It also has around 3,000 tribes, from diverse regions with varying numbers of people. 30% of the African population come from ten people groups or if you would prefer “tribes”. At first, the map of Africa's many languages seems complicated. However, in just a few minutes we'll learn how linguists classified them into just five families. Once we meet Africa's language areas, the five families begin to fall apart.
We'll leave with a complicated picture of families, hypothetical groups and many isolates and debated classifications. Along the way, come to appreciate Africa's diverse peopl...

The official population count of the various ethnic groups in Africa is highly uncertain, both due to limited infrastructure to perform censuses and due to the rapid population growth. There have also been accusations of deliberate misreporting in order to give selected ethnicities numerical superiority .A 2009 genetic clustering study, which genotyped 1327 polymorphic markers in various African populations, identified six ancestral clusters. The clustering corresponded closely with ethnicity, culture and language. A 2018 whole genome sequencing study of the world's populations observed similar clusters among the populations in Africa. At K=9, distinct ancestral components defined the Afrosiatic-speaking populations inhabiting North Africa and Northeast Africa; the Nilo-Saharan-speaking populations in Northeast Africa and East Africa; the Ari populations in Northeast Africa; the Niger-Congo-speaking populations in West-Central Africa, West Africa, East Africa and Southern Africa; the Pygmy populations in Central Africa; and the Khoisan populations in Southern Africa.

Even though this has affected how Africa and Africans have been viewed and treated, today it’s become increasingly popular to celebrate Africa’s various ethnic groups. This started relatively recently, largely due to social media and no doubt the Black Panther movie.
The official population count of the various ethnic groups in Africa is highly uncertain, both due to limited infrastructure to perform censuses and due to the rapid population growth. There have also been accusations of deliberate misreporting in order to give selected ethnicities numerical superiority (as in the case of Nigeria's Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba and Igbo people.

In this video, we shall focusing on the popular ethnic groups in the southern hemisphere and south of the sahara. So in no particular order, these are the top 12 most popular ethnic groups in Africa.
12. Ahmara
Coming in at number 10 we have the Amhara of Ethiopia., Amharas are a Habesha Ethiosemitic-speaking ethnic group traditionally inhabiting parts of the northern and central Highlands of Ethiopia, particularly in Addis Ababa and the Amhara Region. According to the 2007 national census, Amharas numbered 19,867,817 individuals, comprising 26.9% of Ethiopia's population and they are mostly Orthodox Christians members of Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
In fact, the name “Ethiopian” was used by outsiders to refer to all Africans in ancient times at one point. Even though they have this popularity, it’s rare that anyone around the globe can actually name a particular Ethiopian ethnic group.
. The Amhara have a very elaborate and glorious history beginning with the Abysinnian Empire and since then, they’ve dominated Ethiopian politics and government for quite some time.
11. Hutu
The Hutu are a Bantu ethnic group that inhabit the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa, particularly the countries of Burundi and Rwanda.
The Hutu are believed to have migrated to that region during the Bantu expansion. Their presence there is very ancient. Unfortunately, the Hutu are somewhat infamous due to the Rwandan genocide when they systematically killed thousands of Rwandans, mostly Tutsis.
Because of this horrific event, the Hutu are known throughout the world and a movie was even made concerning the event. They not only became infamous but their victims became seen on the world stage and that brings us to our next ethnic group.
10. Fulani
The Fulani number around 40 million people and they’re one of the largest ethnic groups in West Africa. The origin of the Fulani people has been a big topic of debate because they tend to have distinct features that are set apart from many other West African ethnic groups.
Their unique phenotype has constantly been discussed in books, medieval travel blogs, and even today’s social media. The Fulani played a role in shaping West Africa upon their conversion to Islam, creating various kingdoms and empires.
Ironically, the Fulani on an international level can be seen as being the most beloved and the most ridiculed ethnic group in West Africa. Their movement throughout the African continent has certainly given them fame and fortune.
The Fulani no doubt have the most consistent presence on the continent of Africa, being numerous in many West, Central and Eastern African countries. This presence alone is why they make the list.
9. Tustsi
The next Ethnic group on our list are the Tutsi. The Tutsi number around 2.5 million in the central African states of Rwanda and Burundi. The Tutsi seemed to have descended from a Nilotic population that migrated to the region of Rwanda.
This original Nilotic population were cattle herders who traveled and picked up some cultural elements from Africans in the surrounding area. They later began to mix with some Hutu populations and the Tutsi identity began to form.

