The Historic Town of DUMFRIES - Is It Worth A Visit? - Scotland Walking Tour | 4K | 60FPS
Dumfries is a market town and former royal burgh in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, near the mouth of the River Nith on the Solway Firth, 25 miles (40 km) from the Anglo-Scottish border. Dumfries is the county town of the historic county of Dumfriesshire.[3]
Before becoming King of Scots, Robert the Bruce killed his rival the Red Comyn at Greyfriars Kirk in the town in 1306. The Young Pretender had his headquarters here towards the end of 1745. In the Second World War, the Norwegian Army in exile in Britain largely consisted of a brigade in Dumfries.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

My road trip around the South West Coastal 300 began in Dumfries 6 days ago and will now end with a more in depth tour of the town nicknamed Scotland’s Queen of the South. I’ll start with a room tour at my hotel The Aberdour on Newall Terrace. Dumfries is a pretty market town with the beautiful River Nith weaving through it.
I started in the High Street where I visited the historical Midsteeple Buildingand then made my way across to Robert Burns House - the place where Scotland’s National Poet lived and died. Opposite is a well maintained memorial garden with paintings, words from some of his poems and a well kept garden. Across the street is St Michael’s and South Parish Church where I came across the final resting place of Robert Burns - the Burns Mausoleum. In the corner of the graveyard I also found his original burial place.
After soaking in a lot of history throughout the morning I crossed the river and walked through a local park alongside the River Nith - the scenery was striking and it was terrific how the blue sky interacted with the old buildings and water - the whole place lit up! I headed back across the river via the Devorgilla Bridge (Old Bridge) which is a 15th century pedestrian bridge perfect for admiring the spires of the old buildings and keeping an eye out for wildlife in the river. This has to be my favourite location in Dumfries.
I spotted the Robert Burns Statue standing in front of the imposing St Bride's Anglican Church, passed Dumfries Academy and learnt a little bit about the author of Peter Pan JM Barrie as I admired Moat Brae and the National Centre for Children's Literature and Storytelling. I had no idea that Peter Pan had a connection with this southern Scottish town but now I do!
What a perfect day for exploring Dumfries and how incredible to round off my week long road trip around South West Scotland than to enjoy some time in the place where the route begins and ends. What an adventure!
