What's the Sound of Colour? Kandinsky and Music
In this latest episode of ‘Listening in’, I look at the work of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky and how his paintings were influenced by music. Kandinsky had synesthesia, which meant that when he heard sounds, he saw colour and when he saw colour, he heard music. In this essay, I consider how he thought about colour and form (including what he thought some colours sounded like), as well as considering how his push towards abstraction was to achieve the freedom of expression he felt music had already attained. In particularly, I focus on his 10 ‘Compositions’, which seem to be the pinnacle of his abstract work, and possibly the closest he ever got to music in art.

Wassily Kandinsky - The Creator
The Russian painter and graphic artist Wassily Kandinsky was one of the great masters of modern art, as well as the outstanding representative of pure abstract painting (using only colors and forms) that dominated the first half of the twentieth century.
In 1922 Kandinsky became a professor at the Bauhaus (a school of art, architecture, and design) in Weimar, Germany. His art from about 1920 to 1924 has been called his architectural period because the shapes he used were more precise than before. There are points, straight or broken lines, single or in bunches, and snakelike, radiating segments of circles. The color is cooler, and more subdued (softer, quieter).
Kandinsky became a German citizen in 1928. In 1929 Kandinsky held his first oneman show in Paris, France, and traveled to Belgi...

A short informative video on the Russian born artist Wassily Kandinsky. This video explores expressionism, abstract art, music and colour (synaesthesia), timelines and his famous artwork. Suitable for EYFS, Key Stage 1 (KS1), Key Stage 2 (KS2) and other little learners.
Welcome to this short informational video exploring the artworks of the famous Russian artist, Wassily Kandinsky!
In this video, we'll delve into Kandinsky's fascinating artistic style, which combines elements of expressionism, abstract art, and synaesthesia, as well as take a closer look at some of his most famous works.
We'll start by exploring the idea of expressionism, which is all about conveying emotions and feelings through art. Kandinsky was a master at this, using bold lines, shapes, and colours to create artworks that evoke a sense of energy and movement.
We'll then move on to abstract art, which is all about using shapes and colours to create art that is not based on any recognizable objects or scenes. Kandinsky was a pioneer of this style, and his works often have a dreamlike quality to them that encourages viewers to use their imaginations.
Next, we'll dive into the idea of synaesthesia, which is the experience of seeing colours and shapes in response to different sounds and musical tones. Kandinsky was fascinated by this idea, and he believed that colours and music were connected in a deep and meaningful way.
Finally, we'll take a closer look at some of Kandinsky's most famous works, including "Composition VIII" and "Colour Study." We'll explore the different shapes, colours, and textures that Kandinsky used to create these artworks, and we'll discuss why they continue to be so influential in the world of art today.
Overall, this video is suitable for teachers, Key Stage 1 (KS1), Key Stage 2 (KS2), and other little learners who are interested in exploring the fascinating world of art and learning about one of its most important pioneers, Wassily Kandinsky.

In 1929 Kandinsky held his first oneman show in Paris, France, and traveled to Belgium and the French Riviera. In 1930 he had another exhibition in Paris. In 1931 he produced wall decorations for a large architectural exhibition that was held in Berlin, Germany. When the Bauhaus closed in 1932, Kandinsky moved to Berlin. A year after that he moved to Paris.
From 1927 to 1933, Kandinsky's paintings were characterized by abundant use of pictorial (like real pictures) signs and softer color. This is called his romantic or concrete period. It led to the last phase of his art, spent in France, which was a synthesis (blending) of his previous periods. The paintings of his Paris period have splendid color, rich invention, and delightful humor. In 1939 Kandinsky became a French citizen. He died on December 13, 1944, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.
Kandinsky is still greatly admired today for his own paintings and for being the originator of abstract art. He invented a language of abstract forms with which he replaced the forms of nature. He wanted to mirror the universe in his own visionary world. He felt that painting possessed the same power as music and that sign, line, and color ought to correspond to the vibrations of the human soul.

Wassily Kandinsky: A collection of 366 works (HD)
Description: "One of the pioneers of abstract modern art, Wassily Kandinsky exploited the evocative interrelation between color and form to create an aesthetic experience that engaged the sight, sound, and emotions of the public. He believed that total abstraction offered the possibility for profound, transcendental expression and that copying from nature only interfered with this process. Highly inspired to create art that communicated a universal sense of spirituality, he innovated a pictorial language that only loosely related to the outside world, but expressed volumes about the artist's inner experience. His visual vocabulary developed through three phases, shifting from his early, representative canvases and their divine symbolism to his rapturous and operatic compositions, to his late, geometric and biomorphic flat planes of color. Kandinsky's art and ideas inspired many generations of artists, from his students at the Bauhaus to the Abstract Expressionists after World War II."

NASA Captures What No One Was Supposed To See
Earth is just a tiny speck in the whole galaxy, and aside from the Milky Way, we know next to nothing about what else exists in outer space. Because of our limited capability and technology, we can’t really explore much further than what we have now. However, in the past years, we have known quite a few things that we didn’t know before, thanks to NASA’s efforts. Among these discoveries, there are those that will probably make you not want to sleep at night. From Black Holes to the Hand of God, here is NASA Captures What No One Was Supposed To See

Exposing Underground Alien Bases: CIA's Psychic UFO Hunters
During the 1960s and 70s, the United States and the Soviet Union fought the Cold War on many fronts. Some of these engagements were obvious, like the Cuban Missile Crisis and the proxy wars in Asia.
Other conflicts were not so obvious. In the 1970s, America and Russia engaged in a new type of warfare: psychic warfare.
The CIA was actively recruiting and training people with a natural talent for remote viewing. Remote viewing is projecting your consciousness to anywhere on Earth and beyond.
One remote viewer, entirely by accident, found himself at Mount Hayes in Alaska. Mount Hayes is in the middle of...

The Afterglow of the Big Bang: The Cosmic Microwave Background
The Cosmic Microwave Background [CMB] is the oldest light in the universe that we can see or detect. It was emitted only 380,000 years after the universe was born, back when it was a much less peaceful place. The microwave-band static is fundamentally linked to the Big Bang, and if we map it precisely enough, we can discover a wealth of information about the age, composition and structure of the universe.

SUMMARY
=======
A minor-planet moon is an astronomical object that orbits a minor planet as its natural satellite. As of February 2019, there are 352 minor planets known or suspected to have moons. Discoveries of minor-planet moons (and binary objects, in general) are important because the determination of their orbits provides estimates on the mass and density of the primary, allowing insights of their physical properties that is generally not otherwise possible. The first modern era mention of the possibility of an asteroid satellite was in connection with an occultation of the bright star Gamma Ceti by the asteroid 6 Hebe in 1977. The observer, amateur astronomer Paul D. Maley, detected an unmistakable 0.5 second disappearance of this naked eye star from a site near Victoria, Texas. Many hours later, several observations were reported in Mexico attributed to the occultation by 6 Hebe itself. Although not confirmed, this documents the first formally documented case of a suspected companion of an asteroid.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
A minor-planet moon is an astronomical object that orbits a minor planet as its natural satellite. It is thought that many asteroids and Kuiper belt objects may possess moons, in some cases quite substantial in size. As of October 2016, there are over 300 minor planets known to have moons.

