The Eastern Cape as a South African Province came into existence in 1994 and incorporated areas from the former Xhosa homelands of the Transkei and Ciskei, together with what was previously part of the Cape Province. This resulted in several anomalies including the fact that the Province has four supreme courts (in Grahamstown, Port Elizabeth, Bhisho and Mthatha) and enclaves of KwaZulu-Natal in the province. The latter anomaly has fallen away with amendments to municipal and provincial boundaries. The province is also made of Mpondo clan, which primitively descended from Xhosa clan. Some of the Mpondo clan went to this province when they were running away from King Shaka's war. Mpondo people are more closely related to Xhosa, as they use Xhosa as their main home language.

The Wild Coast Eastern Cape South Africa
A Wild Coast Road Trip in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. What an awesome place, with log cabins and camp sites right on the ocean, and a must do is a hike to the pedestrian suspension bridge over the mouth of the Storm's River itself.

Hogsback Village Eastern Cape South Africa | Where to Stay & What to Do
A very special mountain village called Hogsback in the Eastern Cape. I hope this video review of the village of Hogsback, some of the accommodation on offer and stuff to do, offers some useful information for visitors.
We stayed at the Kings Lodge Hotel which is a really traditional and character filled village hotel. Walks in the forest, watrefalls and lunch at The Edge. And we found a really cool little church in a forest, perched on the hillside with the most awesome views. Hogsback is a place that I will definitely be visiting again.
This video was shot before lockdown 2020 kicked in, though things were already starting to become restricted, although we didn't know it at the time, it was our last trip for a very long time.

A short ferry ride across the Kei River and we were in the are previously known as the Transkei, rural South Africa where cows have right of way and life is synched to a much slower pace. The road the Coffee Bay ranges from excellent on the N2 national route, to pretty awful once you get off the main roads. Loads of potholes, unmarked speed humps and an assortment of domestic animals wandering around.
Coffee Bay itself is a strange place, there are no "facilities" as such, no shops other than spaza shops, some basic back packers and pizza joints, but we managed to find a decent guesthouse which was awesome. The village is spoilt by the abundance of rubbish lining the streets, and even beaches, locals told us that the local municipality has long since ceased to function. Which is a pity, because it has so much potential.
The Hole in The Wall is a must visit, we were told that the road was terrible and only passable in a 4x4. Which is incorrect, there is maintenance on the go and it can be done in a normal car. The informal "guides" can be a problem, I found that a firm but friendly approach was the way to go. It's a spectacular natural wonder, I highly recommend it.
NB! I've Re-published this video, the soundtrack wasn't right for the content on the earlier version; same video here, different soundtrack, I do hope you enjoy it.

I'm Chris from Kangela; currently living in the beautiful Garden Route of South Africa (but prone to hit the road to somewhere else at any time). My passion is to travel, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have done my share of exploring the world, camera in hand. I'm a travel fanatic, keen angler, photographer, videographer and occasional travel writer. With a particular weakness for road trips in the great open spaces of Africa, and exploring tropical Indian Ocean Islands. But actually, I'm a fan of anywhere that I haven’t yet been, wherever that might be.

A Wild Coast Road Trip in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. A 2000 km round trip over 7 nights, staying at the Storm's River Mouth Rest Camp in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park for our first night. What an awesome place, with log cabins and camp sites right on the ocean, and a must do is a hike to the pedestrian suspension bridge over the mouth of the Storm's River itself.
Then it was onto the Wild Coast, although we spent one night along the way at Port Alfred. Morgan Bay is about 100km past East London and is very close to the mouth of the Kei River, the start of the Wild Cost proper. A really pleasant town with friendly people, awesome views and a spectacular hike along the cliffs on the edge of the village.

I’m Chris, video creator, outdoor lover, conservation minded overlanding & road trip fan. Now exploring Africa overland and sharing our adventures in video, photos and words. Kangela is aimed at those who want to experience overlanding & road tripping adventures, but who don’t care as much about the vehicle that gets them there, as they do about the journey itself and the destination.
I'm currently embarked on a 2 year long mission, Project #60460, to visit 60 of the most unique places in southern and east Africa to mark my 60th year on this, the only planet that we have. I'll be sharing the adventure with videos, community updates and stories. And along the way I will be highlighting the plight of 3 of Africa's big cats: the Lion, Leopard & Cheetah.
