Dodge City
Dodge City is a pure definition of the Westa gateway to history that began with the opening of the Santa Fe Trail by William Becknell in 1821 and became a great commercial route between Franklin, Missouri and Santa Fe, New Mexico until 1880. Thousands of wagons traveled the Mountain Branch of the trail which went west from Dodge City along the north bank of the Arkansas River into Colorado. For those willing to risk the dangers of waterless sand hills, a shorter route called the Cimarron Cutoff crossed the river near Dodge City and went southwest to the Cimarron River. Fort Dodge was established in 1865 on the Santa Fe Trail, midway between two major Indian crossings on the Arkansas River. It was an important outpost on the western frontier, offering protection to wagon trains and serving ...

It was an important outpost on the western frontier, offering protection to wagon trains and serving as a supply base for troops engaged in Indian wars. Wild game was abundant, including vast herds of buffalo. Dodge City was founded in 1872, just five miles west of Fort Dodge. It quickly became a trade center for travelers and buffalo hunters. The same year, the railroad reached Dodge City, assuring its continued existence and making it a major shipping point. The town thrived and its populace of buffalo hunters, railroad workers, soldiers, and drifters settled their differences in shoot-outs. Lawlessness reigned, creating the need for a burial placeBoot Hill Cemetery. Dodge City was known as the wickedest little city in the west during the 1870s and 1880s. Notable lawmen such as Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp became legends in their own time as they fought to establish law and order on the streets of Dodge City.
Relive the wild west as you stroll along the old Dodge Citys boardwalk. Tour Dodge City, Fort Dodge, and the Santa Fe Trail on the Dodge City Trolley.

Dodge City is the county seat of Ford County, Kansas, United States, named after nearby Fort Dodge. The city is famous in American culture for its history as a wild frontier town of the Old West. As of the 2010 census, its population was 27,340.
Dodge City became famous, and no town could match its reputation as a true frontier settlement of the Old West. Dodge City had more famous (and infamous) gunfighters working at one time or another than any other town in the West, many of whom participated in the Dodge City War of 1883. It boasted also the usual array of saloons, gambling halls, and brothels, including the famous Long Branch Saloon and China Doll brothel. For a time in 1884, Dodge City even had a bullfighting ring where Mexican bullfighters would put on a show with specially chosen Longhorn bulls.
As more agricultural settlers moved into western Kansas, pressure increased on the Kansas State Legislature to do something about splenic fever, known today as anthrax. Consequently, in 1885, the quarantine line was extended across the state and the Western Trail was all but shut down. By 1886, the cowboys, saloon keepers, gamblers, and brothel owners moved west to greener pastures, and Dodge City became a sleepy little town much like other communities in western Kansas.

Not only is Dodge City famous for it's own western history with cowboys, outlaws, and such, it is also famous for being a model town for the show, Gunsmoke starring James Arness as Sheriff Matt Dillon. There is even a statue downtown honoring Arness and Ms. Kitty and even Festus are noted in the museum downtown (we will show you that in our next episode). We stayed at a great place, Gunsmoke RV Park located right at the edge of town. It had a pool, laundry room, playground, and good size sites. We definitely recommend it if you are in the area. It's gated and a Good Sam affiliated park.

We have always LOVED traveling and now seeing our world on the road has given us opportunities to see more and make memories as a family. We are teachers and are blessed to have the same "vacation" schedule, so we make the most of it with our kids by being both weekend warriors and "school schedule" traveling--We call ourselves part-timers. We hope to share what we learn while exploring this beautiful world around us and inspire you to get out and see it, too.

Note: Pay attention to the "sing-off" that causes the fight; director Michael Curtiz would reuse the same formula a few years later for his classic among classics, CASABLANCA.
