Montreal's Expo 67 Was A Landmark Moment in Canadian History
Completed in a record four years on artificially-built islands in the middle of the Saint Lawrence River, Expo 67 was a Category One World's Fair and the main celebration of the centenary of Canadian confederation in 1967. The scale and ambition of the project forever changed Canada, as well as the perception of Canada by foreign countries. With over 50 million visitors, the fair broke all previous attendance records and would prove to be the most successful World’s Fair of the 20th century. Still considered to this day the largest cultural event ever held in North America, Expo 67 firmly established Montreal as an international world-class city and remains etched in the memory of all those who visited.

Expo 67 - Canada (The Centennial Song)
"Canada" (also known as "Ca-na-da" or "The Centennial Song", French version "Une chanson du centenaire") was written by Bobby Gimby in 1967 to celebrate Canada's centennial and Expo 67, and was commissioned by the Centennial Commission (a special Federal Government agency).[1] The song was written in both of Canada's official languages, English and French.
The song's recording was performed by the Young Canada Singers, two groups of children — one that sang the French lyrics, led by Montreal conductor Raymond Berthiaume, and another that sang in English, under conductor Laurie Bower[2] in Toronto.[3] The musical score was composed by Ben McPeek. The song was recorded at Hallmark Recording Studios in Toronto, and the 45 rpm release was manufactured for the Centennial Commission by Quality ...

Expo '67 (1967)
Montreal, Canada.
Several shots of people enjoying themselves at the Expo '67 fairground; people are seen taking trips on gondoliers with outboard motors; other people ride on a Viking ship; a hovercraft zooms along the lake, passing several pavilions.
A lengthy sequence shows a water ski display on the lake with various stunts and jumps seen; one man takes off from the water and hang-glides over the lake. Aerial view of the Expo; several views of the monorail and wind socks. A man sells bouncing balloons in the fairground; people mill about. Various shots show different forms of transport for getting around the site: a miniature train; toddlers ride in low '7-Up' prams; a man in a bowler hat (Pathe employee John Rammell) rides in a kind of covered rickshaw 'Pedicab' as a man in a...

Documentary about the Expo 1967 in Montreal, Canada.
(FILM ID: 417.03)
Several shots show the city of Montreal; girls sit at a French cafe, a man buys a French newspaper; several shots of modern skyscrapers; a couple in a red sports car drive along the highway towards the Expo '67.
At Expo '67 we see numerous shots of the world fair, mostly from the monorail. Inside the British pavilion we see towering human figures, sculptures by Mario Armengol; visitors listen to a commentary on 'Britain's role in the modern world'. Another section shows a display depicting Carnaby Street. The Olympus jet engine, designed for Concord, is displayed. Huge books sit on a shelf; titles include 'The Spy Who Came In From The Cold', 'Goldfinger' and 'Love on the Dole'. Papier mache figures show the way of British life in 1967 (see CP 645 - PAPIER MACHE SCULPTURE for the making of these figures).
Other pavilions are seen; Canada has a giant inverted pyramid that people walk down into or travel down in lifts - brilliant! Pavilions for Ethiopia and Canadian pulp and paper are seen; people use a futuristic telephone box. Pavilions for Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Ceylon, Burma and Thailand. Two Thai girls walk beside an ornamental lake where a gondola boat sits. Several shots of a display/building called Habitat; it looks like futuristic a block of flats arranged higgledy-piggledy. Various shots from the monorail, passing the Russian and West German pavilions; the monorail train enters the huge dome of America. Views inside the dome shows a space capsule and several items of space machinery and people milling about.
Various shots of the rides at the Expo fairground; a locomotive ride, the log flume. Two lumberjacks climb rapidly to the top of logs. People are seen on a Swiss revolving viewing tower; aerial views of the site; several shots of a fairground ride (an 'umbrella-seat' roundabout).

The song was recorded at Hallmark Recording Studios in Toronto, and the 45 rpm release was manufactured for the Centennial Commission by Quality Records Ltd.
In 1971, Gimby donated all royalties to the Boy Scouts of Canada, but the song only earned one cent per airplay, which is one of the lowest rates in the world.

Various shots show different forms of transport for getting around the site: a miniature train; toddlers ride in low '7-Up' prams; a man in a bowler hat (Pathe employee John Rammell) rides in a kind of covered rickshaw 'Pedicab' as a man in a pith helmet pedals behind him.
Several shots show an English Whitbread pub called 'The Bulldog' on the site; people drink under sunshades; a waitress serves tankards of beer to some people who place a pile of Canadian dollars on her tray. On the steps of the French pavilion we see buskers performing: The Road Stars do a kind of Egyptian sand dance; Cyril Jackson plays his one-man band; three ice-skaters perform on a tiny ice-rink stage. A Mexican band play guitars before the Mexican pavilion; one of the men does a Mexican dance (hat dance?) with a woman dressed in a Peter Pan or pixie outfit.
A group of men dressed as soldiers (Canadian?) in old fashioned uniform and tricorn hats walk past carrying rifles, flags and drums. M/S of flags of all nations flying in the breeze; M/S of a large Expo '67 sign by the lake as the sun starts to set; people ride along on the monorail before fountains on the lake. Several great shots of fairground rides at dusk / night with neon lights. Several shots of fireworks in the night sky.
