Language and Cultural Contact in the Third Millennium BCE: The Case of Ebla
From almost the earliest attestations of writing, there is evidence for languages in contact. In Mesopotamia, for example, we have evidence for Sumerian and Akkadian contact from the early third millennium BCE. It is very difficult, however, to determine the extent and duration of such contact in languages that are no longer spoken. In the case of the Ancient Near East sources do not commonly tell us what language(s) individuals spoke or if the language they wrote represents the language also used for oral communication. This lecture draws attention to the difficulties involved in determining the linguistic situation “on the ground” by us...

The Creation (The Eblaite Creation Hymn)
Yet another creation story, this one being a really old one from the city of Ebla. It is a creation hymn, found on a clay tablet, and is addressed to El. It's a really short one, but I find it very beautiful.
I will have one more Canaanite creation myth (the Sidonian one) to upload before I move onto some more myths, especially a Canaanite flood myth (which itself was adapted from the earlier Sumerian one, a lot like these creation stories).

The Forgotten Ancient Kingdom of Ebla
Spectacular things were happening in Mesopotamia in the period we call the Early Bronze Age, particularly in the southern part of it, commonly called Babylonia. It was here that the wealthy, sophisticated Sumerian civilization developed, its growth and prosperity greatly spurred by the invention of writing. A magnificent assortment of beautifully wrought items, like those unearthed from the so-called royal tombs of Ur and now on display in the British Museum, testifies to the high level of craftsmanship of the Sumerian civilization at its zenith.
In the wake of the Sumerian Early Dynastic period ( 2900–2334 BC), there arose in southern Mesopotamia the first great empire in Near Eastern history—the Akkadian empire ( 2334–2193 BC) founded by Sargon, which at its peak extended through the wh...

This lecture draws attention to the difficulties involved in determining the linguistic situation “on the ground” by using the example of Eblaite, an idiom attested in the 24th century BCE in the ancient northern Syrian site of Ebla (Tell Mardikh).

ELAMITE
Native to: Elamite Empire
Region: Western Asia, Iran
Era: c. 2800–300 BC
Language family: Language isolate
Elamite, also known as Hatamtite, is an extinct language that was spoken by the ancient Elamites. It was used in present-day southwestern Iran from 2600 BC to 330 BC. Elamite works disappear from the archeological record after
Alexander the Great entered Iran. Elamite is generally thought to have no demonstrable relatives and is usually considered a language isolate. The lack of established relatives makes its interpretation difficult.
A sizeable number of Elamite lexemes are known from the trilingual Behistun inscription and numerous other bilingual or trilingual inscriptions of the Achaemenid Empire, in which Elamite was written using Elamite cuneiform (circa 400 BCE), which is fully deciphered. An important dictionary of the Elamite language, the Elamisches Wörterbuch was published in 1987 by W. Hinz and H. Koch. The Linear Elamite script however, one of the scripts used to write the Elamite language circa 2000 BC, has remained elusive until recently.

In the wake of the Sumerian Early Dynastic period ( 2900–2334 BC), there arose in southern Mesopotamia the first great empire in Near Eastern history—the Akkadian empire ( 2334–2193 BC) founded by Sargon, which at its peak extended through the whole of Mesopotamia, and north-westwards into south-eastern Anatolia. Early Bronze Age Mesopotamia’s archaeological remains and prolific tablet-finds provided rich and exciting fields of investigation for archaeologists, historians, and linguists alike.
But across the Euphrates in Syria, the picture was much bleaker, so it seemed, if you happened to be any of these. Up until the 1960s, third millennium Syria was generally thought of as no more than ‘an illiterate backwater of small communities far removed from the great developments of civilization occurring in Mesopotamia and Egypt’. But there must have been more to it than this! And indeed, it was quite possible that the numerous unexplored mounds (tells) throughout the region did include remains of settlements of various kinds contemporary with the first great civilizations of Mesopotamia.
