Power Outages in Ecuador: The Daily Struggle and What Expats Should Know
In this update, I share the reality of Ecuador’s current power outage crisis and how it’s impacting daily life here. Even major places like the Mall del Pacífico have had to cut hours due to limited generator availability.
For those considering a move to Ecuador, particularly digital nomads or retirees, this situation is something to consider. With maintenance issues and drought-related challenges, there’s uncertainty about when reliable power will return. Additionally, I open up about my personal battle with tinnitus, a recent str...

Ecuador’s youngest mayor, Brigitte Garcia, has died. Garcia was elected mayor of San Vicente in 2023. One of her most recent projects was improving the water supply to the town. Ecuadorian police say two people were found shot to death inside a rented car on March 24. Law enforcement identified them as Garcia and Jairo Loor, the mayor’s communications director. Garcia was 27 years old.

In this update, I share the reality of Ecuador’s current power outage crisis and how it’s impacting daily life here. Power cuts have extended up to 14 hours a day, and the outages aren’t always as scheduled, making planning nearly impossible. While some buildings have generators, many are breaking down, running short on fuel, or are simply too costly to maintain consistently.
Additionally, I open up about my personal battle with tinnitus, a recent struggle that’s added more weight to these challenging times.

Should you visit Ecuador? Due to Ecuador's current energy crisis and planned blackouts, I believe it is not a good time to visit due to Ecuador's energy crisis. In this video I explain the reasons for the energy crisis and why you shouldn't travel to Ecuador including a few reasons why even with the energy crisis you might decide to come to Ecuador.

Ecuador is one of the most diverse countries in the world though it's comparably tiny. Beside the Galapagos Islands (which is the #1 tourist destination in Ecuador) the country has a lot more to offer, therefore I focussed on "La Sierra" in this video which is a paradise for landscape lovers and outdoor adventurers.
Another reason to visit the Andean region is that you have the chance to dive into the local culture and get a real feeling of Ecuador. The places to see in Ecuador I focussed on in this short video are the result of my own travels along the center from north to south and are easily doable in 2 weeks time.
Things to do in Ecuador covered in this video:
01) 00:36 - Otavalo market in Otavalo
02) 01:00 - Hike the Cuicocha lake
03) 01:25 - Middle of the World, Mitad del Mundo & Quitsato in Cayambe
04) 01:48 - Quito, capital & UNESCO World Heritage
05) 02:08 - Termas de Papallacta (hot springs)
06) 02:24 - Cayambe Coca National Park
07) 02:45 - Quilotoa & Shalala viewpoint
08) 03:13 - Tren Crucero & Nariz del Diablo (Devil's nose)
09) 03:47 - Inka ruins in Ingapirca
10) 04:04 - Cuenca & it's beautiful old town
What are your best things to do in Ecuador?
I’m looking forward to more tips from other travelers and Ecuador experts. Have you been and know of some cool places? Let us know in the comments below!

Evolution Documented 2000 Years Before Darwin .What does it say will Evolve? Aliens?
Published on Sep 2, 2014
Let's take a look at ancient Indian sculptures that show the theory of Evolution with remarkable accuracy. By the end of this video, I hope you will agree with me that Evolution was understood and documented 2000 years before Darwin ever came up with the idea.
To understand this, let’s take a look at this structure called Rayar Gopuram in Mahabalipuram. This was built around 7th century A.D, so it is over 1400 years old. The reason why this entire structure was left unfinished is because a sculptor made a simple mistake in carving this pillar. This pillar was carved based on the Hindu concept called Dashavatara and these 10 life forms were first documented in the scripture called Bhagavad Gita written around 500 B.C. At the top, you can see that he carved a figure...

I will never be able to look at bananas the same way again. The history behind this fruit is filled with government coups, propaganda, and predatory corporations.
This is the story of how US imperialism gave us crappy bananas - and why the ones in your kitchen might be doomed.

Guinea pig Breed, Guinea Hog Disambiguation Animal Cavia Porcellis
This article is about the small rodent species. For the domestic pig breed, see Guinea hog. For other uses, see Guinea pig (disambiguation)The guinea pig or domestic guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), also known as cavy or domestic cavy(/ˈkeɪvi/), is a species of rodent belonging to the family Caviidae and the genus Cavia. Despite their common name, guinea pigs are not native to Guinea, nor are they closely biologically related to pigs, and the origin of the name is still unclear. They originated in the Andes of South America, and studies based on biochemistry and hybridization suggest they are domesticated descendants of a closely related species of cavy such as C. tschudii, and therefore do not exist naturally in the wild. They were originally domesticated as livestock, as a source of food, an...

