The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a mainline ProtestantChristian denomination in the United States in the Reformed tradition. It is often referred to as The Christian Church, The Disciples of Christ, or as The Disciples. The Christian Church was a charter participant in the formation of the World Council of Churches and of the Federal Council of Churches (now the National Council of Churches), and it continues to be engaged in ecumenical conversations.
The Disciples' local churches are congregationally governed. In 2008 there were 679,563 members in 3,714 congregations in North America. For 2012, their Yearbook & Directory claimed 625,252 members in 3,627 congregations.
History
The name, Disciples of Christ, is shared by two groups, The Churches of Christ and the independent Christian churches and churches of Christ. They emerged from the same roots. The Stone-Campbell movement began as two separate threads, each without knowledge of the other, during the Second Great Awakening in the early 19th century. The first of these two groups, led by Barton W. Stone began at Cane Ridge, Bourbon County, Kentucky. The group called themselves simply Christians. The second, began in western Pennsylvania and Virginia (now West Virginia), led by Thomas Campbell and his son, Alexander Campbell. Because the founders wanted to abandon all denominational labels, they used the biblical names for the followers of Jesus that they found in the Bible.
The Disciples of Christ are a Christian rap group which originated in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the early 1990s. They released three albums for Star Song Records and later formed their own label, We are One/Throne Room Records.
Beginnings
The core of the group was Ben Reges (born Alton Hood) and Absalom (Kelvin Harvey) who were attending Oberlin College on football scholarship and friend Prophet (Michael Brown). Hood says of that time,
"Basically we were into the world. We both had scholarships to play football. We didn't have Christ in our lives, so we began to party and live the high life, hanging out with girls, that whole party life. We had this void in our lives. So what happened was that I was introduced by some friends to the occult. It got pretty serious."
Hood credits God with cleaning up both him and Harvey from drug addictions born out of their use in occult rituals:
"Praise God, through a supernatural manifestation of the Holy Spirit, God's power came down right there in the room, saved me, delivered me right there on the spot...".

“God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
This verse shows that God loves you and created you for a life that is full and meaningful (John 10:10)!
Why is it that most people are not experiencing this abundant life? Because all of us sin, and our sin has separated us from God (Romans 3:23).
We were created to have fellowship with God, but because of our stubborn self-will, we chose to go our own way, and our fellowship with God was broken. This self-will, characterized by an attitude of active rebellion or passive indifference, is what the Bible calls sin.
“The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). Death is spiritual separation from God.
God is holy and people are sinful, and a great gulf separates us. We are continually trying to reach God and the abundant life through our own efforts, such as a good life, philosophy, or religion – but we fail.
Jesus Christ is God's only provision for our sin. Through Him we can know and experience God's love and plan for our lives! Jesus died in our place (Romans 5:8), rose from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:3-6), and is the only way to God (John 14:6). God has bridged the gulf that separates us from Him by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross in our place to pay the penalty for our sins.
We must individually receive Jesus Christ through faith as Savior and Lord; then we can know and experience God's love and plan for our lives (Ephesians 2:8-9). When we receive Christ, we experience a new birth.
Jesus says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come into him” (Revelation 3:20).
Receiving Christ involves turning to God from self (repentance) and trusting Christ to come into our lives to forgive our sins and to make us what He wants us to be. Just to agree intellectually that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He died on the cross for your sins is not enough. Nor is it enough to have an emotional experience. You receive Jesus Christ by faith, as an act of the will.
You can receive Christ right now by faith through prayer.
Prayer is talking to God. God knows your heart and is not so concerned with your words as He is with the attitude of your heart. Here is a suggested prayer:
“Lord Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be.”
If this prayer expresses the desire of your heart, then you can pray this prayer right now and Christ will come into your life, as He promised.

1. Disciple FEEDS on the Holy Scriptures. (John 8:31; Hebrews 5:8; Matthew 28:19-20)
We don’t read the Bible only to learn the Bible but to learn obedience.

A disciple is not someone who only loves the word but someone who loves the Lord.
“MOST CHRISTIANS ARE EDUCATED WAY BEYOND THEIR LEVEL OF OBEDIENCE”

Heteros mean "another kind," as in, "This wrench doesn't fit; bring me another one.”
The Holy Spirit wants to be to you what Jesus was to the disciples.
Every believer can hear the Holy Spirit, but it takes a disciple to heed the Holy Spirit.
Obedience is the price of friendship with the Holy Spirit.
3. Disciple FORSAKES that which hinders their follow. (Matthew 16:24; Mark 1:17-18; Hebrews 12:1-2)
Who you follow will decide what you forsake.
Devotion to Jesus determines what disciple denies.
Obedience will choose sacrifice.
Discipline is not the goal of discipleship; devotion is!
