Railroad Track Geometry Defects - Track Twist & Track Warp
Track Twist can be defined as a deviation from point A to point B in the rail from the normal cross level.
Track cross level is the vertical relation between the tops of both rails across from each other.
Track Twist was often referred to by old railroaders as reverse super elevation, or reverse cross level.
Track Warp is a condition of alternating positive and negative cross levels. To illustrate: take your hand and put it out flat in front of you. Now rotate it slightly to your right, then your left. that is Track Warp.
Not all track geometry cars are created equal. The most sophisticated cars measure all of these: track twist, warp, cross level, super elevation, gauge, track profile and rail cant. We don't have a geometry car, we have a hi rail truck and my eyes ...LOL

Märklin C-track Geometry (Beginner Episode 3)
The Märklin C-track have been designed to make it easy to build a layout. In this video we look at the geometry of the tracks and how they fit together. What straight and curved tracks exist? Why is the turnout as it is? How to make a siding and a parallel track? How can I use the curved turnout? …and how does all of this fit together?
Enjoy and have fun with model trains :-)

Pioneering a new way to inspect track that enhances the safety and efficiency of railroad operations
Combining ingenuity and innovation, Norfolk Southern is the first North American freight railroad to develop and deploy an autonomous track geometry measurement system that is mounted on a locomotive. Developed by NS’ track inspection group, this mold-breaking system enables the railroad to conduct precise and more frequent inspections of mainline track with a locomotive that is pulling freight. It is another example of NS’ commitment to achieve industry leadership in use of advanced technologies to enhance safety, increase operating efficiencies, and better serve our customers.

Track profile is the relationship the rails have with the sub surface beneath
the road bed. Rail cant is the degree of angle the rails have with the ties.
Normal rail cant is 3 degrees inward. I will post a future vid dedicated to super elevation,
it is a big topic to talk about. Standard gauge for North American track is
56 1/2 inches as measured 5/8's of an inch below the top of the rail head,
another video will be posted on that and how to measure it. It is interesting to
note that narrow gauge track is 36 inches, the track we have at the mine underground
and outside yard is at 44 inches, rather an oddball gauge!
Protran, a subsidiary of Harsco, offers Callistro ProTamp which measures certain track geometry then communicates with the tamper control system and suggests to the operator corrective lifts and throws. This system can also be put on a truck ahead of the tamper where it sends the geometry report back to a tamper.
Ensco makes a box car that has an autonomous track measuring system and can be put in a passenger or freight consist. It has a concrete slab on the floor of the box car for ballast to help stabilize the car and can be pulled at track speed.
Norfolk Southern is experimenting with a track geometry system that is
mounted underneath a locomotive, if that works out, that will be a really
innovative solution to recording track geometry.

- In one of the previous videos we talked about rail signaling as one of the key elements of the railway system. Today, we’ll talk about another such element, also crucial for the existence and functioning of the railway traffic. The railway track.
Railway track is a multilayered construction which typicaly includes rails, fish plates (also called joint bars or splice bars), rail fastening system, sleepers (also called ties), ballast and optionally a so called sub-ballast.
In this video we discuss the purpose of each of these elemets in the railway track, but also the role of the railway track as a whole.
All elements of the railway track must be able to absorb and transfer all forces resulting from the movements of trains (heavy static pressure plus dynamic impacts), and that from rails to sleepers, from sleepers to ballast, and finally from ballast to the base layer of the railway track.
At the end of the video, we briefly explained the ballast-less track (slab track), a type of modern and advanced railway track, in which the traditional elastic combination of sleepers and ballast is replaced by a rigid construction made of concrete or asphalt.
