How 6 Million Pounds Of Electronic Waste Gets Recycled A Month | Big Business
Only 17% of electronic waste is recycled. That’s because devices aren’t designed to be recycled. They’re full of tiny, toxic materials that are hard and expensive to break down. But if extracted safely, those materials could mean big money for e-recyclers like Sims Lifecycle Services. We visit Sims’ Tennessee recycling facility to find out why e-waste is getting harder to deal with.

Recycling e-waste - Good for business and the environment | DW Documentary
One way to tackle e-waste is to repair devices rather than throw them out. More companies are doing just that, from recycling solar modules to renting out second-hand smartphones. Their goal is to reduce e-waste and protect the environment.
Experts predict that by 2030, more than one million tons of solar modules will end up as waste in Germany alone. With his company 2ndlifesolar in Hamburg, engineer Martin Wilke wants to ensure that as many of these discarded modules as possible are recycled, for example as a small-scale solar panel system on a balcony. The company also recycles the raw materials in the discarded modules, such as silver and silicon.
And in the French city of Strasbourg, Elie Assémat is working to eliminate e-waste altogether. He’s the co-founder of the cooperative Com...

The dark side of electronic waste recycling
Electronic waste is a hazardous and difficult form of garbage to manage. Though a lot of e-waste can be recycled responsibly, many e-waste processors choose instead to ship it overseas for junkyards in poorer nations to deal with. Remarkably, exporting e-waste is perfectly legal in the US...but thanks to a scrappy nonprofit watchdog, some unscrupulous exporters are still going to jail.

The tragic costs of e-waste
According to the U.N., about 50 million tons of electronic waste (or e-waste) are produced every year, the vast majority of which winds up strewn in landfills in the global South, where people sift through the electronic debris in search of valuable metals. Correspondent Seth Doane looks at the tragic costs that occur when consumer products reach their end-of-life, and examines efforts to ramp up formal recycling and extending the life of products like smartphones.

Wasted: 50 million tonnes of e-waste every year
UNEP’s Beat Waste Pollution Video series aims at expose how our consumption patterns are leading to increasing amounts of waste.
Electrical and electronic equipment - such as computers, televisions, smartphones - have become an essential part of everyday life. Their availability and widespread use have enabled much of the global population to benefit from higher standards of living.
Because of the slow adoption of collection and recycling, externalities –such as the consumption of resources, the emission of greenhouse gases, and the release of toxic substances during informal recycling procedures– illustrate the problem to remain within sustainable limits.
Consequently, many countries are challenged by the considerable environmental and human health risks of inadequately managed Wast...

And in the French city of Strasbourg, Elie Assémat is working to eliminate e-waste altogether. He’s the co-founder of the cooperative Commown, which has been renting out smartphones, computers, and headphones since 2018. Assémat is primarily concerned with sustainability and promoting product longevity.
India, meanwhile, has become a dumping ground for e-waste from all over the world, including illegal waste from Europe. Tens of thousands of people make a living from processing and reselling e-waste under dangerous working conditions. Swiss environmental scientist Dea Wehrli wants to tackle the problem with a project called E(co)work. It allows Indian scrap metal workers to rent a work or storage space that is safe and in line with regulations.

Consequently, many countries are challenged by the considerable environmental and human health risks of inadequately managed Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), widely known as e-waste.
Even countries with a formal e-waste management system in place are confronted with relatively low collection and recycling rates. As a result, the total value of all this discarded as e-waste in 2019 has been conservatively valued at US$57 billion – a sum greater than the GDP of most countries.
More than 44 million tonnes of electronic and electrical waste was produced globally in 2017 – over six kilograms for every person on the planet. This is equivalent in weight to all the commercial aircraft ever built. Learn more:
