Imagining economic democracy: Peter Tatchell at TEDxEastEnd
Peter Tatchell was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1952 and has been campaigning since 1967 on issues of human rights, democracy, civil liberties, LGBT equality and global justice. His human rights inspirations include Mahatma Gandhi, Sylvia Pankhurst and Martin Luther King.
In 2009, he co-proposed a UN Global Human Rights Index, to measure and rank the human rights record of every country - with the aim of creating a human rights league table to highlight the best and worst countries and thereby incentivise governments to clean up their record and improve their human rights ranking.
He coordinated the Equal Love campaign from 2010, in a bid to challenge the UK's twin legal bans on same-sex civil marriages and opposite-sex civil partnerships. The following year, he organised four gay co...

The west historically have been dominating the global economy. With the rise of China and Asia, how would the world change with the new center of economy being a non Western and European focus.
Danny Quah is Professor of Economics and International Development at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Director of the Southeast Asia Centre at LSE’s new Institute of Global Affairs. He had previously served as LSE’s Head of Department for Economics and Council Member on Malaysia’s National Economic Advisory Council.
Quah is Tan Chin Tuan Visiting Professor at the National University of Singapore, and lectures regularly at Peking University. He studied at Princeton, Minnesota, and Harvard, and was Assistant Professor in the Economics Department at MIT before joining LSE.

We will now look at how democratically controlled companies differ from ‘normal’ businesses. There are three key elements to economic democracy,
1. The rights to information about the company
2. The right to take part in decisions about the business and the ability to vote out leaders
3. The right to a share in the wealth generated by everyone in the company.
SUMA
Based in Yorkshire, England, this food wholesale and distribution worker cooperative is entirely employee owned. In 2016 it celebrated 40 years of trading. All staff (known as members) receive the same pay, and profits are distributed on a ‘pro-rata’ basis. While they do use an elected management committee to implement decisions, the decisions themselves are made at quarterly general meetings...

PROUT's Concept of Economic Democracy
"People will have to opt for either political democracy or economic democracy. That is, they will have to choose a socio-economic system based on either a centralized economy or a decentralized economy. The minimum requirements of life and increasing purchasing power must be guaranteed to all, the power to make all economic decisions must be placed in the hands of the local people, and outsiders must be strictly prevented from interfering in the local economy -- all this for the universal well being of all, including plants and animals." - P.R. Woollard & Henry
Operating originally in the paper industry, Woollard & Henry became employee owned in 2002 after the company was faced with closure. 100% of the company is now owned by employees. While the company has a traditional management structure, two (elected) employee directors sit on the board, and there are regular meetings of the workforce to discuss the business.
John Lewis Partnership
The John Lewis Partnership is a UK-wide retail and supermarket chain entirely owned by its employees (known as ‘Partners’). The company was not established as employee owned, but in 1929 ownership was transferred into a trust for employees. The principal aim of the John Lewis Partnership was then, and remains, “the happiness of all its members”. The company operates a traditional management structure and alongside this is a democratic governance structure made up of elected staff representatives.