In almost every case, these tribes were precolonial states, with their own language and their own independent institutions. Here are the 10 largest tribes by population in Africa.
10. The Hutu
The Hutu Tribe has a population of around 20-25 million people, settled primarily in two countries. The Hutu are the smallest of the top 10 tribes of Africa. In Rwanda and Burundi, around 85% of the people are Hutu and a combined 21 million Hutu live in these two countries.
9. The Somali
The Somali Tribe have a population of around 20 million people and can be found in the country of Somalia (where they make up the majority of the population), Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya.
8. Akan
The Akan tribe number around 20 million people and can be found in Ghana and the Ivory Coast, notably along the southern region of both countries. They also speak their own language, the Akan language which is part of the Central Tano branch of languages. The Akans have an interesting history and formed the Ashanti Empire, which was the most dominant Akan state and lasted for nearly 200 years. The Akans had many subgroups who also formed their own Kingdoms.
7. Amhara
The Amhara Tribe number around 20 million and are mostly concentrated in Ethiopia where they make up 26.9% of the total population. The Amharas are the indigenous people of Ethiopia having historically lived in the Northern, Central and Western parts of the country. The first mention in history of the Amhara dates back to the 12th century when they were in conflict with the Werjih. This proved that they had been in this area for far longer than the previous accepted date of the thirteenth century. In fact, analysis showed that they have been living in Ethiopia since over two thousand years, having lived in the Central highland plateau in Ethiopia since that period.
6. Fulani
The Fulani tribe are one of the largest ethnic groups and tribes in Africa, with over 40 million people. They live mainly in Western African nations such as Nigeria, Mali, Guinea, Cameroon, Senegal and Chad. They have their own language known as Fula. Their origins are unclear but there are many theories as to where they originated. The oral traditions of the Fulani states that they started from what is now present day Jordan. What we do know for sure is that by the 5th century, they were in West Africa. The earliest evidence we have from archaeological digs points to them starting around 6th century BC at the latest.
5. Oromo
Fifth in the list of the 10 largest tribes of Africa are the Oromo. The Oromo number around 40 million. They are mostly settled in Ethiopia and represent 34.5% of the Ethiopian population. They have their own language known as the Oromo language. They even have their own religion, which some follow to this day, known as Waaqeffanna.
4. Amazigh
The Amazigh consist of around 40 million people. They are mostly found in Morocco and
Algeria, but are also found in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Mali, Mauritiana and Niger. Most Amazigh speak the Amazigh language, though they also speak Arabic.
They have inhabited the Maghreb region in North Western Africa for over 12,000 years now. There are cave paintings from around 10,000 BC which can be attributed to the Amazigh. Numidia was an ancient Amazigh Kingdom which was very prosperous at the height of its success.
3. Yoruba
Third in the list of the 10 largest tribes of Africa are the Yoruba. The Yoruba are a tribe that consist of around 47 million people. They are mostly found in West Africa especially in Nigeria (43.4 million) and Benin (1.4 million). Most Yoruba speak the Yoruba language, which is part of the Niger-Congo family of languages.
The history of the Yoruba is very interesting. The Yoruba people have inhabited Southwest Nigeria since as early as 9,000 BC (11,000 years ago). This is based on skeletal remains found in Iwo-Eleru in present-day Ondo State, Southwest Nigeria.
2. Igbo
The Igbo are another numerous tribe consisting of about 45 million people. They are based primarily in modern day Nigeria where they make up over 18% of the population though they are also found in Guinea. They have their own language known as the Igbo language which they primarily speak.
1. Hausa
The Hausa are a huge tribe and the largest of the 10 largest tribes of Africa with an estimated population of 74 million, mostly based in Nigeria with 64 million of them living there.

Along the way, come to appreciate Africa's diverse peoples and languages.

Chinese are all the same? The many Ethnic Groups in the People's Republic of China (PRC)
A lot of people might be tempted to think that the People's Republic of China is an extremely ethnically homogeneous country, and strictly judging by ethnic identification on the official government census, they would be considered justified for thinking that, but today we're going to look at the man ethnic groups of the PRC, and why ethnicity and language in China is such a confusing topic.
Be sure to let me know your thoughts on the diverse ethnic groups of the People's Republic of China, and the Han Chinese people around the globe. Thanks for watching!

Why Indians are the Richest Ethnic Group (in America)
I recently saw research that Indian Americans have the highest median household income in the US, and was a bit surprised. I decided to take a deep dive to learn why that was, objectively. This journey took me down a rabbit hole into US policy, historical data, and my own personal experience which opened my eyes to a new perspective. Please enjoy this docu-vlog of my experience :)

The Middle East is at the center of everything, and is home to many ethnic groups which don't always get along.
The middle east is usually associated with muslims and arabs, but muslim arabs are only a part of the middle east. The middle east is also home to Turks, Persians, Kurds, Jews, Assyrians and many others.
Most of the countries of the middle east are muslim, but Israel is jewish, and Lebanon has a large christian minority. But islam is dividing into two main groups, the sunnis and the shias.
Shia muslims mostly live in Iran, southern Iraq,
Afghanistan, Lebanon, Syria, Bahrain, and Northern Yemen, while Sunni muslims are the most common muslims worldwide.
Iran and Saudi Arabia take advantage of the sunni-shia devide to claim spheres of influence in the middle east, and many conflicts split down sunni-shias lines, such as the Yemeni Civil War and the Iraqi Civil War and the Syrian Civil War
Not all muslims are arab though. Turkey and Iran are definitely not Arab and speak Turkish and Persian respectively. Most arabic speakers are arab, though many non-arabs who live near arabs speak arabic for convenience such as the Coptic Christians of Egypt and Maronite Christians of Lebanon, and the Alawites of Syria.
The President of Syria is a Shia Alawite even though the majority Syria is Sunni Arab, this contributes to tensions in the ongoing Syrian Civil War.
One sunni group fighting in the Syrian Civil War called Daesh or ISIS or ISIL decided to invade neighbouring Iraq and started the Iraqi Civil War and fought against the Shia Arabs, and the Kurds in iraqi Kurdistan.
