Dissolution of the Monasteries
The Dissolution of the Monasteries, sometimes referred to as the Suppression of the Monasteries, was the set of administrative and legal processes between 1536 and 1541 by which Henry VIII disbanded Catholic monasteries, priories, convents and friaries in England, Wales and Ireland, appropriated their income, disposed of their assets, and reassigned or dismissed their former members and functions. Although the policy was originally envisaged as increasing the regular income of the Crown, much former monastic property was sold off to fund Henry's military campaigns in the 1540s. He was given the authority to do this in England and Wales by the Act of Supremacy, passed by Parliament in 1534, which made him Supreme Head of the Church in England, thus separating England from Papal authority, and by the First Suppression Act (1536) and the Second Suppression Act (1539). Henry VIII is known for being a rather notorious King of England who had 6 wives, however his reign brought a huge degree of change to England. When he split from the Catholic Church, he declared himself the 'Supreme Head of the Church,' and forced those within his realm to accept him as this. However at the time the infamous Tudor monarch was rather poor and he needed a source of income to fund his expensive military campaigns across Europe. Henry looked towards the hundreds of monastic buildings, friaries, abbeys and priories across England and saw the wealth that they had accumulated. The Dissolution of the Monasteries is often characterised as a simple story of greed and appropriation enacted by Thomas Cromwell on behalf Henry VIII, which saw the religious evicted and all England's great abbeys and priories destroyed in less than a decade. Whilst clearly a devastating experience for the former inmates of these monastic houses and the laity who relied upon them, in this lecture Dr Willmott will explore in greater detail what actually happened to many of the monasteries after the Dissolution, suggesting that there is more to the narrative than just the theme of wanton destruction. Henry VIII is known for being a rather notorious King of England who had 6 wives, however his reign brought a huge degree of change to England. When he split from the Catholic Church, he declared himself the 'Supreme Head of the Church,' and forced those within his realm to accept him as this. However at the time the infamous Tudor monarch was rather poor and he needed a source of income to fund his expensive military campaigns across Europe.
Henry looked towards the hundreds of monastic buildings, friaries, abbeys and priories across England and saw the wealth that they had accumulated. Some of these monastic orders had large amounts of land and money, and Henry looked to seize this. He placed Thomas Cromwell in charge who sent out a number of investigators searching for reasons to shut down these religious houses. This was known as the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
Cromwell shut down hundreds of buildings, took the wealth of all of these and transferred it into the treasury making the King incredibly rich. He also ordered that a number of buildings be destroyed, libraries ruined and also made thousands of staff, monks and nuns homeless and with their way of life in tatters. For a number of people who resented this and stood up to the King, they were also executed including the Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, Richard Whiting who was hung, drawn and quartered. His head was then displayed above his own abbey.
The Dissolutions of the Monasteries were an incredibly brutal and powerful sign of Henry VIII's power, and they changed the face of English History forever. So join us today as we look at 'Henry VIII's Brutal Dissolution Of The Monasteries.'

His book, The Dissolution of the Monasteries in England and Wales has recently been released by Equinox Publishing.

Henry looked towards the hundreds of monastic buildings, friaries, abbeys and priories across England and saw the wealth that they had accumulated. Some of these monastic orders had large amounts of land and money, and Henry looked to seize this. He placed Thomas Cromwell in charge who sent out a number of investigators searching for reasons to shut down these religious houses. This was known as the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
Cromwell shut down hundreds of buildings, took the wealth of all of these and transferred it into the treasury making the King incredibly rich. He also ordered that a number of buildings be destroyed, libraries ruined and also made thousands of staff, monks and nuns homeless and with their way of life in tatters. For a number of people who resented this and stood up to the King, they were also executed including the Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, Richard Whiting who was hung, drawn and quartered. His head was then displayed above his own abbey.

The Dissolution of the Monasteries is often characterised as a simple story of greed and appropriation enacted by Thomas Cromwell on behalf Henry VIII, which saw the religious evicted and all England's great abbeys and priories destroyed in less than a decade. Whilst clearly a devastating experience for the former inmates of these monastic houses and the laity who relied upon them, in this lecture Dr Willmott will explore in greater detail what actually happened to many of the monasteries after the Dissolution, suggesting that there is more to the narrative than just the theme of wanton destruction. Drawing together evidence primarily from archaeological sources and surviving remains, he will outline not only how church and cloister were systematically usually dismantled with great care, but in the majority of cases transformed and adapted to new uses over many decades after their initial closure in the 1530s.
Dr Hugh Willmott is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Sheffield, and the Chair of the Society for Church Archaeology. He has conducted excavations at Monk Bretton Priory and Thornton Abbey, as well as the Early Medieval ecclesiastical sites of West Halton and Little Carlton in Lincolnshire. His book, The Dissolution of the Monasteries in England and Wales has recently been released by Equinox Publishing.

On this day in Tudor history, 23rd October 1538, Thomas Goldwell, Prior of Christchurch, Canterbury, wrote to Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII’s chief advisor, regarding the forthcoming dissolution of his monastery and its fate.
It's quite a sad, grovelling letter, and even more sad when you know the full impact of Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries, which was devastating for his country.

You've probably never heard of John Hopkins, but his versions of the Psalms were "the best-known English verses" in the late 16th and 17th century because they were sung in church by every member of society. Dissolution of the Monasteries
The Dissolution of the Monasteries, sometimes referred to as the Suppression of the Monasteries, was the set of administrative and legal processes between 1536 and 1541 by which Henry VIII disbanded Catholic monasteries, priories, convents and friaries in England, Wales and Ireland, appropriated their income, disposed of their assets, and reassigned or dismissed their former members and functions. Although the policy was originally envisaged as increasing the regular income of the Crown, much former monastic property was sold off to fund Henry's military campaigns in the 1540s. He was given the authority to do this in England and Wales by the Act of Supremacy, passed by Parliament in 1534, which made him Supreme Head of the Church in England, thus separating England from Papal authority, and by the First Suppression Act (1536) and the Second Suppression Act (1539).
