The King's Singers are a Britisha cappellavocal ensemble founded in 1968. They are named after King's College in Cambridge, England, where the group was formed by six choral scholars. In the United Kingdom, their popularity peaked in the 1970s and early 1980s. Thereafter they began to reach a wider international audience, appearing frequently on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the U.S. In 1987, they were prominently featured as guests on the Emmy Award winning ABC-TV special Julie Andrews: The Sound of Christmas.
Today the ensemble travels worldwide for its performances, appearing in around 125 concerts each year, mostly in Europe, the U.S. and the Far East, having recently added the People's Republic of China to their list of touring territories. In recent years the group have had several UK appearances at the Royal Albert Hall Proms and concerts as part of the Three Choirs Festival and the City of London Festival.
History
The group has always consisted of six singers in total, with their membership changing over the years. None of the original members remain. The first stable incarnation of the group, from late 1969 until 1978, comprised:
Hoyt Wayne Axton (March 25, 1938 – October 26, 1999) was an American folk music singer-songwriter, and a film and television actor. He became prominent in the early 1960s, establishing himself on the West Coast as a folk singer with an earthy style and powerful voice. As he matured, some of his songwriting efforts became well known throughout the world. Among them were "Joy to the World", "The Pusher", "No No Song", "Greenback Dollar", and "Never Been to Spain".
Life and career
Born in Duncan, Oklahoma, Axton spent his pre-teen years in Comanche, Oklahoma, with his brother, John. His mother, Mae Boren Axton, a songwriter, co-wrote the classic rock 'n' roll song "Heartbreak Hotel", which became the first major hit for Elvis Presley. Some of Hoyt's own songs were also later recorded by Elvis. Axton's father, John Thomas Axton, was a Naval officer stationed in Jacksonville, Florida; the family joined him there in 1949. Axton graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1956 and left town after Knauer's Hardware burned down on graduation night, a prank gone wrong. Axton attended Oklahoma State for a short length of time before following his father and enlisting in the Navy. Axton served aboard the USS Ranger before pursuing a music career.

This anthem - originally written by Harry Dixon Loes as a Christian children's song - became a musical symbol of the civil rights movement in the 1960s and 70s. It's a song that brought people together at that time of challenge and strife, united by its central message of confidence and peace. The arrangement was made by Stacey V. Gibbs for our 'Finding Harmony' album which we released in 2020.

Hoyt Axton Never Been To Spain Lyrics
Well I never been to Spain
But I kinda like the music
Say the ladies are insane there
And they sure know how to use it
They don't abuse it, never gonna lose it
I can't refuse it
Well I never been to England
But I kinda like the Beatles
Well, I headed for Las Vegas
Only made it out to Needles
Can you feel it, must be real it
Feels so good, oh, feels so good
Well I never been to Heaven
But I been to Oklahoma
Well they tell me I was born there
But I really don't remember
In Oklahoma, born in a coma
What does it matter, what does it matter

Hoyt Axton Evangelina Live Video 1977
Hoyt Axton Evangelina Lyrics
And I dream in the morning she brings me water
And I dream in the evening she brings me wine
Just a poor man's daughter from Puerta Pinasco Evangelina in old Mexico
There's a great hot desert south of Mexicali
If you don't have water boy you'd better not go
Tequila won't get you across that desert to Evangelina in old Mexico
And the fire I feel for the woman I love is drivin' me insane
Knowing she's waiting and I can't get there
God only knows that I wracked my brain to try and find the way
To reach that woman in old Mexico
( ac.guitar )
And I met a kind man he guarded the border
He said you don't need papers I'll let you go
I can tell that you love her by the look in your eyes now
She's the rose of the desert in old Mexico...

"Never Been to Spain" is a song written by Hoyt Axton, originally released on his 1971 LP Joy to the World and later that year performed by Three Dog Night, with Cory Wells on lead vocal. It was featured on their 1971 album, Harmony. The song was produced by Richard Podolor. In the US, "Never Been to Spain" peaked at #5 on the Billboard chart, and #18 on the U.S. adult contemporary chart in 1972. Outside of the US, "Never Been to Spain" reached #3 in Canadaand #34 in Australia.
The lyrics consist of the narrator ruminating on places that he has never visited, but feels that he has some proxy experience of via the music or other features of those places, or from having gone to similar locations. In the final verse, he observes that while he has "never been to heaven", he has "been to Oklahoma", where he has been told he was born, thus implying a kinship between the two places. However, the singularity of this kinship is called into question when he then implies that he could just as easily have been born in Arizona.

To reach that woman in old Mexico
( ac.guitar )
And I met a kind man he guarded the border
He said you don't need papers I'll let you go
I can tell that you love her by the look in your eyes now
She's the rose of the desert in old Mexico
And the fire I feel for the woman..
And I dream in the morning...
My Evangelina I miss you so I miss you so

Here is the second single from our EP, 'The Library, Vol. 4. It's an arrangement that's been in the library for a few decades now, and it's a total gem. The song is iconic, the harmony is delicious, and our instrumental collaborators are wonderful. The film comes from A Fly on the Wall productions.

Hoyt Axton Never Been to Spain live Perfomance
Hoyt Axton Never Been To Spain Lyrics
Well I never been to Spain
But I kinda like the music
Say the ladies are insane there
And they sure know how to use it
They don't abuse it, never gonna lose it
I can't refuse it
Well I never been to England
But I kinda like the Beatles
Well, I headed for Las Vegas
Only made it out to Needles
Can you feel it, must be real it
Feels so good, oh, feels so good
Well I never been to Heaven
But I been to Oklahoma
Well they tell me I was born there
But I really don't remember
In Oklahoma, born in a coma
What does it matter, what does it matter
Well I never been to Spain...
Well I never been to Heaven...

Why do I do, just as you say Why must I just, give you your way Why do I sigh, why don't I try to forget It must have been, That something lovers call fate Kept me saying: "I have to wait" I saw them all, Just couldn't fall 'til we met It had to be you, it had to be you I wandered around, and finally found The somebody who Could make me be true, And could make me be blue And even be glad, just to be sad Thinking of you Some others I've seen, Might never be mean Might never be cross, Or try to be boss But they wouldn't do For nobody else, gave me a thrill With all your faults, I Love you still It had to be you, wonderful you It had to be you
