The name Dniester derives from Sarmatiandānu nazdya "the close river." The Dnieper, also of Sarmatian origin, derives from the opposite meaning, "the river on the far side". Alternatively, according to V. Abaev Dniester would be a blend of Scythiandānu "river" and ThracianIster, the previous name of the river, literally Dān-Ister (River Ister). The Ancient Greek name of Dniester, Tyras (Τύρας), is from Scythiantūra, meaning "rapid." The names of the Don and Danube are also from the same Proto Indo-European word *dānu - river.
In Russian, it is known as Днестр, translit.Dnestr, in Yiddish: Nester נעסטער; in Turkish, Turla and during antiquity, it was called Tyras in Latin and Danastris in Greek. Classical authors have also referred to it as Danaster. These early forms, without -i- but with -a-, contradict Abaev's hypothesis.
The mighty and rapid Dniester carves its way through the Dniester Canyon National Park along the length of 250 kilometres.
Steep slopes overhang the river instead of medieval architecture. The canyon is a wonderful and unique natural region.

Crossing Dniester River by ferry at Tiraspol towards Chitcani | Trip to Moldova & Transnistria 2021
The Dniester is a river in Eastern Europe. It runs first through Ukraine and then through Moldova, from which it more or less separates the breakaway territory of Transnistria, finally discharging into the Black Sea on Ukrainian territory again. Tiraspol is the capital of Transnistria (de facto), a breakaway state in Moldova (de jure), where it is the second largest city. The city is located on the eastern bank of the Dniester River. Tiraspol is a regional hub of light industry, such as furniture and electrical goods production. Chitcani is a commune in Causeni District, Moldova. It consists of the village Chițcani and two small villages (hamlets), Merenești and Zahorna. Chitcani is situated to the south-east of the city of Tighina (Bender). The locality, although situated on the right (we...

Moldova and the Dniester – Dammed by Ukraine
Studies show the Dniester Hydropower Complex is already having a devastating impact on the flow, water quality and biological diversity of Dniester River – the main source of drinking water for almost 8 million in Ukraine and Moldova. Yet Kyiv plans to continue expanding the complex as it looks to secure its energy independence.

Dniester river shallows due to Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in west of Ukraine
Rocket attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure are causing a drop in the Dniester reservoir's water level. This has already led to a significant shallowing of the river by 3-4 meters. This causes massive fish mortality, destroys a number of ecosystems, and leads to an environmental catastrophe. Hydroelectric Power Plant since mid-April aims to stabilize the Unified Energy System of Ukraine, exacerbating the reservoir's depletion. Amid Russia's intensified shelling of Ukrainian energy targets since March 2024, including the Dnipro and Dniester hydroelectric plants which caused significant damage and destruction. In addition, Ukraine is afraid that Russia will destroy the dams at these hydroelectric power plants, which will lead to an even greater disaster. As the Russians did exactly a y...

Flying, when all I want to do is die. Feels like you're flying. Oh god I wish that I could fly. You wanna lift me up but you don't know and you don't see I'm stuck in my ways, stuck in my ways. Breathing, when all I wanna do is drown. You keep on breathing, and I keep on sinking down. You wanna lift me up but you don't know and you don't see I'm stuck in my ways, stuck in my ways.
