Americas as the social basis for notions of an essentialized ‘black race’ and its attendant antiblack racism. But it must be remembered that “According to some scholarship, [the] importation of black slaves into Islamic lands from Spain to India constituted a continuous, large-scale migration – by caravan and sea over a period of twelve centuries, beginning in the 600s – that may have equaled in total number all the African slaves transported to the New World” (Davis 2006, 61).
I will thus explore the extent to which it makes sense to locate an even earlier ‘race’ concept in this period, and how Hochman’s various categorical determinations play out when applied in this context. For instance, was there racism in the medieval Arab Muslim world or mere colorism? Can we speak of a phenomenon analogous to White Supremacy (Light Brown Supremacy, say) in this period? What were the causes (social, economic, intellectual) driving racialization and racism/colorism in this period, and which of these should be considered primary? Finally, Hochman correctly points out that “A primary motivation for studying “race” is to help us understand and fight racism. If we want to know the historical conditions under which racism flourishes, then we need to know the history of racialization” (Hochman 2019, 650). I will thus also explore how applying Hochman’s categories to the medieval Arab Muslim period sheds light on the persistence of specifically anti-black racism today and indicates where our societal efforts to combat it might have the most effect.

They will have access to data visualization tools with which they will be able to create maps, charts, and graphs. In addition, the project will preserve collections of data about enslaved individuals and the institution of slavery for future generations.
The project will be developed by Matrix: The Center for Digital Humanities & Social Sciences at Michigan State University, in partnership with the MSU Department of History and scholars at multiple institutions of higher education in the USA and abroad. This one-and-a-half year project is phase one of a multi-phase plan. In phase one, Matrix and its partners will develop a proof of concept to demonstrate that data can be linked across eight well-established online collections. Disambiguating Explicit and Implicit Geographic References in Natural Language: When people speak, both they and their utterances are situated in place and time. Our utterances reflect where we are from, where we are right now, and where we are talking about—among many other things, including personality, social status, and the topics under discussion. As hearers, we naturally incorporate locational awareness into our understanding of what we are told. That is to say, we geographically ground the meaning of natural language utterances. In this talk, I will discuss both toponym resolution (e.g., identifying which Springfield is intended in a passage) and general text geolocation—deriving geographical gists from free-running text that perhaps has no explicit mentions of places. I’ll cover supervised and semi-supervised methods for solving these tasks. I’ll also briefly discuss how this work might generalize the now commonplace treatment of words-as-vectors into computational models of word meaning that use multi-dimensional representations over words, geography, time, and images.

In a recent paper, “Is Race Modern? Disambiguating the Question”, Adam Hochman argues convincingly that there are two concepts of ‘race’ – one late medieval (i.e., mid-15th century, before 1492) and one modern (after 1492). He also introduces important distinctions between the concept of race, ‘races’ themselves, racialization, racialized groups, means and methods associated with racialization, and meanings attached to racialized traits. In this paper I want to extend Hochman’s analysis to the centuries-long period of Arab Muslim dominance in the Middle Ages, which predates mid-15th century Spain where he locates the first concept of ‘race’. Scholars usually point to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and slavery in the Americas as the social basis for notions of an essentialized ‘black race’ and its attendant antiblack racism. But it must be remembered that “According to some scholarship, [the] importation of black slaves into Islamic lands from Spain to India constituted a continuous, large-scale migration – by caravan and sea over a period of twelve centuries, beginning in the 600s – that may have equaled in total number all the African slaves transported to the New World” (Davis 2006, 61).
I will thus explore the extent to which it makes sense to locate an even earlier ‘race’ concept in this period, and how Hochman’s various categorical determinations play out when applied in this context. For instance, was there racism in the medieval Arab Muslim world or mere colorism? Can we speak of a phenomenon analogous to White Supremacy (Light Brown Supremacy, say) in this period? What were the causes (social, economic, intellectual) driving racialization and racism/colorism in this period, and which of these should be considered primary? Finally, Hochman correctly points out that “A primary motivation for studying “race” is to help us understand and fight racism. If we want to know the historical conditions under which racism flourishes, then we need to know the history of racialization” (Hochman 2019, 650). I will thus also explore how applying Hochman’s categories to the medieval Arab Muslim period sheds light on the persistence of specifically anti-black racism today and indicates where our societal efforts to combat it might have the most effect.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded a grant of $1,472,000 to Michigan State University — the History Department and Matrix — to support the development of a project titled Enslaved: The People of the Historic Slave Trade. When completed, Enslaved will be a one-of-a-kind online data hub that promises to change fundamentally the way scholars and the general public understand African slavery and the Atlantic slave trade. Through the website, users can identify enslaved individuals and others involved in the Atlantic slave trade and run quantitative analyses of African and African diaspora populations. What will make Enslaved unique is its ability to deploy advanced digital methods and computational techniques to facilitate searches across multiple online databases that have been created by the world’s leading experts. The project will also expand existing and sponsor the creation of new databases housed at Michigan State University. Users of Enslaved will be able to access data about millions of Africans and their descendants and have the ability to draw conclusions never before dreamed possible. They will have access to data visualization tools with which they will be able to create maps, charts, and graphs. In addition, the project will preserve collections of data about enslaved individuals and the institution of slavery for future generations.
The project will be developed by Matrix: The Center for Digital Humanities & Social Sciences at Michigan State University, in partnership with the MSU Department of History and scholars at multiple institutions of higher education in the USA and abroad. This one-and-a-half year project is phase one of a multi-phase plan. In phase one, Matrix and its partners will develop a proof of concept to demonstrate that data can be linked across eight well-established online collections. The partner projects in phase one are African Origins and Voyages: The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database; The Slave Societies Digital Archive,Vanderbilt University; Dictionary of Caribbean and Afro-Latin American Biography; Dictionary of African Biography and African American National Biography, Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University; Freedom Narratives, York University; Legacies of British Slave-Ownership, University College, London; The Liberated Africans Project, University of Colorado Boulder and University of Maryland.
