An elective monarchy is a monarchy ruled by an elected monarch, in contrast to a hereditary monarchy in which the office is automatically passed down as a family inheritance. The manner of election, the nature of candidate qualifications, and the electors vary from case to case. Historically it is not uncommon for elective monarchies to transform into hereditary ones over time, or for hereditary ones to acquire at least occasional elective aspects.
Evolution
Many, if not most, kingdoms were officially elective historically, though the candidates were typically only from the family of the deceased monarch. Eventually, however, most elected monarchies introduced hereditary succession, guaranteeing that the title and office stayed within the royal family and specifying, more or less precisely, the order of succession.
Today, almost all monarchies are hereditary monarchies in which the monarchs come from one royal family with the office of sovereign being passed from one family member to another upon the death or abdication of the incumbent.

With the death of Queen Elizabeth II you’re going to start hearing a lot of voices arguing that it’s high time we get rid of the monarchy altogether. Although Elizabeth was almost universally beloved, the same can’t really be said for her son, so why not just ditch the institution entirely. The usual justification for monarchy is that, while it may seem a little silly, it’s too hard to get rid of it. Tristin Hopper is here to argue the exact opposite.

Elective Monarchy & Charles's Favorite Habsburgs
I was recently reading about the Holy Roman Empire and discovered that the tHoly Roman Emperor was not initially a hereditary title but was an elected office chosen by seven electors that could pass between the princely Houses of Europe. Yet for the pass few hundred years the title was held by Habsburgs. It seems strange to me that the electors would allow their influence in choosing the Emperor to be extinguished and for so much power to be concentrated in one Royal House. Will Charles please explain how the Holy Roman Emperor became a hereditary title that passed down the Habsburgs line only. A second question I have is Who are Charles' top five Habsburgs and why? As Noah argues, a great deal, including stability and non-partisan concern for the welfare of all citizens. Noah gave this talk in his final year of high-school at the International School of Prague. He has lived in Washington DC and New Jersey in the US, and the Czech Republic throughout high school.
