LTI Colloquium: Virtuous Cycles Between Knowledge and Data in Medical NLP
Presented by Denis Newman-Griffis (University of Pittsburgh) on November 19, 2021.
Abstract
Representative data are often hard to acquire for phenomena of interest, particularly in specialized domains such as medicine. However, complex knowledge structures such as ontologies and semantic graphs have been built up over decades to represent reasoning and knowledge relied on by domain experts. Data and expert knowledge provide complementary information for hard language problems, pairing a priori attributes and complex relationships with nuanced examples of linguistic regularities difficult to universally specify. Effectively combining data and knowledge is one of the key challenges in developing NLP methods for specialized domains, and advancing human-AI partnerships.

Since China opened to the world, the US and China have developed an extraordinary scientific partnership, which helped China rise to the forefront of global science, expanded America's contribution to science, and has advanced knowledge in key areas of human well-being.
Current political concerns endanger the collaboration. The US fears that China is "stealing" intellectual property to dominate science and technology critical to national security while China complains of US bullying against its rise to world superpower.
This second event of the China Innovation Series featured Richard Freeman (Herbert Ascherman Professor of Economics Harvard; Research Associate, NBER) & Ms. Qingnan Xie (PhD candidate, Nanjing University of Science and Technology). Moderated by Duke's Denis Simon (Senior Adviser to the President for China Affairs and professor of the practice), the speakers discussed the facts about the US-China scientific partnership, how the partnership impacted the world, and each of the partners, and what are the possible consequences of a breakdown in the partnership
This talk was the second event in the Fall 2021 China Innovation series of webinars co-sponsored by Asian Pacific Studies Institute (APSI,) the Duke University Center for International & Global Studies (DUCIGS,) and the Center for Innovation Policy at Duke Law School.
The series was created by Denis Simon.
Upcoming events in the series:
- November 9, Tuesday, 7:00-8:30pm
“The Ebb and Flow of Returned Scientists and Engineers to China: What Does It Tell Us.”
Speaker: Dr. David Zweig (HKUST)
- December 7, Tuesday, 7:00-8:30pm
“Principled Interdependence: How to Maintain America’s High-Tech Advantages Over China”
Speaker: Dr. Scott Kennedy (CSIS)

Session: AI in Education & Intelligent Tutoring System
Abstract
Programming-by-example (PBE), can be a powerful tool to reduce manual work in repetitive data transformation tasks. However, few examples often leave ambiguity and may cause undesirable data transformation by the system. This ambiguity can be resolved by allowing the user to directly edit the synthesized programs; however, this is difficult for non-programmers. Here, we present a novel approach: data-centric disambiguation for data transformation, where users resolve the ambiguity in data transformation by examining and modifying the output rather than the program. The key idea is to focus on the given set of data the user wants to transform instead of pursuing the synthesized program’s generality or completeness. Our system provides visualization and interaction methods that allow users to efficiently examine and fix the transformed outputs, which is much simpler than understanding and modifying the program itself. The user study suggests that our system can successfully help non-programmers to more easily and efficiently process data.