The story of how the Rolls Royce Merlin engine equipped the extraordinary P-51 Mustang and the evolution of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190's engine, all the way to the story of the first functioning centrifugal turbojet in April 1937, Frank Whittle's creation.
The Rolls-Royce Merlin is a British liquid-cooled V-12 piston aero engine of 27-litres (1,650 cu in) capacity. Rolls-Royce designed the engine and first ran it in 1933 as a private venture. Initially known as the PV-12, it was later called Merlin following the company convention of naming its four-stroke piston aero engines after birds of prey.
After several modifications, the first production variants of the PV-12 were completed in 1936. The first operational aircraft to enter service using the Merlin were the Fairey Battle, Hawker Hurricane, and Supermarine Spitfire. The Merlin remains most closely associated with the Spitfire and Hurricane, although the majority of the production run was for the four-engined Avro Lancaster heavy bomber. A series of rapidly-applied developments, brought about by wartime needs, markedly improved the engine's performance and durability. Starting at 1,000 horsepower (750 kW) for the first production models, most late-war versions produced just under 1,800 horsepower (1,300 kW), and the very latest version as used in the de Havilland Hornet over 2,000 horsepower (1,500 kW).
One of the most successful aircraft engines of the World War II era, some 50 versions of the Merlin were built by Rolls-Royce in Derby, Crewe, and Glasgow, as well as by Ford of Britain at their Trafford Park factory, near Manchester. A de-rated version was also the basis of the Rolls-Royce/Rover Meteor tank engine. Post-war, the Merlin was largely superseded by the Rolls-Royce Griffon for military use, with most Merlin variants being designed and built for airliners and military transport aircraft.
The Packard V-1650 was a version of the Merlin built in the United States. Production ceased in 1950 after a total of almost 150,000 engines had been delivered. Merlin engines remain in Royal Air Force service today with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and power many restored aircraft in private ownership worldwide.
During his spare time on the squadron and at CFS Frank Whittle gave much thought to the application of the internal combustion turbine as a means to drive the aeroplane propeller. As others had before him, he soon discovered that the levels of component efficiency in any suitable gas turbine engine would be dauntingly difficult to achieve. And then, as he would say in later life, “the penny dropped” and he perceived the possibility of using the high velocity/high mass flow exhaust to obtain propulsion by reaction. In doing so, he was dismissing the altitude limitations of the internal combustion engine and the speed limitations of the propeller. A practical form of turbojet was borne. An entirely new horizon for aeronautics was about to materialize.
Whittle worked on the business of the design of an engine with a potential thrust sufficient to propel a small airplane at very high speeds and at very high altitudes. He settled on an arrangement that incorporated a two-stage centrifugal compressor and a two-stage (Curtis) turbine.
He showed his idea to the station commandant, Group Captain Baldwin, who, perceiving strategic importance and a need for secrecy, sent him to be interviewed by the engine division at the Air Ministry. They in turn, arranged for him to meet Dr A A Griffith at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE). Griffith had started seriously considering gas turbines for propeller-driven aircraft as early as 1926. In a meeting of considerable consequence, Griffith rejected Whittle’s proposals and convinced the Ministry that the idea did not warrant any further attention. Unfortunately, Griffith had his own agenda. He would have known full well that he would be instructed to work on the turbojet should he admit any serious practicality. Despite this setback, Whittle went ahead and applied for a patent – granted in January 1930. However, as the President of the Air Council declared that there was no need for secrecy, it was published in 1931.

SUMMARY
=======
The fictional portrayal of our Solar System has often included planets, moons, and other celestial objects which do not actually exist in reality. Some of these objects were, at one time, seriously considered as hypothetical planets which were either thought to have been observed, or were hypothesized in order to explain certain celestial phenomena. Often such objects continued to be used in literature long after the hypotheses upon which they were based had been abandoned.
Other non-existent Solar System objects used in fiction have been proposed or hypothesized by persons with no scientific standing, while yet others are purely fictional and were never intended as serious hypotheses about the structure of the Solar System.

One remote viewer, entirely by accident, found himself at Mount Hayes in
Alaska. Mount Hayes is in the middle of nowhere. There's no civilization for miles. But something was calling him to the mountain.
Then he looked *inside* the mountain. There was a base hidden inside Mount Hayes. Then he saw - this was not a base built by humans.
When multiple sources confirmed the existence of the base, they soon realized: this was only the beginning.

