Beta Israel (Hebrew: בֵּיתֶא יִשְׂרָאֵל, Beyte (beyt) Yisrael; Ge'ez:ቤተ እስራኤል, Bēta 'Isrā'ēl, modern Bēte 'Isrā'ēl, EAE: "Betä Ǝsraʾel", "House of Israel" or "Community of Israel"), also known as Ethiopian Jews (Hebrew: יְהוּדֵי אֶתְיוֹפְּיָה: Yehudey Etyopyah; Ge'ez: የኢትዮጵያ አይሁድዊ, ye-Ityoppya Ayhudi), are Jewish communities that developed and lived for centuries in the area of Aksumite and Ethiopian empires (Habesha or Abyssinia), currently divided between Amhara and Tigrayregions of Ethiopia. Most of these peoples have emigrated to Israel since the late 20th century.
Beta Israel lived in North and North-Western Ethiopia, in more than 500 small villages spread over a wide territory, alongside populations that were Muslim and predominantly Christian. Most of them were concentrated in the area around and to the north of Lake Tana, in the Tigray Region among the Wolqayit, Shire and Tselemt, in the Amhara Region of Gonder, and in the Semien Province found in Dembia, Segelt, Quara, and Belesa.
The story of the Beta Israel’s return to the Land of Israel is one of broken promises, secret agreements, and the tenacity of an ancient community in the face of unimaginable danger. While the origin story of Ethiopian Jews remains unclear, their courage, faith, and love for the Jewish homeland, along with the daring of the Mossad and the activism of North American Jews, resulted in the return of thousands of Jews to Israel.

Why is Israel barring Ethiopian Jews from immigrating? | DW News
Thousands of Beta Israel Jews in the Ethiopian city of Gondar are living in limbo while waiting to emigrate to Israel. Their chances of leaving Ethiopia and joining relatives who have already made the move to Israel are being complicated by religious factors: Israel doesn't recognize them as true Jews and won't let them immigrate into the country.

Ethiopian Jewry | Israel Phenomenology | Unpacked
New channel alert https://youtube.com/@todayunpacked
- This week, we look at one of Israel’s most distinctive communities - the Jews of Ethiopia.
While the story of their rescue from Ethiopia has become a well-known tale of daring, bravery and sheer Israeli chutzpah, there’s far more to know about Ethiopian Jews than this event.
We trace the origins of this group, unpack the different terms associated with the “Beta Israel” (as the community refers to itself), and discuss why there are many Ethiopians still waiting to come to Israel.
We also dive into the whole megillah of who is a Jew, and touch on the difficult subject of racism in Israeli society, as we discuss the ongoing (and sometimes bumpy) integration of Ethiopian Jewry into Israeli society.

I'm back in Ethiopia for the 3rd time because it's one of my favorite countries in Africa! I am now exploring a city in the North called Gondar, and little did I know that I'd come across thousands of fellow Jews.

As you might know by now, I enjoy connecting with Jewish communities around the world, like I've done in Afghanistan, Yemen, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Philippines among many others -- but this experience has been the most eye-opening because of how alive the Jewish culture is.
Some 4,000 Ethiopian Jews are here, studying torah, keeping Shabbat and learning Hebrew.
If this is not a fascinating story, then I am not sure what is! Join me as I take you inside the world of the forgotten Jewish tribe of Ethiopia.

Happy 2567 to the Buddhists…. Happy 1445 to the Muslims…. Happy 1945 to the Hindus…. Happy 5782 to the Jews…. Happy 2017 to the Ethiopians…. Happy 4271 to the Chinese…. Happy 5143 to the Mayans…. And of course, a Happy 2025… to everyone else ... Just sayin’ ... .
The problem with this hypothesis is that Coates can’t decide whether or not Jews are white ... But when he is faced with a black Israeli soldier—presumably a Jew of Ethiopian descent—he says the young man is not really black.
EthiopianJews eating matzot in synagogue last year ... Thousands of Ethiopian Jews gathered in Jerusalem on Thursday to celebrate Sigd, an ancient holiday that has taken on renewed meaning amid Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas.
A collection of stories now out in Hebrew will give Israelis a rare glimpse into the hearts of their northern neighbors. Also, EthiopianJews' Sigd holiday and the PrideFilm Festival in Be'er Sheva bring good cheer ....
The thin ice that diaspora Jews have been treading is cracking audibly beneath their feet ... A powerful historical parallel emerges from Operation Solomon, when Ethiopian Jews were airlifted on Israel three decades ago.
The rapper Shyne had become an Orthodox Jew in prison and landed in Israel after being deported following his release ... Shyne emerged from his nine years in prison as a practicing Orthodox Jew ... He said his grandmother was of Ethiopian Jewish heritage.
Israel, of course, helpfully stoked this idea by promising “emergency flights” to “rescue” its football fans – seeking to evoke memories of its airlifts in the 1980s of EthiopianJews to escape famine ...
And I think one thing where you’ve said about the torture becoming the person who tortures, the Jews never had a chance to heal ... They don’t want the African-American Jews as well, they don’t want the Ethiopians.