Arrowroot is a perennial plant growing to a height of between 0.3 m (1 ft) and 1.5 m (5 ft). Its leaves are lanceolate. The edible part of the plant is the rhizome. Twin clusters of small white flowers bloom about 90 days after planting. The plant rarely produces seed and reproduction is typically by planting part of a rhizome with a bud. Rhizomes are ready for harvesting 10–12 months after planting as leaves of the plant begin to wilt and die. The rhizomes are fleshy, cylindrical, and grow from 20 cm (8 in) to 45 cm (18 in) long.
The arrowroot plant probably originated in the Amazon rainforest of north-western Brazil and neighboring countries. It grows best between temperatures of 23 °C (73 °F) and 29 °C (84 °F) with annual precipitation between 150 cm (59 in) and 200 cm (79 in). The dormant rhizomes can withstand temperatures as low as 5 °C (41 °F).
In the continental United States, arrowroot is cultivated as an outside plant only in southern Florida.
Distribution
Maranta arundinacea is native to Mexico, Central America, the West Indies (Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Lesser Antilles) and South America (Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana).[2] It is widely cultivated in the many warm countries and is considered naturalized in Jamaica, Bahamas, Bermuda, the Netherlands Antilles, India, Sri Lanka, China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Yunnan), Taiwan, Volcano Islands, Mauritius, Réunion, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Florida, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines.[6][7]
The Caribbean island nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is the world's largest grower of arrowroot and producer of arrowroot flour.[8] In Kerala, India, arrowroot, locally called bilathi koova, is cultivated to produce an easily digestible starch.[9]
Prehistoric domestication
Radio-carbon dating has established that M. arundinacea was one of the first plants domesticated in prehistoric South America. Arrowroot, along with leren (Calathea allouia), squash (Cucurbita moschata), and bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) became cultivated plants in northern South American and Panama between 8200 BC and 5600 BC.[10] Some archaeologists believe that arrowroot was first used by Native Americans not as food but as a poultice to extract poison from wounds caused by spears or arrows.[11]
Evidence of the use of arrowroot as food has been found dating from 8200 BC at the San Isidro archaeological site in the upper Cauca River valley of Colombia near the city of Popayán. Starch grains from arrowroot were found on grinding tools. It is unclear whether the arrowroot had been gathered or grown, although the elevation of the site of 1,700 metres (5,600 ft) is probably outside the normal range of elevations at wh

The Amazon rainforest, Amazon jungle[a] or Amazonia is a moist broadleaf tropical rainforest in the Amazon biome that covers most of the Amazon basin of South America. This basin encompasses 7,000,000 km2 (2,700,000 sq mi), of which 5,500,000 km2 (2,100,000 sq mi) are covered by the rainforest. This region includes territory belonging to nine nations and 3,344 formally acknowledged indigenous territories.
The majority of the forest is contained within Brazil, with 60% of the rainforest, followed by Peru with 13%, Colombia with 10%, and with minor amounts in Bolivia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. Four nations have “Amazonas” as the name of one of their first-level administrative regions, and France uses the name "Guiana Amazonian Park” for its rainforest protected area. The Amazon represents over half of the planet's remaining rainforests,[2] and comprises the largest and most biodiverse tract of tropical rainforest in the world, with an estimated 390 billion individual trees divided into 16,000 species.[3]
More than 30 million people of 350 different ethnic groups live in the Amazon, which are subdivided into 9 different national political systems and 3,344 formally acknowledged indigenous territories. Indigenous peoples make up 9% of the total population, with 60 of the groups remaining largely isolated.[4]

In the Amazonas, there has been fighting and wars between the neighbouring tribes of the Jivaro. Several tribes of the Jivaroan group, including the Shear, practised headhunting for trophies and head shrinking.[6] The accounts of missionaries to the area in the borderlands between Brazil and Venezuela have recounted constant infighting in the Yanomamö tribes. More than a third of the Yanomamö males, on average, died from warfare.[7]
During the Amazon rubber boom it is estimated that diseases brought by immigrants, such as typhus and malaria, killed 40,000 native Amazonians.[8]
Location
Nine countries share the Amazon basin—most of the rainforest, 58.4%, is contained within the borders of Brazil. The other eight countries include Peru with 12.8%, Bolivia with 7.7%, Colombia with 7.1%, Venezuela with 6.1%, Guyana with 3.1%, Suriname with 2.5%, French Guiana with 1.4%, and Ecuador with 1%.[9]