Acute Alcohol Intoxication
For the past couple weeks, I've had a lot of patients come in with the diagnosis of "alcohol overdose".
Managing each of these patients was different based on their past medical history, whether or not they were a chronic alcoholic, and/or if there was any conflicting drug use.
So, for this weeks video, I want to talk about the clinical manifestations of alcohol overdose and possible treatment options in the emergency department.
We'll be discussing:
- The rate at which alcohol cleared from your system
- Vital signs and metabolic abnormalities seen in acute alcohol overdose
- Wernicke’s and Hepatic encephalopathy
- How to test for asterixis and what this means
- Gastric lavage and Charcoal - are these still offered?
We hope you enjoy!

Why CSOs are petitioning Parliament over failed alcohol control bill | TALK OF THE NATION
This week, a coalition of civil society organizations petitioned Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, challenging the rejection of the Alcohol Control Bill 2023, which aimed to regulate the sale, purchase, and consumption of alcohol in Uganda. This decision followed a report presented by Sylvia Nayebare from the Committees on Trade and Health on August 13, 2024. Tonight on Talk of the Nation, we explore the key points of the petition and discuss its significance with Prof. Nazarius Mbona Tumwesigye of Makerere University.

Alcohol intoxication, also referred to as drunkenness, ethanol intoxication, or alcohol poisoning in severe cases, is a temporary condition caused by drinking too much alcohol. The amount of alcohol needed for intoxication varies from person to person.
Alcohol intoxication is the direct result of alcohol consumption. The DSM-5 explains that alcohol intoxication is characterized by clinically significant behavioral or psychological changes that occur after drinking alcohol. Common symptoms include slurred speech, poor balance, dizziness, headache and nausea.
The most common symptoms of alcohol intoxication are slurred speech, impaired coordination, trouble with balance and walking, involuntary eye movement, impaired attention or memory and loss of consciousness. The signs of alcohol intoxication are in alterations in a person's consciousness, cognition, perception, judgment, affect, or behavior. These can vary between people and depend on the severity of intoxication. Not only the effects of alcohol but also the complications caused by it – such as accidents and violence – are a major threat to a person’s health.
Alcohol intoxication can lead to a variety of injuries and dangerous medical conditions. Because alcohol impairs judgment, intoxicated individuals may make unwise or unsafe decisions. Gambling, unsafe sex, and physical confrontation can lead to injury or chronic health problems. Additionally, the poor physical coordination related to alcohol intoxication can make intoxicated individuals more likely to sustain injuries during every-day activities such as cooking, swimming or driving.
Clinical Assessment of Intoxication
Recognizing the following signs and symptoms can help you assess the patient's level of intoxication:
General Physical Examination- Incoordination, Unsteady gait, Nystagmus
Writing test
Reading test
Walking along a straight line
Finger - nose test
Finger-finger test
Picking up a coin from the floor
Romberg’s sign/test
General Appearance - Shouting, violent, disinhibited, disrobing, drowsy, unable to care for himself, vomiting, misbehaving, threatening, socially inappropriate behavior
Motor Activity - Restless
Speech - Slurred speech, louder speech than usual
Mood - crying, laughing,
Thought - talking of big things
Cognitive functions - Impairment in attention or memory, Stupor or coma
Treatment of Alcohol Intoxication
Although the majority of alcohol intoxication is naturally resolved with time, acute alcohol intoxication may require emergency medical care. The clinical goal in treating alcohol intoxication is to stabilize the patient’s clinical condition. Patients are usually treated with intravenous fluid to hydrate the patient and to correct hypoglycemia or electrolyte imbalance. In some cases, medication is used to relieve nausea or vomiting. Special attention is paid to the patient’s respiratory, cardiac, pulmonary, metabolic and gastrointestinal health, as these can be damaged by severe alcohol intoxication
Perhaps the most important component of treating acute alcohol intoxication is to determine whether the alcohol intoxication is the result of a single incident or chronic alcohol abuse. This can be done through blood tests, to determine biological markers for alcohol dependence and patient interview. If the alcohol intoxication is the result of a single incident, brief counseling and education is usually sufficient to prevent continued harmful drinking practices. If the intoxication is the result of chronic alcohol abuse or dependence, the patient should be referred to alcohol treatment
