Wash Me | Psalm 51:1-12 | Pastor Henry F Curtis, IV
August 4, 2024
Scripture Lesson: Psalm 51:1-12
Key Verse: Psalm 51:2
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy steadfast love;
according to thy abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin!
3 For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned,
and done that which is evil in thy sight,
so that thou art justified in thy sentence
and blameless in thy judgment.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
and in sin did my mother conceive me.
6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward being;
therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Henry VI was King of England for 39 years from 1422 to 1461 and then again for six months from October 1470 to April 1471.
Although he’s the 11th Plantagenet to have sat on England’s throne, he’s commonly referred to as a Lancastrian King because it was under his reign that the Wars of the Roses broke out between two separate branches of the royal family stretching back to Edward III.
One the one side the House of Lancaster, descended from Edward III’s son John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster.
On the other the House of York, descended from Edward III’s other son Edmund, the Duke of York.
Henry VI is famous for inheriting the crown of England when he was just 9-months-old and for suffering such severe mental health issues as an adult, the Kingdom toppled around him.
He’s also arguably the only one of our Kings who simultaneously ruled England AND France.
He’s a pivotal monarch - starting his reign when he could barely walk, realising the dream of many previous kings by sitting on the French throne, but then losing it all; his life snuffed out with a blow to the head when he was 49.
On top of that, the chaos of Henry VI’s reign would result in an unexpected turn in English history - just 14 years after his death a distant branch of the royal family would sweep to power and come to dominate the history books …. the Tudors.

Course Hero Literature Instructor Shobha Tharoor Srinivasan provides an in-depth analysis of the plot, characters, symbols, and themes of William Shakespeare's play Henry IV, Part 1.
Download the free study guide and infographic for Henry IV here: https://www.coursehero.com/lit/Henry-VI-Part-1/infographic/
A history play written by William Shakespeare, Henry IV is based on the kingship of Henry Bolingbroke, who was king of England from 1399 to 1413. Timeless themes of honor, father-son relationships, and political order are at the center of this classic work of literature that revolves around King Henry, a nobleman who rose to the throne but is faced with a rebellion; Prince Hal, the heir to the throne who chooses to carouse with a bunch of drunken thieves instead of helping restore order to the kingdom; Falstaff, a self-serving, lazy drunkard who is like a second father to Prince Hal; and Hotspur, the young warrior King Henry IV wishes was really his son and who joins the rebellion after the King insults his honor.
British author William Shakespeare's Henry IV was first published in 1589. Shakespeare is credited with writing at least 37 plays and over 150 sonnets. Throughout his career, Shakespeare and his fellow actors were supported by the patronage of the nation's monarchs—first by Elizabeth I (1533–1603), under whose reign Shakespeare's company was known as The Lord Chamberlain's Men. In 1610 or 1611 Shakespeare retired, moving back to Stratford-upon-Avon. Despite his retirement from London life, the playwright continued to do some writing, contributing to Henry VIII and Two Noble Kinsmen as well as to another play, Cardenio, now lost.
The play Henry IV contains many important themes, including the boy king, as the title character vacillates—almost on a scene-by-scene basis—between acting like a king and acting like a child; church versus state, as conflicts between nobility and the church play an important role in the struggle for power; and might makes right, as characters on both sides of the Hundred Years' War insist that victory in war is a sign of divine favor and moral superiority. The play also contains many important symbols, including the white rose of York and the red rose of Lancaster.

Scripture Lesson: Psalm 51:1-12
Key Verse: Psalm 51:2
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy steadfast love;
according to thy abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward being;
therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Fill[a] me with joy and gladness;
let the bones which thou hast broken rejoice.
9 Hide thy face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and put a new and right[b] spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence,
and take not thy holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of thy salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Henri, King of Navarre was born 1553, the son of Antoine de Bourbon and Jeanne d'Albret. He was a blood as a descendant of Saint-Louis. Baptized under the Catholic religion, he followed a Calvinist education by his mother, and converted to the Reformation. In 1572, in order to reconcile Catholics and Protestants, he married Marguerite de Valois. His gesture fails, and the wedding festivities lead to the massacre of the Protestants (Saint-Barthélemy). In 1584, he became the heir to the throne of France on the death of the Duke of Alençon. He was the leader of the Protestant party during the eighth religious war and approaches Henri III in order to thwart the Catholic League of the Duke of Guise. After the assassination of Henri III, he was the first king of France of the Bourbon dynasty. He converted to Catholicism ("Paris is worth a mass") and was consecrated in Chartres before entering Paris. Having become king, he signed the Edict of Nantes (1598), recognizing the Protestant beliefs and restoring the economy of the kingdom with the help of his minister Sully. While preparing for a war against Spain, he was assassinated on May 14, 1610 by Ravaillac.