The rainforest likely formed during the Eocene era (from 56 million years to 33.9 million years ago). It appeared following a global reduction of tropical temperatures when the
Atlantic Ocean had widened sufficiently to provide a warm, moist climate to the Amazon basin. The rainforest has been in existence for at least 55 million years, and most of the region remained free of savanna-type biomes at least until the current ice age when the climate was drier and savanna more widespread.[10][11]
Following the Cretaceous–Palaeogene extinction event, the extinction of the dinosaurs and the wetter climate may have allowed the tropical rainforest to spread out across the continent. From 66 to 34 MYA, the rainforest extended as far south as 45°. Climate fluctuations during the last 34 million years have allowed savanna regions to expand into the tropics. During the Oligocene, for example, the rainforest spanned a relatively narrowband. It expanded again during the Middle Miocene, then retracted to a mostly inland formation at the last glacial maximum.[12] However, the rainforest still managed to thrive during these glacial periods, allowing for the survival and evolution of a broad diversity of species.[13]
Aerial view of the Amazon rainforest
During the mid-Eocene, it is believed that the drainage basin of the Amazon was split along the middle of the continent by the Gurus Arch. Water on the eastern side flowed toward the Atlantic, while to the west water flowed toward the Pacific across the Amazonas Basin. As the Andes Mountains rose, however, a large basin was created that enclosed a lake; now known as the Slimes Basin.

At the top, you can see that he carved a figure with a farmer’s plough below a figure carved with a bow and arrow but it should have been the other way around. This mistake was so serious, that the sculptors stopped carving and abandoned the entire structure. Why was the order of these figures so important? I mean, these are all Gods so how does the order of their appearance matter so much that the ancient Hindus could abandon years of work put into this amazing structure? If we study this pillar carefully, we can understand why the order of these figures matter so much. It matters because it shows evolution with incredible accuracy.
1. The first figure shows a Fish, which dominated the planet 535 Million years ago. This is called Matsya in India, and in modern Evolution theory, fishes are regarded as the first large animals that swarmed all over the planet. In some Indian temples, this form is shown simply as a fish and some carvings even show fish evolving into other creatures. For example, in this sculpture in Bhitargaon Temple, you'll see that the fins are changing into legs and the mouth is evolving into a different shape.
2. The second figure shows a turtle called Kurma in Sanskrit, and signifies that aquatic animals evolved into amphibians. This is confirmed by Darwin, who shows that animals from the sea became amphibians and were capable of living in both land and water. Again, in many Hindu temples, you can see the turtle carved completely as a turtle. In this sculpture, you can see how a turtle emerges out of water while surrounded by other fishes.
3. The third figure is called Varaha, which shows the emergence of rodents and wild boars. Note that we have now entered the age of mammals, because all Rodents are mammals. Also, it is interesting to realize that we are looking at animals that completely live in land, and not water anymore. This is also confirmed by modern evolution theory.
4. The fourth figure called Narasimha, shows a very large lion which is the Smilodon or a similar species which is now extinct. Paleontologists agree that these big cats dominated the planet and hunted mammoths and other giant animals. Incredibly, this scene is accurately portrayed in this 12th century sculpture which shows a lion as big as the elephant itself. In other temples, Narasimha is shown as Half Lion and Half man, which shows a hybrid, hominid like creature.
5. The fifth figure shows Vamana, who is always portrayed as a dwarf. Now, we know that the Neanderthals were never more than 5 feet tall. Other early human like species like Homo floresiensis were only three and a half feet tall. Notice how Vamana is portrayed with tools, but not any weapons. This indicates how the Neanderthals and other human like species were starting to make use of objects like sticks and stones to survive.

The 2002 FIFA World Cup was the 17th FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial world championship for men's national football teams organized by FIFA. It was held from 31 May to 30 June 2002 at sites in South Korea and Japan, with its final match hosted by Japan at International Stadium in Yokohama.
A field of 32 teams qualified for this World Cup, which was the first to be held in Asia, the first to be held outside of the Americas or Europe, as well as the first to be jointly-hosted by more than one nation. China, Ecuador, Senegal, and Slovenia made their World Cup debuts.
The tournament had several upsets and surprise results, which included the defending champions France being eliminated in the group stage after earning a single point and second favourites Argentina also being eliminated in the group stage. South Korea managed to reach the semi-finals, thus becoming the first and only team from outside Europe and the Americas to reach the last four of a World Cup. However, the most potent team at the tournament, Brazil, prevailed, winning the final against Germany 2–0, making them the first and only country to have won the World Cup five times.[1] The victory qualified Brazil for the 2003 and subsequently 2005 FIFA Confederations Cups, its fourth and fifth Confederations Cup appearance in a row. In the third place play-off match against South Korea, Turkey won 3–2, taking third place in only their second ever FIFA World Cup, and scored the fastest goal in the FIFA World Cup history (10.8 seconds after kick-off).[2]

The Amazon rainforest, alternatively, the Amazon jungle[a] or Amazonia, is a moist broadleaf tropical rainforest in the Amazon biome that covers most of the Amazon basin of South America.
Four nations have "Amazonas" as the name of one of their first-level administrative regions, and France uses the name "Guiana Amazonian Park" for its rainforest protected area. The Amazon represents over half of the planet's remaining rainforests,[2] and comprises the largest and most biodiverse tract of tropical rainforest in the world, with an estimated 390 billion individual trees divided into 16,000 species.
More than 30 million people of 350 different ethnic groups live in the Amazon, which are subdivided into 9 different national political systems and 3,344 formally acknowledged indigenous territories. Indigenous peoples make up 9% of the total population with 60 of the groups remaining largely isolated

I will never be able to look at bananas the same way again. The history behind this fruit is filled with government coups, propaganda, and predatory corporations.
This is the story of how US imperialism gave us crappy bananas - and why the ones in your kitchen might be doomed.

Genus: Prunus
Subgenus: Amygdalus
Species: P. persica
Binomial name
Prunus persica
(L.) Batsch 1801 not Stokes 1812 nor (L.) Siebold & Zucc. 1845[1]
Synonyms[2]
Synonymy[show]
The peach (Prunus persica) is a deciduous tree native to the region of Northwest China between the Tarim Basin and the north slopes of the Kunlun Shan mountains, where it was first domesticated and cultivated.[3] It bears an edible juicy fruit called a peach or a nectarine.
The specific epithet persica refers to its widespread cultivation in Persia (modern-day Iran), whence it was transplanted to Europe. It belongs to the genus Prunus which includes the cherry, apricot, almond and plum, in the rose family. The peach is classified with the almond in the subgenus Amygdalus, distinguished from the other subgenera by the corrugated seed shell.
Peach and nectarines are the same species, even though they are regarded commercially as different fruits. In contrast to peaches, whose fruits present the characteristic fuzz on the skin, nectarines are characterized by the absence of fruit-skin trichomes (fuzz-less fruit); genetic studies suggest nectarines are produced due to a recessive allele, whereas peaches are produced from a dominant allele for fuzzy skin
Prunus persica grows to 4–10 m (13–33 ft) tall and 6 in. in diameter. The leaves are lanceolate, 7–16 cm (2.8–6.3 in) long, 2–3 cm (0.79–1.18 in) broad, pinnately veined. The flowers are produced in early spring before the leaves; they are solitary or paired, 2.5–3 cm diameter, pink, with five petals. The fruit has yellow or whitish flesh, a delicate aroma, and a skin that is either velvety (peaches) or smooth (nectarines) in different cultivars. The flesh is very delicate and easily bruised in some cultivars, but is fairly firm in some commercial varieties, especially when green. The single, large seed is red-brown, oval shaped, approximately 1.3–2 cm long, and is surrounded by a wood-like husk. Peaches, along with cherries, plums and apricots, are stone fruits (drupes). There are various heirloom varieties, including the Indian Peach, or Indian Blood Peach, which arrives in the latter part of the summer, and can have color ranging from red and white, to purple.[6]
Cultivated peaches are divided into clingstones and freestones, depending on whether the flesh sticks to the stone or not; both can have either white or yellow flesh. Peaches with white flesh typically are very sweet with little acidity, while yellow-fleshed peaches typically have an acidic tang coupled with sweetness, though this also varies greatly. Both colors often have some red on their skin. Low-acid white-fleshed peaches are the most popular kinds in China, Japan, and neighbouring Asian countries, while Europeans and North Americans have historically favoured the acidic, yellow-fleshed cultivars.
Peaches grow in a fairly limited range in dry, continental or temperate climates, since the trees have a chilling requirement that tropical or subtropical areas generally cannot satisfy except at high altitudes (for example in parts of Ecuador, Colombia, Ethiopia, India, and Nepal). Most cultivars require 500 hours of chilling around 0 to 10 °C (32 to 50 °F). During the chilling period, key chemical reactions occur, but the plant appears dormant. Once the chilling period is fulfilled, the plant enters a second type of dormancy, the quiescence period. During quiescence, buds break and grow when sufficient warm weather favorable to growth is accumulated.[19]
The trees themselves can usually tolerate temperatures to around −26 to −30 °C (−15 to −22 °F), although the following season's flower buds are usually killed at these temperatures, preventing a crop that summer. Flower bud death begins to occur between −15 and −25 °C (5 and −13 °F), depending on the cultivar and on the timing of the cold, with the buds becoming less cold tolerant in late winter.[20]
Another climate constraint is spring frost. The trees flower fairly early (in March in western Europe) and the blossom is damaged or killed if temperatures drop below about −4 °C (25 °F). However, if the flowers are not fully open, they can tolerate a few degrees colder.

They were originally domesticated as livestock, as a source of food, and continue to be.

I started a company called CrunchLabs where we build a toy together and then I teach you all the juicy physics for how it works. So if you want to learn to think like an engineer and have really fun time doing it, check out the current promotion where you get 2 FREE boxes at https://crunchlabs.com
You should also go subscribe to the CrunchLabs YouTube channel cause we’ve got some bangers in the pipeline- https://www.youtube.com/crunchlabs
