The Microphones was the name of a musical project based in Olympia, Washington, and fronted by Phil Elvrum. Elvrum was the principal songwriter and producer behind the Microphones' albums, but he also collaborated with other local musicians on his recordings and on tour. Many of Elvrum's recordings from this period were released by the label K Records. Since 2003, Elvrum (who now spells his surname Elverum) has recorded and performed under the name Mount Eerie.
History
Early years
Phil Elvrum became involved in the Washington music scene while working at The Business, a record store in his home town of Anacortes, in the mid-1990s. Elvrum began experimenting with recording equipment in the back of the store, which led to the store's owner Bret Lunsford releasing two cassettes (Microphone and Wires and Cords) on his label, KNW-YR-OWN. Elvrum also played drums in Lunsford's band, D+, before moving to Olympia in 1997 to attend Evergreen State College.
Whilst in Olympia, Elvrum caught the attention of K Records owner and musician Calvin Johnson. After recording for some time at the Dub Narcotic studios, Elvrum was able to complete his first full-length album, a CD entitled Tests, which was released in 1998 on Elsinor Records. Tests combined songs from his earlier cassette releases and the recently recorded Dub Narcotic recordings. At the same time, Elvrum released his first 7" single, "Bass Drum Dream" on Up Records.
Lennon has described the material as "a bit more free-flowing than [his] previous work", calling it his "favourite album so far". Revealing how Everything Changes came about, Lennon explained: "Obviously, if you sit down and play around for a bit, you’re going to come up with ideas. One thing led to another and pretty soon I had about 30 ideas, so I invited some friends to come over and flesh them out into songs".
Release
Everything Changes was released on 2 October 2011 on CD by Nova Sales & Distribution (UK) and Conehead; and only saw a UK/Ireland release. The album is his first since 1998's Photograph Smile. The album is set to be released on clear vinyl.
The first single from the album was "Lookin' 4 Luv", released digitally on 11 September 2011. The second single was a remix of an album track, "Guess It Was Me", released on 8 April 2012.
Don't Wake Me Up is the first official album by the band The Microphones. It was released on K Records in 1999. The vinyl and CD versions had different cover art. The vinyl release used the cover art from the "Moon Moon" single, and included a fold-out poster of the photograph on the CD cover.

The Microphones - I Want Wind To Blow
off of the glow part 2
The thunder clouds broke up
And the rain dried up
The lightning let up
The clacking shutters just shut up
There's no black or white
No change in the light
No night, no golden sun
The sound of cars
The smell of bars
The awful feeling of electric heat
And the fluorescent lights
There's sacrifice
There's hard feelings
There's pointless waste
I want wind to blow
My clothes off me
Sweep me off my feet
Take me up and bring me back
Oh, where I can see
Days pass by me
I have no head to hold in grief
There's no hope for me
I've been set free
There's no breeze
There's no ship on my sea

The Microphones - The Glow Pt 2
Lyrics:
I took my shirt off in the yard
no one saw that the skin on my shoulders was golden
now it's not
my shirt's back on
i forgot my songs
the glow is gone
my gliding body stopped
i could not get through september without a battle
i faced death
i went in with my arms swinging
but i heard my own breath
i had to face that i'm still living
i'm still flesh
i hold on to awful feelings
i'm not dead
there's no end
my face is red
my blood flows harshly
my heart beats loudly
my chest still draws breath
i hold it
i'm buoyant
there's no end
