Anderson was born in Boston and grew up in Lynn, Massachusetts, the son of Emily (Malenson) and Ernest C. Anderson, who installed telephone systems. Anderson planned to go to law school, but instead joined the U.S. Navy during World War II to avoid being drafted. In an interview, his son Paul Thomas Anderson spoke of his military service:
Ernie Anderson recording promos at ABC's post production 6 on their Prospect Studios lot in Hollywood, the same lot where I started working a decade later. Ernie was my mentor, but I think that I made him nervous during this shoot. Ernie was definitely a one-of-a-kind VO talent and was the father of Paul Thomas Anderson.
I hung out w/Ernie starting in '89, and he told me about his one big acting job in Hollywood, appearing in a GUNSMOKE episode in the mid 60's (he said that he hated his performance). I've never been able to find the episode, but you can hear an improvised interview. that Ernie recorded w/the cast at the following youtube clip. (CAUTION: Ernie uses quite a bit of foul language in this interview)
The Final Interview with Ernie "Ghoulardi" Anderson was recorded in Los Angeles, California, in 1995.
Ernie Earle Anderson was a TV and radio announcer in Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1950s and early 60s when the TV Horror Host craze first struck America. He was asked to host a horror movie TV showcase on WJW in 1963. He hosted the show until 1968, but his legacy runs deep in Cleveland and the influence of his character lived on for decades. His one-time gofer, Ron Sweed, continued the character for some 30 years on Cleveland TV (and for a time syndicated to other cities including Detroit) after Anderson moved to Los Angeles (Sweed passed on April 1, 2019).
Anderson left Cleveland in the late 60s and moved to Los Angeles to seek greater fortune. He quickly became the "voice of ABC," serving as the network's official announcer for several decades including the 1970s, 80s, and 90s.Ernie died of lung cancer in 1997 and is interred in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, California.
Born: November 12, 1923, Boston, MA
Died: February 6, 1997, Los Angeles, CA
Anderson was born in Boston and grew up in Lynn, Massachusetts, the son of Emily (Malenson) and Ernest C. Anderson, who installed telephone systems. Anderson planned to go to law school, but instead joined the U.S. Navy during World War II to avoid being drafted. In an interview, his son Paul Thomas Anderson spoke of his military service:
