English horn concertos appeared about a century later than oboe solo pieces, mostly because until halfway through the 18th century different instruments (the taille de hautbois, vox humana and the oboe da caccia) had the role of the tenor or alto instrument in the oboe family. The modern English horn was developed from the oboe da caccia in the 1720s, probably in Silesia. The earliest known English horn concertos were written in the 1770s, mostly by prominent oboists of the day, such as Giuseppe Ferlendis, Ignaz Malzat (and his non-oboist brother Johann Michael Malzat) and Joseph Lacher. Few of these works have survived. Among the oldest extant English horn concertos are those by Josef Fiala (a period transcription of a piece originally for viola da gamba) and Anton Milling. It is known that Milling's concerti were performed in 1782 by the Italian oboist Giovanni Palestrini.
The cor anglais (UK:/ˌkɔːr ˈɒŋɡleɪ/, US:/ˌkɔːr ɑːŋˈɡleɪ/ or original French:[kɔʁ ɑ̃ɡlɛ]) or English horn in North America, is a double-reedwoodwind instrument in the oboe family. It is approximately one and a half times the length of an oboe.
The cor anglais is a transposing instrument pitched in F, a perfect fifth lower than the oboe (a C instrument). This means that music for the cor anglais is written a perfect fifth higher than the instrument actually sounds. The fingering and playing technique used for the cor anglais are essentially the same as those of the oboe and oboists typically double on the cor anglais when required. The cor anglais normally lacks the lowest B♭ key found on most oboes and so its sounding range stretches from E3 (written B natural) below middle C to C6 two octaves above middle C.
Description and timbre
The pear-shaped bell of the cor anglais gives it a more covered timbre than the oboe, closer in tonal quality to the oboe d'amore. Whereas the oboe is the soprano instrument of the oboe family, the cor anglais is generally regarded as the tenor member of the family, and the oboe d'amore—pitched between the two in the key of A—as the alto member. The cor anglais is perceived to have a more mellow and plaintive tone than the oboe. Its appearance differs from the oboe in that the reed is attached to a slightly bent metal tube called the bocal, or crook, and the bell has a bulbous shape. It is also much longer.
Hamburg Concerto (Hamburgisches Konzert) for solo horn and chamber orchestra with 4 obbligatonatural horns is one of György Ligeti's last works, composed in 1998–99 and revised in 2003.
The work was commissioned by the ZEIT-Foundation, expressing the special wish that it should be associated with the City of Hamburg. It is dedicated to the German horn player Marie Luise Neunecker, who premiered the original six movements with the Asko Ensemble in January 2001 in Hamburg (the place of the premiere being another special wish from the ZEIT-foundation).
The final revision is cast in seven movements:
Praeludium
Signale, Tanz, Choral
Aria, Aksak, Hoketus
Solo, Intermezzo, Mixtur, Kanon
Spectra
Capriccio
Hymnus
György Ligeti wrote about his work:
The name of the work was chosen in analogy to Bach's Brandenburg Concertos (Brandenburgische Konzerte), Ligeti saw the naming as a dedication:

The concerto has a duration of 12 minutes and is composed in seven short connected sections, which Carter described in the program note as "presenting the many different facets of the horn, which are most remarkable and beautiful."
Reviewing the world premiere, Jeremy Eichler of The Boston Globe praised the concerto, writing:
Reviewing the United Kingdom premiere of the work (performed alongside Carter's Cello Concerto and Boston Concerto), Geoffrey Norris of The Daily Telegraph opined, "Both the Cello Concerto (with soloist Anssi Karttunen) and the Horn Concerto (Martin Owen) identified Carter's innate feel for instrumental timbre, his ability to tap, through his characteristic blend of complexity and clarity, the distinctive personality that an instrument possesses." Fiona Maddocks of The Guardian similarly remarked, "these late works confirmed a new brilliance and drama in Carter's musical voice."

Albrecht Mayer – Mozart: Ave verum corpus, K.618 (Arr. Spindler for English Horn, Strings and Organ)
One of the project’s most joyful moments came courtesy of Ave verum corpus, a short motet written for the feast of Corpus Christi in June 1791 just six months before its composer’s death. “Ave verum corpus is one of Mozart’s most famous pieces,” Mayer observes. “I’ve known it for forty-eight years, since I sang it with the Bamberger Symphoniker when I was a second soprano with the Bamberger Domchor, the boys’ choir of Bamberg Cathedral. It’s not even four minutes long but it’s full of the most exquisite lines. In Matthias Spindler’s arrangement for English horn, strings and organ, we have one of the most soothing of all tunes. It’s like a little night music, sung by the baritone voice of the English horn.”
