Dracaena (/drəˈsiːnə/, derived from the romanized form of the Ancient Greekδράκαινα – drakaina, "female dragon", is a genus of about 40 species of trees and succulentshrubs. In the APG III classification system, it is placed in the familyAsparagaceae, subfamily Nolinoideae (formerly the family Ruscaceae). It has also formerly been separated (sometimes with Cordyline) into the family Dracaenaceae or placed in the Agavaceae (now Agavoideae). The majority of the species are native to Africa, with a few in southern Asia and one in tropical Central America. The segregate genus Pleomele is now generally included in Dracaena. The genus Sanseviera is closely related, and has recently been synonymized under Dracaena in the Kubitzki system.
Description
Species of Dracaena have a secondary thickening meristem in their trunk, which is quite different from the thickening meristem found in dicotyledonous plants and is termed dracaenoid thickening by some authors. This characteristic is shared with members of the Agavoideae and Xanthorrhoeoideae among other members of the Asparagales.

The Dracaena Fragrans Houseplant is also known as the Dragon Plant, corn plant, or Cornstalk plant.
Buy Your Own Dracena Here: https://geni.us/Dracaena-Fragrans
The Name Dracaena originates from Ancient Greek and means - female dragon which is why it’s often referred to as the Dragon plant.
There are 120 different species of Dracaena, some taking the form of huge slow-growing trees like this stunning Dracaena Cinnabari in Yemen, but most people know Dracaena Fragrans commonly used mainly as houseplants.
Dracaena are grown mainly for their beautiful foliage and structural stems but the designation “Fragrans’ refers to the powerful fragrance of its flowers that are rarely seen in houseplants as they are very unpredictable and generally only flower on mature plants over 5-10 years old! The patient houseplant parent that can care for their plant for more than 5 years may be rewarded by the amazing sweet scent of the flowers that usually open in the evening and are so powerful can almost be too much! I know this first hand as I was lucky enough to have my Dracaena flower last year for the first time and it was a very special moment for me, unfortunately, I can’t find any photos of the flowers fully open but have many tiny jasmine-like star-shaped flowers that you wouldn’t think could pack such a powerful scent!
So how best to care for your Dracaena?
Luckily they are very easy robust houseplants and will tolerate a wide spectrum of light levels and water amounts. The best care you can give your Dracaena is to place it in a well-lit room, water well, then wait until the soil starts to dry out and water well again. Feed once a month in the growing season and discontinue in the winter if you live in a country that gets cold in winter. If your room is not as bright it will still do fine but may just grow a little slower and so will need a little less water.
Propagation: Dracaena can be propagated from a section of stem that once allowed to dry can be potted in most compost or sand and new shoots will grow from old foliar scars where leaves used to be.
Dracaena is a great plant for first-time houseplant parents or for people who are not confident with houseplants as they will readily forgive you if you forget to water them from time to time and will still reward your absent-mindedness with beautiful foliage for many years to come!
If you would like to try out a Dracaena for yourself you can get one from the link below.

In this video, I will demonstrate you 3 different methods used in propagating or rooting the cuttings of Dracaena Marginata plant with rooting result of tip cuttings at the end of this video. Please watch the entire video.
You can see the mother plant from which I took out the cuttings, as usual from my hospital garden. There were actually two of these trees, one was pruned very badly sometime back. I have shown you these in yesterdays video. Also to remind you, the other names of this plant are Rainbow plant, Ribbon Plant, Madagascar Dragon, or simply the Dragon Tree.
Well, now you can have a look at these tall cuttings I got from the mother plant. Now I Have lot of resources to demonstrate 3 different approaches to propagate Dracaena Marginata.
Now I will prepare these cuttings by removing the leaves from the meristem, leaving the top ones. And Make different cuttings. The cuttings are similar to any of the cuttings you make for propagation and can be longer or shorter to 6 – 8 inches or any size.
Now, The unique method to propagate Dracaena Marginata is from STUB CUTTINGS. Make small cuttings like 1 to 2 inches incuding one or two nodes as shown here.
Simply plant them in soil and slightly cover them with soil. You can also apply some rooting hormone at the ends. Lets wait and watch for this result, because I am using this method for the first time.
The second method is rooting in water – take water bottles like these and do not fill more that 1/3 of water in these bottles. Then simply drop the cuttings into these.
The Third method is the usual method what we use regularly. That’s planting in soil. Usually these Dracaena are grown as a bunch of plants as seen in the mother plant. Hence you can plant more than one in a single plant close to each other like this. So that when it grows, it becomes more bushy.
After doing this keep everything undisturbed for few days. You can change the water in the bottles once in 5 days to avoid bacterial and fungal growth.
Here I will show you some tip cuttings done about 2 months ago for these two dracaena plants. I will also remove these and show you the new roots that developed and repot these into larger pots.
