"There are more surviving violins and cello's by Stradivari than there are pre-war televisions"
Michael Bennett-Levy set out to collect the earliest surviving television technology in the world, and explore the battle for its control that was fought between Britain, Germany and America in the 1920’s and 30’s.
Using historic artefacts and rarely seen archive the film charts John Logie Baird from his seminal breakthroughs in 1925 and 1926, to his struggles with the BBC's Lord Reith and the Radio Corporation of America along with their subsidiary Marconi/EMI.
In Berlin an incredible survivor is found in the stores of the old East German Postal Service - the Einheits receiver. Launched in 1939 and intended for the propaganda control of the German people, this is the worlds first set with a square screen.
In Dresden, in a very rare interview, Germany’s great television pioneer Professor Manfred Von Ardenne describes his meetings with JL Baird, and his chilling encounter with Adolf Hitler during the 1936 Olympics.
First screened in 1994 for BBC Scotland Ex-S Arts strand, before being screened in Germany, Australia, NZ, Spain, Italy and Canada. The film is often used as a primary source in classes being taught the history of television.
Leman Productions Ltd and Peter Rommel Films for BBC
“Tv is King” was the first Super16mm Film Documentary transmitted by BBC Scotland.
In 1995, “Tv is King” was selected for the opening transmission of the new BRAVO! Network in Canada.
In 2014 a special screening of "Tv is King" took place at the launch of the MZTV Museum in Toronto:

Running the length of the snow-covered Andes, the Royal Inca Highway was an extraordinary engineering achievement. Longer than the Roman Road, it has been compared to the Great Wall of China in both its scope and grandeur. Even the Spanish conquerors thought it had been built by Gods, not men. The road was absolutely essential to the stability of the far-flung Inca empire, and therefore a key element to one of South America's greatest indigenous cultures.
Karin Muller spent seven months traveling down the spine of the Andes and along the coast of Chile -- through rugged mountains, dense jungle, freezing rivers, and desert that has yet to see a single drop of rain. Filming her trek as a series for international television, she used only local transport: hiking, hitchhiking, by motorbike, horse, reed boat, and bus. Throughout her journey she lived among the descendants of the ancient Andean civilizations -- the Inca, Chimu, Wanka, and many others -- sharing their homes and lives.
Stories include:
• one of South America’s largest festivals in Oruru, Bolivia
• the shearing of the vicuna, whose fleece was once reserved for the Inca god-king
• mysteries of the spirits at a shaman’s rite
• a trip down the lethal death highway and burning down a cocaine jungle lab with the Bolivian military..

"When will the next marvel...television...become commonplace? A few years ago a Scientist named Baird experimented with this crude machine...." C/U of primitive machinery. Different shot of the same machine. L/S of row of houses with tall pylons outside. C/U of window at the back of a house which has wires attached to a device in the window pane. Interior. C/U of man pulling a switch and turning a dial. C/U of a man making notes on a piece of paper and talking into a microphone. "Primitive to look at, this transmitting gear sent vision across the Atlantic early in 1928." C/Us of more broadcasting machinery. "Today, television is an accomplished fact...and Baird's machine (which was tested by the Postmaster General recently) daily 'televises' through the ether." M/S of one of the machines being operated, L/S of the same. "The rotating disc scans the object televised, thus permitting the electric eye to transmit the light and shade of the subject under the ray..." C/U of part of the machine in operation. Various shots of the different parts of the transmitting machinery. "Dancing shadows...on Mr. George Gee, the famous comedian (of "Hold Everything" at the Palace Theatre.)" C/U of George Gee speaking into a microphone, presumably being "televised".
"Today's transmitter is a vast advance on the old Coulsdon gear of 1925."M/S of man standing beside equipment twiddling knobs. Low angle shot of transmitter poles. "On the receiving machine George Gee's face is "smiling through". M/S of five girls gathered around the two receiving machines. C/U of a round piece of glass which appears to be receiving a picture of the comedian. (Looks to me like it has been faked by superimposition). A girl's hand turns a knob on the primitive television set. "And Miss Mamie Watson...also of "Hold Everything"...is also experiencing her first taste of television." C/U of Mamie speaking into a microphone, being "televised". "Inside the receiver...Another whirling disc, and a special neon light which flicks the image into being." C/U of the whirling disc. C/U of man lifting off part of the machine which covers the neon light. C/U of two girls looking into the receiver, they chat and laugh. C/U of the receiver with an image of Mamie upon the glass. (Again almost definitely faked). Was an item in Pathe Pictorial issue number 583. Note: flash-frame intertitles. Two safety prints exist.

L’inactivité a mauvaise presse.

L’inactivité a mauvaise presse.
