Elamite is an extinct language spoken by the ancient Elamites. Elamite was the primary language in present-day Iran from 2800 to 550 BC. The last written records in Elamite appear about the time of the conquest of the Persian Empire by Alexander the Great. Elamite has no demonstrable relatives and is usually considered a language isolate. The lack of established relatives is one reason that interpretation of the language is difficult.
Writing system
Elamite cuneiform, adapted from Akkadian cuneiform, was used from ca. 2500 to 331 BC. Elamite cuneiform was largely a syllabary of some 130 glyphs at any one time and retained only a few logograms from Akkadian, but over time, the number of logograms increased.
Two earlier scripts of the area remain undeciphered but plausibly have encoded Elamite:
Proto-Elamite is the oldest known writing system from Iran. It was used during a brief period of time (ca. 3100 – 2900 BC); clay tablets with Proto-Elamite writing have been found at different sites across Iran. It is thought to have developed from early cuneiform (proto-cuneiform) and consists of more than 1,000 signs. It is thought to be largely logographic.

The History of the Elamite Empire
Elam was a region in the Near East corresponding to the modern-day provinces of Ilam and Khuzestan in southern Iran (though it also included part of modern-day southern Iraq) whose civilization spanned thousands of years from c. 3200 - c. 539 BCE. The name comes from the Akkadian and Sumerian words for “highlands” or “high country” while the Elamites referred to their land as Haltami (or Haltamti) which seems to have had the same meaning.
In this episode we follow the rise and fall of one of the earliest and greatest civilizations and cultures in human history.
From their participation in the earliest war in human history to their isolated language and unique art forms, Elam and its people carved out a unique place for themselves in history.

Language family: Language isolate
Elamite, also known as Hatamtite, is an extinct language that was spoken by the ancient Elamites. It was used in present-day southwestern Iran from 2600 BC to 330 BC. Elamite works disappear from the archeological record after Alexander the Great entered Iran. Elamite is generally thought to have no demonstrable relatives and is usually considered a language isolate. The lack of established relatives makes its interpretation difficult.
A sizeable number of Elamite lexemes are known from the trilingual Behistun inscription and numerous other bilingual or trilingual inscriptions of the Achaemenid Empire, in which Elamite was written using Elamite cuneiform (circa 400 BCE), which is fully deciphered. An important dictionary of the Elamite language, the Elamisches Wörterbuch was published in 1987 by W. Hinz and H. Koch. The Linear Elamite script however, one of the scripts used to write the Elamite language circa 2000 BC, has remained elusive until recently.

An important result of this deciphering of the Linear Elamite is that it is also an important step in a possible deciphering of the Proto-Elamite or, better, the names recorded in the Proto-Elamite tablets
.Linear Elamite is the oldest pure phonetic writing system known to history (i.e.completely without any logogrammatic notation). It was deciphered by French researcher, François Desset. The announcement, which was made in 2020 with the first presentation taking place on 23 November 2020, was preceded by several events leading up to this great accomplishment. In 2018, a scientific article was published that analysed nine silver Gunagi vessels with inscriptions in Linear Elamite (Desset, 2018).
The key scientific article about the deciphering will be published in 2021, after all of the necessary proofreading and peer reviewing processes have been concluded.
The Linear Elamite writing system was recording Elamite language, a non-Indo-European language that has been completely isolated over the course of history and requires much more extensive research. It is true that we were already able to partially understand it thanks to cuneiform scripts, which were used in Mesopotamia. Here, however, we are very far away, in southern Iran, in a time period around 2300 - 1900 BCE, therefore we can analyse the story from a point of view that greatly differs from that of their contemporary Mesopotamian plain-dweller neighbours.

From religious tolerance to military expansion the Elamite Empire expanded and forever changed ancient Mesopotamia until it came to clash with the Assyrian Empire and would eventually be conquered, assimilated, independent again and then assimilated again by the great Persian Empire.

OLD PERSIAN is one of the two directly attested Old Iranian languages (the other being Avestan) and is the ancestor of Middle Persian (the language of Sasanian Empire). Like other Old Iranian languages, it was known to its native speakers as ariya (Iranian).

AKKADIAN (BABYLONIAN) is an extinct East Semitic language that was spoken in ancient Mesopotamia (Akkad, Assyria, Isin, Larsa and Babylonia) from the third millennium BC until its gradual replacement by Akkadian-influenced Old Aramaic among Mesopotamians by the 8th century BC.
