Afonso I (25 July 1109, Coimbra, Guimarães or Viseu – 6 December 1185, Coimbra), more commonly known as D. Afonso Henriques (Portuguese pronunciation:[ɐˈfõsu ẽˈʁikɨʃ]), nicknamed "the Conqueror" (Portuguese:O Conquistador), "the Founder" (O Fundador) or "the Great" (O Grande) by the Portuguese, and El-Bortukali [in Arabic البرتغال] ("the Portuguese") and Ibn-Arrik [in Arabic ابن الرَّنك or ابن الرَنْق] ("son of Henry", "Henriques") by the Moors whom he fought, was the first King of Portugal. He achieved the independence of the southern part of the Kingdom of Galicia, the County of Portugal, from Galicia's overlord, the King of León, in 1139, establishing a new kingdom and doubling its area with the Reconquista, an objective that he pursued until his death, in 1185, after forty-six years of wars against the Moors.
Mother's rule
Afonso I was the son of Henry of Burgundy and Theresa, the natural daughter of King Alfonso VI of León and Castile. The pair reigned jointly as Count and Countess of Portugal until Henry's death, after which Theresa reigned alone. Afonso was about three years old when his father Count Henry, died on 12 May 1112 during the siege of Astorga. In an effort to pursue a larger share in the Leonese inheritance, his mother Theresa married Fernando Pérez, Count of Trava, the most powerful count in Galicia.

This is the fourth and the last video for the "Inception of Portugal". And, it deals with Afonso Henriques, who was born in 1109 in Guimaraes, was the first and most famous legendary king of Portugal, and is a famous figure in early Portuguese history. He was born to Infanta Dona Teresa, the illegitimate daughter of Alfonso VI of Leon and Castile, and Count Henry of Burgundy. Afonso was trained in war and diplomacy and known for strong leadership and military prowess. The reign of Afonso Henriques was marked by four periods: The regency of Infanta Theresa, early wars of detachment from Galicia, acquisition war with Moors, and a consolidation period. Afonso fought many wars with local nobles and King Alfonso VII of Leon and Castile until he was recognized as the ruler of Portugal. He moved the capital from Guimaraes to Coimbra to diminish the influence of northern magnets. After peace with Galicia, Afonso headed to the south to defeat the Moors but was initially unsuccessful due to the rivalries among the Muslim emirates. He later gathered chivalry, led a successful expedition against the Moors, and proclaimed himself King of Portugal at Lamego. Afonso's first major victory was the siege of Santarem, where he surprised the defense and laid siege before capturing it. Further, in the famous legendary Battle of Ourique, somewhere south of Beja, he got a major victory against the Moors, i.e. The Almoravid, the Muslim fanatic ruler of the contemporary Andalusia, the part of the Iberian peninsula. After this, he declared himself the King of Portugal. Further, he captured Lisbon from the moors and go on a winning spree adding territories to his empire.
Even during the Middle Ages, it was uncommon for a small, insignificant county to grow into a powerful, compact little kingdom in one man's reign, and that the new kingdom should be perpetuated into modern times is quite unprecedented in European history. There was no reason why the part of the Iberian peninsula known as Portugal should have formed an independent kingdom more than Leon or Castile. It was the greatness of one man that made it an independent country. The story of Portugal shows that a country is not always defined by its natural borders or by the races of its people.

He achieved the independence of the County of Portugal, establishing a new kingdom and doubling its area with the Reconquista, an objective that he pursued until his death.
Afonso was the son of Teresa of León and Henry of Burgundy, rulers of the County of Portugal.
Henry died in 1112, leaving Theresa to rule alone.
Unhappy with Theresa's romantic relationship with Galician Fernando Pérez de Traba and his political influence, the Portuguese nobility rallied around Afonso,
who revolted and defeated his mother at the Battle of São Mamede in 1128 and became Count of Portugal soon afterwards.
In 1139, Afonso renounced the suzerainty of the Kingdom of León and established the independent Kingdom of Portugal.
Afonso actively campaigned against the Moors in the south.
In 1139 he won a decisive victory at the Battle of Ourique, and in 1147 he conquered Santarém and Lisbon from the Moors.
He secured the independence of Portugal following a victory over León at Valdevez and received papal approval through Manifestis Probatum.

Afonso I (Portuguese pronunciation: [ɐˈfõsu]; born 1106, 1109 or 1111; died 1185), also called Afonso Henriques, nicknamed the Conqueror (Portuguese: O Conquistador) by the Portuguese,
and El-Bortukali (in Arabic البرتقالي "the Portuguese") and Ibn-Arrink or Ibn Arrinq (in Arabic ابن الرَّنك or ابن الرَنْق "son of Henry", "Henriques") by the Moors whom he fought,
was the first king of Portugal.
Afonso died in 1185 and was succeeded by his son, Sancho I. Afonso was the son of Teresa, the illegitimate daughter of King Alfonso VI of León and Castile, and her husband, Henry of Burgundy...
