Parasites Overview
Parasites are microorganisms that live on a living host and derive nutrition them without any benefit to the host. Parasites can also cause harm to the infected host. There are three classes of parasites that cause infections in humans: Protozoa, Helminths, Ectoparasites

How brain parasites change their host's behavior - Jaap de Roode
View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/how-parasites-change-their-host-s-behavior-jaap-de-roode
The biggest challenge in a parasite’s life is to move from one host to another. Intriguingly, many parasites have evolved the ability to manipulate the behavior of their hosts to improve their own survival -- sometimes even by direct brain control. Jaap de Roode details a few parasites that can really mess with the mind.

Every Type of Parasitism Explained
🪱Parasitism is a widespread strategy in nature that comes in many forms and variations. In this video, I explain them all to you while also trying to convey just how complex and strange the world of parasites can be. This is the hardest I’ve ever worked on a video so I sure hope you enjoy it! Oh, also there’s some pretty disturbing footage so be warned.

Why These Parasites Eat Their Hosts To Survive
Parasitoids are a type of parasite that kill their host animals to survive. While it seems gruesome, this type of behavior is important for keeping our ecosystem balanced. If parasitoids didn't destroy their hosts, the population of invasive species like caterpillars would skyrocket.

Terrifying Parasites Inside the Human Body | Tapeworms, Hookworm, Roundworm & More | Dr. Binocs Show
Common Parasites include roundworms, pinworms, hookworms, tapeworms and liver flukes. Roundworms (Ascaris species) are round and long, and the length can reach 20 cm. They have pointed ends and are light brown or pink in colour.
You can get infected by: touching objects or surfaces with worm eggs on them – if someone with worms does not wash their hands. touching soil or swallowing water or food with worm eggs in it – mainly a risk in parts of the world without modern toilets or sewage systems.

https://wn.com/Every_Type_Of_Parasitism_Explained
🪱Parasitism is a widespread strategy in nature that comes in many forms and variations. In this video, I explain them all to you while also trying to convey just how complex and strange the world of parasites can be. This is the hardest I’ve ever worked on a video so I sure hope you enjoy it! Oh, also there’s some pretty disturbing footage so be warned.

Parasitoids are a type of parasite that kill their host animals to survive. While it seems gruesome, this type of behavior is important for keeping our ecosystem balanced. If parasitoids didn't destroy their hosts, the population of invasive species like caterpillars would skyrocket.

Did you know that one in three people have a brain parasite? TEDxUNO speakers Maggie Bartlett and Madalyn McFarland share all about how this came to be, as well as possible solutions.
Maggie Bartlett is a first year Immunology, Pathology and Infectious Disease doctoral student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha Medical Center (UNMC) and was selected as the Chancellor’s Outstanding Incoming Ph.D. Student. She is a UNO alumni with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biotechnology where she was an INBRE scholar.
During her time at UNO, her focus was development and testing of novel Toxoplasma gondii vaccines. Maggie will be the first Ph.D. candidate to pursue her dissertation at the United States Army Medical Research Institute for infectious diseases (USAMRIID) through a new pipeline program with UNMC. Her focus will be host-response immunomics, specifically of the immune repertoire to filoviruses, alpha viruses, and corresponding vaccines.
Madalyn McFarland is a second year master’s degree student in biology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. After earning her bachelor's degree at UNO in biotechnology, she began her thesis work in the laboratory of Dr. Paul Davis, on the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Her work focuses on the development of experimental compounds into novel antiparasitic drug treatments.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
