The King's Singers are a Britisha cappellavocal ensemble founded in 1968. They are named after King's College in Cambridge, England, where the group was formed by six choral scholars. In the United Kingdom, their popularity peaked in the 1970s and early 1980s. Thereafter they began to reach a wider international audience, appearing frequently on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the U.S. In 1987, they were prominently featured as guests on the Emmy Award winning ABC-TV special Julie Andrews: The Sound of Christmas.
Today the ensemble travels worldwide for its performances, appearing in around 125 concerts each year, mostly in Europe, the U.S. and the Far East, having recently added the People's Republic of China to their list of touring territories. In recent years the group have had several UK appearances at the Royal Albert Hall Proms and concerts as part of the Three Choirs Festival and the City of London Festival.
History
The group has always consisted of six singers in total, with their membership changing over the years. None of the original members remain. The first stable incarnation of the group, from late 1969 until 1978, comprised:
Eriskay (Scottish Gaelic:Èirisgeigh, pronounced[ˈeɾʲiʃkʲej]), from the Old Norse for "Eric's Isle", is an island and community council area of the Outer Hebrides in northern Scotland. It lies between South Uist and Barra and is connected to South Uist by a causeway which was opened in 2001. In the same year Eriskay became the ferry terminal for travelling between South Uist and Barra. The Caledonian MacBrayne vehicular ferry travels between Ceann a' Ghàraidh in Eriskay and Ardmore in Barra. The crossing takes around 40 minutes.
Geography
Although only a small island (about 2.5 x 1.5 miles), Eriskay has many claims to fame that have made the island well-known far beyond the Hebrides. It is associated with the traditional Hebridean song, the Eriskay Love Lilt; with the Eriskay pony and the Eriskay jersey (made without any seams). It is the real Whisky Galore! island: it was just off Eriskay that the SS Politician ran aground in 1941 with its famous cargo. On 2 August 1745 the small frigate le Du Teillay landed Bonnie Prince Charlie with his "seven men of Moidart" on Eriskay to start the 'Forty-Five Jacobite Rising. An important early documentary film, Eriskay: A Poem of Remote Lives, made by a German traveller, Werner Kissling, was set on the island.

This anthem - originally written by Harry Dixon Loes as a Christian children's song - became a musical symbol of the civil rights movement in the 1960s and 70s. It's a song that brought people together at that time of challenge and strife, united by its central message of confidence and peace. The arrangement was made by Stacey V. Gibbs for our 'Finding Harmony' album which we released in 2020.

Explore the beautiful remote islands of Uist (North and South) and Eriskay in Scotland's Outer Hebrides (also known as the Western Isles). The Outer Hebrides are an archipelago of islands in the north west of Scotland whose culture and landscape has been influenced by remoteness and by their exposure to the extreme weather systems of the North Atlantic. A Hebridean Odyssey: Part 4 - Isle of Eriskay
This video is the fourth in a series that documents a trip taken in May 2022, in which we visited 16 of the Hebridean islands. This episode is a video diary of places visited, scenery seen and roads driven on the Isle of Eriskay, the most southerly of the Uists in the Western Isles.
Eriskay is tiny with a population of around 130 people, but has plenty of history and beautiful scenery. It was the first place Bonnie Prince Charlie set foot on Scottish land in 1745 (on “Charlie’s Beach”). In 1941 the SS Politician ran aground here, spilling its cargo onto Eriskay's shores, including 260,000 bottles of whisky. Compton Mackenzie’s book Whisky Galore is based on this. The Am Politician (Eriskay’s only pub) has some of the artefacts from the ship. Eriskay has its own protected rare breed of wil...

Eriskay has its own protected rare breed of wild ponies. It has its own Love Lilt. Eriskay is also big on hospitality – we were greeted everywhere like old friends. Sadly the weather was not as kind as the islanders, and rain meant less filming was as possible as I would have liked.
Music:
1. Chris Zabriskie Prelude No. 21
2. Robin James-Jones An Eriskay Love Lilt from Telynegion
3. Kevin MacLeod Heartbreaking
4. Christie Cook Si Beag Si Mor from Dia Miath: Celtic Hymns and Tunes
5. Paul Arden-Taylor From the Hebrides: III Hebridean Lilt from Celtic Twilight
6. William Jackson Mist Covered Mountains from Celtic Tranquility

About the Eriskay Pony Breed:
The Island of Eriskay, was quite remote and difficult to access,
which meant that as other breeds were introduced to different parts of Scotland, these small and rugged ponies were kept isolated and stayed very true to their original type. By the 1970's there were only around 20 ponies left. Sometimes confused with another Scottish breed, the Highland Pony, genetic research has shown they are indeed, their very own breed. Average Height is 12.0hh -13.2hh.

Here is the second single from our EP, 'The Library, Vol. 4. It's an arrangement that's been in the library for a few decades now, and it's a total gem. The song is iconic, the harmony is delicious, and our instrumental collaborators are wonderful. The film comes from A Fly on the Wall productions.

Explore the beautiful remote islands of Uist (North and South) and Eriskay in Scotland's Outer Hebrides (also known as the Western Isles). The Outer Hebrides are an archipelago of islands in the north west of Scotland whose culture and landscape has been influenced by remoteness and by their exposure to the extreme weather systems of the North Atlantic. The islands remain a stronghold of Scottish Gaelic language and culture.
In this short video you can enjoy just a few of the sights and sounds of these special islands, including deserted white sand beaches and some examples of the sculpture trail. In addition, you will learn how the islands of Uist and Eriskay featured in the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie.
There are also some very happy doggies at the end of the film! The beaches of Uist are magical for humans and canines alike!

AM Politician on the Isle of Eriskay.
I visit the pub the AM Politician on the Isle of Eriskay and talk about the story behind it. The story involves a ship called the SS Politician and a rescue of its crew by the islanders, and thats only the beginning...
I also give a video tour of the pub and look at some artefacts that were rescued from the SS Politician. Also, 'AM' is Gaelic for 'The' so the name of the pub is actually The Politician.

Why do I do, just as you say Why must I just, give you your way Why do I sigh, why don't I try to forget It must have been, That something lovers call fate Kept me saying: "I have to wait" I saw them all, Just couldn't fall 'til we met It had to be you, it had to be you I wandered around, and finally found The somebody who Could make me be true, And could make me be blue And even be glad, just to be sad Thinking of you Some others I've seen, Might never be mean Might never be cross, Or try to be boss But they wouldn't do For nobody else, gave me a thrill With all your faults, I Love you still It had to be you, wonderful you It had to be you
