Luxembourg's Grand Duke has abdicated in favour of his eldest son.
Crown Prince Henri, was sworn in as Luxembourg's new monarch when his father, Grand Duke Jean, stepped down after 36 years at an abdication ceremony attended by royals from Belgium and the Netherlands.
Henri pledged allegiance in the parliament, next door to the grand ducal palace - a Disneyesque affair of turrets and wrought-iron that dominates the picturesque city center with its narrow cobblestoned streets, squares and alleys.
Afterwards, he and his Cuban-born wife, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, strolled from the parliament, around the block - waving to spectators and shaking outstretched hands - before heading back to palace for a balcony appearance.

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola on Tuesday visited Luxembourg, saying the country must play its part in the EU’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Metsola on Tuesday met with Grand Duke Henri, prime minister Xavier Bettel (DP) and foreign affairs minister Jean Asselborn (LSAP), as well as speaking at the Chamber of Deputies during an official state visit.
#Henri #Duke #Metsola #Luxembourg #Palace
“Luxembourg has always played a leading part in championing European integration and European democracy,” Metsola said, from the grand duchy’s role in founding the European Coal and Steel Community to the signing of the Schengen agreement and beyond.
“You and your citizens believe in Europe,” the president said. Speaking 20 days into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, she said Luxembourg’s “homes and hearts have been opened to people fleeing war.”
As Europe in the aftermath of WW2 pooled together precious coal and steel resources, Metsola said it is now time to rethink our resources once again and wean the EU off Russian gas, which she said funds bombs “raining down on Ukraine.”
The EU must become more self-reliant, she said, not only on energy but also food security, as well as building a stronger security and defence union. “The threat that we face are real,” Metsola said.
The European Parliament president called for bold and ambitious solutions to the crisis, adding that the EU has already passed unprecedented sanctions packages and stands united with Ukraine. “We are only as big as our ideas.”
Metsola said more aid needs to be channelled to Ukraine and support to countries that have welcomed refugees. But the president also warned that Poland and Hungary would not be exempt from rule of law obligations over their support for fleeing Ukraine.
Rule of law
Poland has taken in around 1.7 million people, with more than 255,000 received in Hungary. Both countries, however, face EU sanctions for refusing to take in refugees as part of a 2015 mechanism aimed at relocating 120,000 refugees over a period of two years.
Both countries had launched a legal challenge against a rule-of-law mechanism that give the European Commission the power to withhold funds for rule of law violations. The European Court of Justice in February dismissed the case, but the EU could now hold back off on blocking Poland and Hungary’s budget as they provide support for refugees from Ukraine.
Still, Metsola said that curbs on press freedom, LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights and other rule of law violations wouldn’t be annulled by the country’s humanitarian response to the war in Ukraine.
“We thought ourselves secure in peace. Putin’s invasion has shattered peace in Europe,” she said. “Europeans are experiencing crimes of war,” Metsola said, calling the shelling of a maternity ward and children’s hospital in the eastern city of Mariupol “an act of pure evil.”
She said the EU stands with the people of Ukraine, who have a future in the bloc, but also with those in Russia who are protesting against the war. “They are also on the right side of history.”

In the narrow street below, hundreds cheered them and their five children.
The abdication and oath taking ceremonies reinforced the endearing quality of this uneventful nation of 429 thousand wedged between Belgium, France and Germany.
Luxembourg measures only 82 by 57 kilometers (52 by 36 miles).
Henri took the oath of office in full military dress for he now commands a 450-strong army guarding a country of forests and valleys that knows no poverty, unemployment or social unrest.
Henri became Luxembourg's sixth grand duke since 1890, when the modern monarchy was established. His 79 year old father resigned after 36 years.
The ceremonies were attended by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and Belgium's King Albert and Queen Paola.

Luxembourg's long-standing prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker has met with the Grand Duke to make an official request for elections.
This follows his recent decision to resign in light of a spying scandal involving the country's secret service.
He spoke with journalists following his meeting with the Grand Duke.
Juncker : I never share the contents of my conversations with the Grand Duke. We have a confidentiality agreement and I respect it.
Journalist : And on elections, do we have any idea of a date?
Juncker : The Grand Duke will make the decision.
Journalist: Is your political career over, or do intend to run again (for office)?
Juncker: My political party will meet tonight and we will know more tomorrow.
Journalist: Do you want to?
Juncker : Very much.
Allegations of corruption and misconduct by Luxembourg's security agency have shaken the prime miniser's hold on power.
"This is stupid... for a "scandal" that everybody knows finally, and I don't see why he should be dismissed for that", said one Luxembourg resident.
"He has been a good Prime minister for 17-18 years now. He did a good job. And now he is dismissed for a stupid thing."

On March 27 and 28, 2021, the Fondation Jeunes Scientifiques Luxembourg (FJSL) organised the 50th national Jonk Fuerscher contest and the 11th Expo-Sciences Luxembourg as a hybrid event both at the Forum Campus Geesseknäppchen and virtually via https://fjsl.illuxi.com.
Given the circumstances, the FJSL had to elaborate an unprecedented format that both allowed the young scientists to present their projects and favoured the cultural exchange between national and international participants, while all accessible to the local audience.
For this purpose, a virtual platform had been created specifically designed for the needs of the participants, where each project - both national and international - had their on virtual booth for the audience to visit. This platform was accessible free of charge to everybody with a computer, tablet or smartphone.
Meanwhile each national team participating in the contest was invited individually to the Forum Campus Geesseknäppchen to present their project in person on stage in front of the jury of experts and in the presence of HRH the Hereditary Grand Duke. These presentations were live-streamed onto the virtual platform, RTL play, science.lu, and the social media channels of the Science Center Luxembourg (and are now accessible via our YouTube channel).
Recorded by apex.
