In mathematical analysis, the maxima and minima (the plural of maximum and minimum) of a function, known collectively as extrema (the plural of extremum), are the largest and smallest value of the function, either within a given range (the local or relative extrema) or on the entire domain of a function (the global or absolute extrema).Pierre de Fermat was one of the first mathematicians to propose a general technique, adequality, for finding the maxima and minima of functions.
A real-valued functionf defined on a domainX has a global (or absolute) maximum point at x∗ if f(x∗) ≥f(x) for all x in X. Similarly, the function has a global (or absolute) minimum point at x∗ if f(x∗) ≤f(x) for all x in X. The value of the function at a maximum point is called the maximum value of the function and the value of the function at a minimum point is called the minimum value of the function.

Finding Local Maximum and Minimum Values of a Function - Relative Extrema
This calculus video tutorial explains how to find the local maximum and minimum values of a function. In order to determine the relative extrema, you need to find the first derivative, set it equal to zero, and solve for x which represents the critical numbers of the function. You need to put these numbers on a number line and create a sign chart. According to the first derivative test, if the sign changes from - to +, it's a relative maximum. If it changes from + to -, it's a relative minimum. This video contains plenty of examples and practice problems for you to work on.

Finding Absolute Maximum and Minimum Values - Absolute Extrema
This calculus video tutorial explains how to find the absolute maximum and minimum values of a function on a closed interval. Tto find the absolute extrema, you need to find the relative extrema by finding the first derivative of the function and the critical numbers. Plot the critical numbers on a number line to create sign chart. Using the sign chart and the first derivative test, determine what type of relative extrema is present - if it's a relative maximum or a relative minimum. Next, place the critical numbers and the endpoints of the closed interval into an x y data table and compare the y values. The absolute maximum contains highest y value and the absolute minimum has the lowest y value.

What can I do to disappear

Running fast along the beach, followed by a thousand things.
I don't have no time to rest,
This dream alone will keep me through the night.
Running fast along the beach followed by a thousand things.
I don't have no time to rest,
This dream alone will keep me through…
I stretch my hands towards the goal
and all the pain's forever gone.
I don't want to stop no more,
My reward's to be there on the Day!
When I lift my eyes, I see You!
In Your presence I can see how You wash away my tears!
You give me hope and peace and the past just disappears!

Extremum Seeking Control
This lecture provides an overview of extremum-seeking control (ESC), which is an adaptive equation free method of controlling nonlinear systems. A sinusoidal perturbation is added to the controller, and this perturbation allows the algorithm to locally optimize an objective function.

Running fast along the beach, followed by a thousand things.
I don't have no time to rest,
This dream alone will keep me through the night.
Running fast along the beach followed by a thousand things.
I don't have no time to rest,
This dream alone will keep me through…
I stretch my hands towards the goal
and all the pain's forever gone.
I don't want to stop no more,
My reward's to be there on the Day!
When I lift my eyes, I see You!
In Your presence I can see how You wash away my tears!
You give me hope and peace and the past just disappears!
I've never heard that cry before- the cry of my soul.
So I leave it all behind,
This dream alone will hold me tight.
Now I know that in my dream I have seen reality.
I don't want to stop at all,
My reward's to be there on the Day!
When I lift my eyes, I see You!

Calculus 3 Lecture 13.8: Finding Extrema of Functions of 2 Variables (Max and Min): How to find Relative (Local) and Absolute Extrema of 2 Variable Functions. Optimization is also discussed.

Lyrics
I cannot escape Your deep presence
I cannot hide my face from Your eyes
Where shall I go when you only have
living words for me!
What can I do to disappear
from Your presence my Love
Where can I escape from You
Where to hide from You
even if I step aside
You are always near
Even if I sin I will not give in
‘cause You are always near
You are always ready to hear
Nowhere I can hide You are always there
Speaking words of life!
Thank you Lord
for me You gave Your life!
Hallelujah!

Lyrics
In Your presence I can see, how You wash away my tears!
You give me hope and peace and the past just disappears!
