I get asked all the time about doctoral level degrees such as MD, Ph.D, Pharm.D etc and whether they're worth it... Generally speaking, they usually aren't worth it. The time it takes to get a doctorate, the risk, and the cost involved (actual cost and opportunity cost) usually aren't worth the payoff from a personal finance perspective.
This is why I've made videos talking about how I think MD/DO doctorate degrees are overrated etc. As always, there are some exceptions to this for the right person and the right situation. There are many reasons for this which I've gone over in other videos that range from the time it takes to get the degree (over 12 years on average for a Ph.D for instance) to the fact that the loans you have to take out have much higher interest rates than undergraduate loans.
Some of the doctorate degrees/professional degrees/careers I'll be talking about in this video are: doctorate in psychology, doctorate in education, physician (medical doctor or doctor of osteopathic medicine), Orthodontist (DDS/DMD + residency), Pharm. D (pharmacist), College professor, Lawyer (Juris Doctor), Dentist (DDS), architect, teachers, physical therapist (Doctorate of physical therapy DPT), Veterinarian (Doctor of veterinary medicine DVM), PsyD degree, optometrist (doctor of optometry OD), acupuncturist/naturopath (Doctor of naturopathy ND or Doctor of naturopathic medicine NMD),and chiropractor degree (doctor of chiropractic DC degree)
KEEP IN MIND: The Debt-To-Income (DTI) Ratios mentioned in this video are taken from an organization (studentloanplanner) that helps people get out of student loan debt. Because of that, the figures shown are likely higher than average, as people with high amounts of debt are more likely to seek out a service like this. So don't pay as much attention to how bad the DTI ratio is and pay more attention to which degrees have a higher ratio compared to each other.
