Wrangling fusion energy with AI
In two groundbreaking initiatives, a Princeton-led team of engineers, physicists, and data scientists from the University and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) leveraged artificial intelligence to advance fusion energy research.
In the first case, the team employed AI to predict and preemptively mitigate a specific plasma instability in real time. By training their model on historical experimental data, the researchers demonstrated that it could accurately forecast potential instabilities up to 300 milliseconds before they occurred, allowing for timely intervention.
