BEST IN TRAVEL 2023: NEW MEXICO
Learn why New Mexico is called the "Land of Enchantment." Is it because of the state's thousand-year-old pueblos where Native Americans still live in today? Or the fiery-red deserts that you can cross on horseback or by hot air balloon? Or perhaps, is it because of the modern and contemporary art scene that New Mexico's capital Santa Fe is world-famous for? Native American hoop dancer ShanDien LaRance shows us her top places to go and things to do while introducing us to the native land and culture of her home state.

Why So Many Americans Move To Arizona And Not New Mexico

Everyone is moving to Arizona... or so it seems. The Copper State has grown a huge amount over the last 50 years as Americans flee cold, harsh winters from the north, and the expensiveness of California in the west. But while Arizona has had incredibly growth, New Mexico simply hasn't, at least not relative to its neighbor. Which is a little odd because, from the outside, the two states seem very similar. But there's actual geographic reasons why Arizona has grown so much faster than New Mexico, which used to be the larger of the two states.

New Mexico isn’t JUST amazing food. It’s really pretty out there, too. A quarter of New Mexico is forested, which you probably didn’t know. But it’s a lot more than that. The terrain’s pretty diverse. There’s large mountain ranges and barren deserts and beautiful plains and even caves!
It’s actually the 5th largest state by size, but only 35th in population, and there’s only 17 people per square mile. So there’s a lot of space. Which is good in today’s America.
As we’ll see it’s a very misunderstood state and one with a lot of state pride. There are all sorts of various regions of interest, some of which are super culturally rich. Others are vast and isolated. Many are plain rundown, but more on that later, too. To really get to know New Mexico, we have to see all the different areas one by one, and then we can understand this state a lot more.

Jeep parts purchased through this Amazon link will help support this channel and at no cost to you: https://www.amazon.com/shop/wayalife
Just east of Albuquerque and near the village of Tijeras, New Mexico, there lies a length of Route 66 that has a series of grooves cut into it (also known as a rumble strip) and if you drive over them at exactly 45 MPH, the sound of your vibrating tires will play a portion of "America the Beautiful"! Apparently, this was a project that the National Geographic Society worked on in conjunction with the New Mexico Department of Transportation for a series they were doing called "Crowd Control" and the purpose of it was to develop a way to encourage drivers to slow down. In this short video, you'll get to see Cind...

The Singing Road of New Mexico - Rt 66 Sings America the Beautiful
http://www.thesingingroad.com introduces the newest of only two singing roads in the USA! Built by National Geographic as a part of their new Nat-Geo TV show "Crowd Control", a short section of Route 66 has specially designed rumble strips that turn the Mother Road into a record and your car into a phonograph, of sorts. Just a few miles east of Four Hills. Enjoy driving safely in New Mexico!

Route 66 Through New Mexico
We are taking an RV cross country road trip adventure for the first time, from California to Key West and back.
We are heading back west and taking Route 66, a drive I have wanted to do for a long time. My original dream was to drive our old Nash Rambler the entire route, but this opportunity came up and I'm pretty sure this was the better way of doing it.
Most of the time we drove Interstate 40, taking exits to see the remains of Route 66 based on a list I had made.
Our stops were:
00:00 Intro
00:14 Tucumcari New Mexico - Vintage Motels
03:34 Route 66 Auto Museum, Santa Rosa
05:07 Whiting Bros. Moriarty
05:39 Musical Highway

07:54 Old Town Albuquerque

Route 66 New Mexico - (almost) every town along the way - 48 of them!
New Mexico is the 6th state on Route 66 as you go from Chicago to Santa Monica, and it's possibly the most unique! Various mountains and wide open landscapes start to dominate the drive as well as a lot of Native American culture. I really enjoyed exploring this often forgotten part of our country!

ROUTE 66 HAPPY BURGER
Follow John on 2nd stop of the Freakmore Paranormal Route 66, 6 Months tour of Oklahoma. This episode John travels to Sapulpa, Oklahoma at the iconic Happy Burger.
Happy Burger was originally built as a Tastee Freez in 1957. Starting in 1974 the owner Jim Summers, changed the name of the business to Happy Burger and a local favorite was born. In 2002 Peggy Eaton purchased the business and has run it successfully with her family ever since. Happy Burger's mission is to serve fresh high-quality food to every customer.
Sidle up to the lunch counter and order an old fashion burger and hand cut fries from this business that has been feeding Route 66 travelers since 1957. Tiny diner is tinged with nostalgia and is home to a big collection of Pepsi memorabilia.

Just east of Albuquerque and near the village of Tijeras, New Mexico, there lies a length of Route 66 that has a series of grooves cut into it (also known as a rumble strip) and if you drive over them at exactly 45 MPH, the sound of your vibrating tires will play a portion of "
America the Beautiful"! Apparently, this was a project that the National Geographic Society worked on in conjunction with the New Mexico Department of Transportation for a series they were doing called "Crowd Control" and the purpose of it was to develop a way to encourage drivers to slow down. In this short video, you'll get to see Cindy and I drive over this Musical Road in our Jeep Renegade and you'll get to hear the tune being played.

06:37 Enchanted Trails RV, Albuquerque
07:54 Old Town Albuquerque
12:11 Route 66 Albuquerque
15:03 Rio Puerco Bridge, Albuquerque
15:45 Acoma Curio, San Fidel
16:16 Whiting Bros. signs
16:49 Continental Divide
17:17 Gallup New Mexico
My favorite stop on this leg of Route 66 was Tucumcari especially the Blue Swallow Motel. I also really like the beauty of Old Town Albuquerque, but maybe because of the time we were there it had a strange vibe.
We are continuing on Route 66 next time through Arizona and have a detour planned for Sedona, hopefully we will see you then.
*The answer to what song the Musical Road plays or played:
America The Beautiful
America! America! (Missing from road)
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

New Mexico is the 6th state on Route 66 as you go from Chicago to Santa Monica, and it's possibly the most unique! Various mountains and wide open landscapes start to dominate the drive as well as a lot of Native American culture. I really enjoyed exploring this often forgotten part of our country!

Join John as he stops at the most iconic Route 66 stops in Oklahoma, from the far Northeastern parts of Oklahoma to the far western edges near the Texas and Oklahoma State Line.
